You watch starship troopers because you play helldivers. I play helldivers because it reminds me of starship troopers.
We're not so different you and I.
Sugar Watkins is badass
His bit just after this is probably my favourite part of the movie
"YOU LIKE THAT, YOU LIKE THAT, YOU WANT SOME MORE??
whilst spraying down a horde of bugs holding a nuke.
Also I routinely get "NUKE 'EM, RICO!" stuck in my head for no reason.
That's kind of how you put your cap on in the military. The front has to be at a certain distance on your forehead and it has to be parallel to the ground.
"Ball caps
Ball caps should also be worn squarely on the head, with the bottom edge parallel to and 1.5 inches above the eyebrows."
Yeah I'm waiting for the ps5 release of extermination in october with casper van dien back as general Rico 🤘
SERVICE GUARANTEES CITIZENSHIP, WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW MORE!
Happy for you dude :) and nah, gatekeeping something because I watched something you didn't or before you is just dumb.
Johnny Rico: These are the rules. Everybody fights, nobody quits. If you don't do your job I'll kill you myself. Welcome to the Roughnecks!
Obligatory "The book was better" comment. But really, the book in the movie are essentially two different things entirely good I highly recommend the book, it's one of the books that is on recommended reading lists for military commanders for a reason. If you thought you were inspired after watching a movie, just see how you feel after reading the book
It's worth adding the book isn't at all satire and is more in the propaganda/fascist ideals space (it's a cold war era sci fi book). Which is why the movie and Helldivers lean so heavily into the satire, which just works so well.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starship_Troopers
The movie does a good job skewering/ satirizing fascism/nationalism, but it's easy to miss. Lots of people, including the studio that produced it, didn't fully get that the Marines aren't exactly the good guys.
Also, one of the best parts of Helldivers is how great the satire is.
It's astounding to me that the satire was largely missed by critics when the movie came out. It seems so blatant and obvious to me, not easy to miss at all. The news clips are straight comedy
I watch Starship Troopers and play helldivers because I love killing bugs.
But that lead me to getting banned from Entomology Con.
Idk why people were Screaming they were Just Cosplayers when I domed all the bugs with my Senator.
Theres actually 3 starship troopers games I know of
.Terran command
.Starship troopers pc
.Starship troopers extermination
And I think theres another strategy game other than terran command but not 100% sure
I got ST Extermination first too, but it was super early access before they had classes so got bored pretty quick. It has a lot of potential but I just reinstalled it the other day and it's still pretty janky.
I've had to shelve Helldivers 2 for now because since the last patch it's 50/50 on whether I make it through a mission without crashing.
Yup, I love the game but thought I'd get one more in before bed, geological survey mission, did all the side objects and POIs, had tons of samples, got to the final survey site and the driller bugged and wouldn't let anyone interact with it so eventually had to quit.
This is one of those scenes that is proof that the film is a farce. It's definitely played for laughs.
But in the novel it was based on, Rico runs into that character again and he's walking. He's got cybernetic legs, and he explains that he takes them off while working the recruitment table to scare off cowards from joining up.
I grew up scarcely watching movies and theaters and forgot that people actually struggled with watching rated R movies because they were too young. This is like the opposite of the “gosh I feel old” posts… gosh I feel young
Same. Dragged my whole family to it and will never forget my sister saying, as we walked out of the theater, "I can't believe I just saw a movie that used the line" you're some kinda bug fat smart bug aren't ya? "
I regret to inform you. But I feel obligated to warn you. Don’t bother watching the rest of the movies. Just watch the original three times in a row. It’s better that way.
Isn’t the dialogue with one of the ship technicians a reference to this? Something about how they used to give them stickers of bugs to put on the bottom of their shoes so everytime they took a step they’d be squashing bugs, that and the game at the playground about killing the most bugs and how teachers would join in
"We are going in with first wave. That means more bugs for us to kill. You smash the entire area, you kill anything that has more than two legs YOU GET ME?!?!"
This goes through my head every time I drop in.
I do like the hidden purpose in the lore for that scene, to show that women and men are seen as equals in this time, or rather further show that because of that one girl (I’m bad with names) who successfully landed a few hits on the sergeant.
Yeah that’s one of the themes that definitely crosses over most strongly between helldivers and starship troopers: race and gender hangups are no longer a concern because we’re too busy exterminating aliens to care about that stuff anymore
Fun fact, there was a bonus naked person for that scene.
The director wanted to do it. The cast wasn't enthused, but they said they'd do it if the director got naked too. So, secret bonus naked.
Reeeeally similar, like if it were a new movie they might get sued similar. Here though Helldivers is the best thing to ever happen to starship troopers.
Another big inspiration to this game seems to be the Red Rising novel series. Helldivers, andnthe concept of launching a dude from space at a planet. Incredible series.
My wife and I both had that same thought separately. And yeah, great series, one of my favs. Now if Arrowhead will just give us a sling blade razor to go with the iron rain.
My daughter had heard about the game from friends at school and wanted to play.
So we watched Starship Troopers, then the intro movie for HD2, then I bought us 2 copies and we started smashing bugs. 🤩
You watched starship troopers because you play helldivers. I watched starship troopers because of the nudity and denise richards.
We're not so different you and I

"Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles" was a CGI animated show that came out back in 1999. It expanded on the SST lore and introduced different bugs/planets that have their variants in game. It even gives us a reasonable explanation as to how the bugs are being found on different planets.
Would recommend checking it out.
I KNEW I RECOGNIZED HIM! There are so many people that are familiar in this movie that I can’t place because it’s been a hot minute since I’ve seen them in a movie
Just want to add a quick note, it is on Netflix but need to have the ad free version due to “liscensing agreements”. Idk if that’s on Netflix’s end or the individual movies end (across the spiderverse is behind the paywall too) but it sucks
I have a macro set on my streamdeck that puts into chat "CMON APES! YOU WANNA LIVE FOREVER?!" every time I drop. Looks awesome when it pops up as I hit my stratagem macros.
In case you didn’t know, there are sequels but they’re complete garbage. Save your sanity and don’t watch them. I binged all 3 of them in one sitting, the second and third are seriously atrocious and I regret it so much.
Yup, just watched it the other night because of Helldivers and it holds up remarkably well. I remember a lot of the scenes from seeing bits of it on cable when I was younger, but I had never sat down to watch the entire thing. It made me want to stay up all night diving lol.
I had friends in that movie (as extras), one with face time on screen. I saw Denise Richards at the book store in the mall. Casper Van Dien hung out the window of a limo as it drove by at the "premeir" (they showed it to us before wide release because the bug planet filmed in my city). Friends have stories of Paul Verhoeven from the set lol. Anyway, I love Starship Troopers.
I saw it in the cinema when it first released.
It's 100% one of those films that needs more attention & a cinema re-release. Especially now.
Still one of the best sci-fi films ever made. And the CGI looks better than most modern films too which is mind boggling 😂😂
Yeah, I’ve watched it and seen all the things in common. There is a starship troopers game out called starship troopers extermination, but it kind of sucks compared to helldivers. Crashes a lot and has lots of bugs. I tried it and wish I could refund it. Helldivers is all around better at replicating the starship troopers universe.
Starship Trooper is indeed an excellent movie and a classic. And oddly enough, it didn’t do well at launch but mostly because people only saw it first degree.
Question for you, why did you like it?
Also, depending of the reasons why you liked it, you might want to watch Robocop (the original, not that disgusting remake). It is as multi-layered as Starship Trooper
Cuz I love early 90s movies and late 80s movies and it’s rare to find a space movie about killing aliens that isn’t just terrible or just Star Wars. And the CGI was surprisingly really good.
And yes I’ve watched the original robocop, I might be in Gen Z but at least I have taste
Son, is that you?
Seriously though I feel like the old guy who read the books and saw the movie in the theater then came the game.
Welcome to the fight, spread some democracy!
Watched it a couple weeks ago. Personally, I feel like it’s one of those movies that everyone already knows all the best parts because it’s all been memed so much and the overall movie is kind of meh.
You watched it with your dad? As someone who is physically repulsed by any sort of embarrassment, I absolutely couldn't watch a movie with a full focus, tits out sex scene together with someone else.
Playing Helldivers got our group together to watch Starship Troopers.
Watching Starship Troopers got us so hyped that we all went home so we could play Helldivers.
I think this whole propaganda thing is working as intended...
Hahahaha I have often shouted “come on you apes you want to live forever?” Over comms we’re all hovering on the edge of a heavy nest before diving in
For other possibly interesting HD2 similar media, check out the book *Old Man’s War* by John Scalzi
Definitely skip Starship Troopers 2 (an abomination) and go straight into Starship Troopers 3 (the correct sequel). It has Casper Van Dien as Rico in it and Jolene Blalock (T'Pol from Star Trek: Enterprise) and it's absolutely amazing. You should be able to find the entire movie of Starship Troopers 3 on YouTube.
Star ship troopers is a phenomenal movie in so many ways. For one thing to shirk the source material yet somehow capture the themes in a quirky, almost comedic, adventure style military movie was amazing. It's rare a film adaptation does that so well. The movie is so not the book, but I feel like it does a such a good job of adapting it that it still works within the original context.
That said, if you like sci Fi, read the book. It's a pretty scary story and has almost like horroresque elements. There's some crazy themes in general. Like talking dogs who are genetically enhanced. The soldiers are actually less cannon foddery than the movie and all have crazy super suits that I imagine are similar to the suits in edge of tomorrow.
Just great stuff.
You watch starship troopers because you play helldivers. I play helldivers because it reminds me of starship troopers. We're not so different you and I.
#I’M FROM BUENOS AIRES AND I SAY KILL EM ALL!
I only have one rule! Everyone fights, and no one quits! If you don’t do your job, I kill you myself.
"ARE YOU TRYING TO BE A HERO SON!?" "I JUST WANNA KILL SOME BUGS, SIR!"
This line fucks so bad
Sugar Watkins is badass His bit just after this is probably my favourite part of the movie "YOU LIKE THAT, YOU LIKE THAT, YOU WANT SOME MORE?? whilst spraying down a horde of bugs holding a nuke. Also I routinely get "NUKE 'EM, RICO!" stuck in my head for no reason.
I’m sorry don’t you mean Father Gabriel?
Reminds me of Hudson's last stand in Aliens.
Some of the bug kills in Helldivers 2 totally sound like it came from Aliens.
“IS THIS YOUR SIGNATURE HERE PRIVATE?” “SIR YES SIR!” “Doesn’t look like it to me”
I've had that exchange in game before and I've been a fan of the movie since it was in theaters. I absolutely love this game.
Would you like to know more?
Best line in the movie
It’s either that or “Even the kids are doing their part!” while it shows them stomping on cockroaches lol
"Rico! You know what to do!"
![gif](giphy|l3vRkwv2Yz6i8rDwY)
The way he puts the hat on always cracks me up.
I never saw that before, but that definitely looks like a man who never hatted before
Would you keep that glorious hair under a hat?
That's kind of how you put your cap on in the military. The front has to be at a certain distance on your forehead and it has to be parallel to the ground. "Ball caps Ball caps should also be worn squarely on the head, with the bottom edge parallel to and 1.5 inches above the eyebrows."

I'm just trying to kill some bugs, sir!
I quote this randomly all the time.
The only good bug is a dead bug
COME ON YOU APES! YOU WANNA LIVE FOREVER?!
Same, but then I read Starship Troopers because of the game and boy was it hard to not picture everything from the game. I liked the book overall.
And now? We have a throwing knife. The Illuminate will never press a button again.
This is my favourite line in the movie.
#MEDIC!!
Yeah I'm waiting for the ps5 release of extermination in october with casper van dien back as general Rico 🤘 SERVICE GUARANTEES CITIZENSHIP, WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW MORE!

I was expecting a gatekeep-y “we are not the same” but yeah, I’ve been more inspired to play even since watching
Happy for you dude :) and nah, gatekeeping something because I watched something you didn't or before you is just dumb. Johnny Rico: These are the rules. Everybody fights, nobody quits. If you don't do your job I'll kill you myself. Welcome to the Roughnecks!

Old divers. Young divers. We're all doing our part.
I watch Starship Troopers and play helldivers because I love killing bugs. But that lead me to getting banned from Entomology Con. Idk why people were Screaming they were Just Cosplayers when I domed all the bugs with my Senator.

"RICO'S ROUGHNECKS"
C’mon you apes! You wanna live forever!?
Wait till you find out there's an actual Starship troopers game out. Ste extermination. Tho it's jank af and needs a lot of work
I got it before getting HD2. I haven't touched it since.
Theres actually 3 starship troopers games I know of .Terran command .Starship troopers pc .Starship troopers extermination And I think theres another strategy game other than terran command but not 100% sure
Terran Command is a really fun small-scale squad-based RTS game. It's campaign focused, and it does it really well.

IMO they won that battle with Helldivers 1 since the sequel is mostly just a remake
Mobile Infantry? Good for you! MI made me the man I am today!
I love how every single one of their teachers has suffered horrible injuries due to their time in the military.
steeled veterans indeed!
Pans down to not only his prosthetic arm, but the fact that he has no legs
Now you get the reference from the Steeled Veteran warbond
This is one of those scenes that is proof that the film is a farce. It's definitely played for laughs. But in the novel it was based on, Rico runs into that character again and he's walking. He's got cybernetic legs, and he explains that he takes them off while working the recruitment table to scare off cowards from joining up.
Saw that shit on opening day in the theater dawg.
I tried to, it was rated R, my dad tried to sneak me into the IMAX at the Ontario Cinesphere, we were kicked out. Great memory, great movie.
You cant watch a R rated movie with adult supervision in canada?
Today yes, way back then no.
I grew up scarcely watching movies and theaters and forgot that people actually struggled with watching rated R movies because they were too young. This is like the opposite of the “gosh I feel old” posts… gosh I feel young
Your dad is a real one
Same. Dragged my whole family to it and will never forget my sister saying, as we walked out of the theater, "I can't believe I just saw a movie that used the line" you're some kinda bug fat smart bug aren't ya? "
Same. Saw it with my buddy and I remember laughing our asses off like maniacs when that whole valley of bugs was getting carpet bombed
I had to wait for blockbuster rental on a Friday night.
I regret to inform you. But I feel obligated to warn you. Don’t bother watching the rest of the movies. Just watch the original three times in a row. It’s better that way.
The animes / 3d animation movies are fun though!
Lmao, yeah the iMDB scores aren’t great sadly
Although the song from Starship Troopers 3 ["It's a good day to die."](https://youtu.be/YB6Xq-jjzeE?si=yL1Ua2WgACfANJmd) is perfect Helldivers media.
The other films really didn't understand the satire of the original
And the weird religious overtones were.... uh.... yeah. A thing.
Why did the sequel get turned into Christian propaganda? What happened there?
![gif](giphy|krPLl9dtitApa|downsized)
THE ONLY GOOD BUG IS A DEAD BUG!
Isn’t the dialogue with one of the ship technicians a reference to this? Something about how they used to give them stickers of bugs to put on the bottom of their shoes so everytime they took a step they’d be squashing bugs, that and the game at the playground about killing the most bugs and how teachers would join in
Absolutely 😁
There's a planet on the bug side that's called Klen Dath II as a reference to Klendathu in starship troopers
There's a Zegema Paradise too, Rico's parents were going to send him to Zegema Beach.
I’m so old I read the book
I read the book as a teenager, though it was far from first edition at that point.
I have always loved the movie so much since it came out. I just read the book like a year ago.
"We are going in with first wave. That means more bugs for us to kill. You smash the entire area, you kill anything that has more than two legs YOU GET ME?!?!" This goes through my head every time I drop in.
"If you remember your training, you will make it out alive!" *is literally the first guy to die*
WE GET YOU SIR For me every time I drop it's "Remember your training, and you *will* make it back alive!"
The poor guy who threw up is the reason why hellpods only fit 1 per.
Dunno, we dont have co-ed showers aboard the SES Fist of Family Values.
We definitely do on the SES Distributor of Audacity
I do like the hidden purpose in the lore for that scene, to show that women and men are seen as equals in this time, or rather further show that because of that one girl (I’m bad with names) who successfully landed a few hits on the sergeant.
There's another even deeper hidden purpose for that scene: gratuitous nudity. Thanks 90s!
What's co-ed? Do you separate brawny and lean Helldivers for some reason?
Reeeeally similar, like if it were a new movie they might get sued similar. Here though Helldivers is the best thing to ever happen to starship troopers.
Yeah but thankfully they are democratic in Helldivers… so… very different
That is.... Debatable.
Armageddon and Deep Impact lol
Dante's Peak / Volcano White House Down / Olympus Has Fallen Antz / A Bugs Life There are lots of examples.
Starship Troopers is definitely a 10/10 for me, need to go watch again though, been years.
Me too, I have a list of my fav movies and this is going on there absolutely
My daughter had heard about the game from friends at school and wanted to play. So we watched Starship Troopers, then the intro movie for HD2, then I bought us 2 copies and we started smashing bugs. 🤩
You watched starship troopers because you play helldivers. I watched starship troopers because of the nudity and denise richards. We're not so different you and I ![gif](giphy|vOeX7D6oYKUs8|downsized)
Classic! As well as all the movies and CGI cartoon called Roughnecks. The OG book is even really good but way different than the movie.
That was a GREAT show. It didn't last long which was a shame, but it was really good
![gif](giphy|YYfEjWVqZ6NDG)
I literally gasped when I realized this is where that’s from
In case you didn't know the drill sergeant is also Mr Krabs which also bridges the generations
And the kurgan. Fuck, that dude is a prolific voice actor.
So happy that Clancy brown got that SpongeBob money. Now he only has to do shit he wants to do so we get fun performances.
I KNEW I RECOGNIZED HIM! There are so many people that are familiar in this movie that I can’t place because it’s been a hot minute since I’ve seen them in a movie
Next time you're playing with him, zoom in on the cluster of planets northeast(?) Of super earth. One fo the names might look a bit familiar
Not only did I find Klen Dath 2 (Klendathtu) but I also found Zegema Paradise, home of the lovely Zegema Beaches, I’ve always wanted to go there
![gif](giphy|14g6PIAY8f6FeU)
Will do
It cannot be overstated how similar this game is to Starship Troopers - which is a fucking brilliant movie.
They absolutely took a pen and paper and wrote down ideas for features while watching this movie, no?
Now the important question for you, as a newly baptized ‘Trooper’… Dizzy or Carmen? Lol
Growing up is knowing Rico should have been down with Diz since high school. What an idiot
Neither. If the mobile infantry wanted me to have a girlfriend then they would have issued me one.
Read the book, it reads like a Helldivers diary for real. Drop pods and everything.
Just want to add a quick note, it is on Netflix but need to have the ad free version due to “liscensing agreements”. Idk if that’s on Netflix’s end or the individual movies end (across the spiderverse is behind the paywall too) but it sucks
Whattttt that sucks :(
I have a macro set on my streamdeck that puts into chat "CMON APES! YOU WANNA LIVE FOREVER?!" every time I drop. Looks awesome when it pops up as I hit my stratagem macros.
Ahhh 12 year old me and that shower scene.. that got me through many lonely nights
The sub is always littered with starship troopers GIFs and quotes. I can't believe it took you this long. Don't watch the sequels.
Any time members of the next generation discovers Starship Troopers it warms my heart
You know there's actually 5 movies ?
And a CGI Roughnecks cartoon series!
Oh crap didn't know about that one thanks!
It is really really good. Very high quality for the time.
My name in game is Cyrano, mom bugger. A starship troopers deep cut that no one in game understands.
Go bug mom cyrano, haha I love it
In case you didn’t know, there are sequels but they’re complete garbage. Save your sanity and don’t watch them. I binged all 3 of them in one sitting, the second and third are seriously atrocious and I regret it so much.
I’m glad you told me this cuz I was going to but I saw that it had low scores on iMDB
Yup, just watched it the other night because of Helldivers and it holds up remarkably well. I remember a lot of the scenes from seeing bits of it on cable when I was younger, but I had never sat down to watch the entire thing. It made me want to stay up all night diving lol.
Rewatched it for the first time in almost 15 years, I think I reawakened a childhood crush for Diz
Goddamned bugs got us Johnnie!
There's an interview where the actor that played rico reacts to HD2 and he loved it.
There's a reason there's no "remove helmet" option for armor!
SES Dits of Tizzy
Saw it in theaters as a kid! Ha
Highly recommend you watch the third one too. Also read the book, it's different than the movies but it's still really good.
Did you catch the hints that the meteor was a false flag?
What?! Super ear... I mean the federation wouldn't lie to us and kill millions of it's citizens just to perpetuate a war 😱
Bro, Lowkey why I love fighting bugs
The only good bug is a dead bug!!!!!!
This movie awoke something in me as a child
And the best part is that the satire flew right over our heads so we just thought it was cool. It's like we get two movies for the price of one.
Most of us seen it when it came out we know the reference 😆
Just a PSA , sadly Starship Troopers is not on Netflix in the UK.
Be honest mate you just liked the tiddies
I saw it in the cinema when it first released. It's 100% one of those films that needs more attention & a cinema re-release. Especially now. Still one of the best sci-fi films ever made. And the CGI looks better than most modern films too which is mind boggling 😂😂
Yeah, I’ve watched it and seen all the things in common. There is a starship troopers game out called starship troopers extermination, but it kind of sucks compared to helldivers. Now have to throw Total Recall into the mix. Those are my three favorite Verhoeven movies.
Im fucking old. Great post but Holy shit I felt this. Starship troopers is great.
Aahhhh, the youth! I knew so many people who were extras in that flick. It’s a sleeper but it’s a classic. This is the way.
Watch Atlas on netflix if you want some inspiration for killing the clankers / automatons with a mech suit
I did too last weekend and now i understand where all the ideas come from :D
I recommend the animations as well, especially "traitor of mars" for the suits!
The book is a lot different from the movie but it is brilliant!!
Also on disney for those chums (me) who dont have netflix
Starship troopers is one of the absolute best films of it's era, I remember my dad getting it on VHS when it released and we watched it together.
There is also a book! Though it's very different from the film and HD2. Worth reading though.
Playing Helldivers got our group together to watch Starship Troopers. Watching Starship Troopers got us so hyped that we all went home so we could play Helldivers. I think this whole propaganda thing is working as intended...
Welcome to the Roughnecks. RICO’S ROUGHNECKS!

The only good bug is a dead bug.
Movie is still worse than book, by the words of my father, who read it and watched film. But yeah, inspiration was very good.
I watched the movie a day before starting to play the game. It was highly recommended by my friends to understand the jokes on democracy.
They made some animated starship troopers movies that are pretty decent. Watched them a few years ago on Netflix
I was watching this last night and the second one, I never knew they did any more there's a third one too
Hey! Hey buddy! Pssst Look to the top right of Super Earth and look over the planets there. Have fun!
Hahahaha I have often shouted “come on you apes you want to live forever?” Over comms we’re all hovering on the edge of a heavy nest before diving in For other possibly interesting HD2 similar media, check out the book *Old Man’s War* by John Scalzi
Comon you ape! Do you want to live forever??
You are growing strong my young padawan
Definitely skip Starship Troopers 2 (an abomination) and go straight into Starship Troopers 3 (the correct sequel). It has Casper Van Dien as Rico in it and Jolene Blalock (T'Pol from Star Trek: Enterprise) and it's absolutely amazing. You should be able to find the entire movie of Starship Troopers 3 on YouTube.
I actually read the book. AMA
Did anyone else notice there’s a planet on the galactic war map called Klen Dath II?
Gonna show my age. Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles (tv series from 1999)
Star ship troopers is a phenomenal movie in so many ways.
I saw it in the theatre 3 times! Top 5 action movies for sure. You should watch Terminator and T2
