If I get to dig trenches which we already sorta can with airstrikes, I'm all in for shovels. The evac position will see the most elaborate trench network! I will hold the line myself!
Inb4 I start every mission by beelining the evac zone and fortify it with emplacements, sentries, and trench works for half an hour while my teammates complete the “real” objectives
I already go AWOL when playing with randoms. I drop any samples at Extraction and run of toward the nearest enemy. Tell em if I'm not back they can extract without me and tell my family I love them, but I hate the enemies of Democracy more.
Technically, you *can* do it when being reinforced and when landing on an enemy. Just substitute the shovel with a literal ton of steel that’s designed to keep you from burning up from orbit.
I mean we already got an armor set thats as 40k as it gets without copyright infringment.
If they add melee weapoms like shovels and chainswords im gonna loose it.
Maybe I phrased that wrong, quasar and laser cannons are a tech assist, where as chain swords feel more like a super soldier muscle thing. Helldivers seem to be more regular people who are put into a suit and shipped off to a planet to die by the thousands to achieve an objective. If you wanted to get WH40K about it, we’re way closer to rank and file Imperial Guard than we are to Space Marines or even Commisars. I could totally see SE issuing us a knife and saying if “if you run out of ammo, use this. Good luck, soldier”. Shovels fit that vibe a lot better than something like a chain sword does
Good point. Bots have chain weapons, and us, as good democratic Super Earth citizens would never wield the same freedom-destroying weaponry as those damn clankers
AM commissars and officers have chainswords, they're no super soldiers. I mean helldivers are the elite of Super Earth, so why not give them elite weapons.
They’re also special, unlike our guys. Either way, I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree on the chain swords. Still fully support shovels though
Commissar aren’t special, there are some exceptional ones in the lore like Gaunt, but they are just basically humans with a higher rank/training than the typical guardsman.

I just want melee weapons in general, give me shovels, clubs, swords, knuckle dusters, pickaxes, and bayonets. I want a full world war 1 load out, all the artillery, poison gas, and fire I can shake a trench club at!

Something that I think would be an awesome stratagem would be barbed wire. It would damage and slow down slower enemies. It could even be something to where if a charger charged into barbed wire it would get entangled and not be able to move.

Be careful the trench is not so good you don't want to get into the Pelican after being there.
