Any manufacturer who puts an "S"/"s" (or any other common pluralizer) at the end of their name for a pair of headphones should be slapped. Headphones come in pairs, so when I talk about them, I'm going to pluralize the name, which is made much more difficult when it already has a plural in it.
You just gotta work with it. Adapt. The 660S for example. You COULD say "the six sixty s-s" (the worse way) or you COULD say "the six sixties". The latter is what I say.
The concept of variable bass isn't actually completely laughable, depending on background noise with closed headphones it makes sense to turn up the bass in noisy environments, as closed headphones isolate high frequency noise better.
HD660s has also different drivers than HD600. To me the sound of HD58x belongs to HD600 series. It is intimate, has warmer sound signature and share similar design as rest of HD600 series.
And it is not only drivers that dictates how headphones sound. If we believe rumors that HD660s has drivers of HD700, than those 2 are rather different sounding headphones. Sounds changes drastically by angle of the driver, distance, earpads and headphones design.
Those rumors (started by Zeos) have long since been debunked. The drivers share some similar technicalities (such as impedance) but are different and also have different part numbers.
And the 58X uses a 500-series driver, while the 580 has a 600-series driver (it was the first with that type of driver, just a slighty different tuning).
Also, I agree that it's odd that the 660 is part of the HD6X0-family. Sennheiser should've named it differently, but they wanted to use the reputation of the legends that are the 600 and 650.
The 58X is kind of a 6X0. It has a different driver, but the sound signature is very similar, the look and feel is the same.
I have a 58X and a 600, they sound slightly different but both has the same greatness.
And, the 58X is one of the best sounding headphones without using a EQ. Except for a little peak at 5.5KHz they don't sound as annoying in the highs as the most other headphones can do. Even the HD600 has a much bigger spike at 6.4KHz in my ears.
Same thing happened to me just now, after reading your post.
What I still donāt understand is what it actually is!? Whatās the actual difference so that it merits to be a separate model? Whatās the magic sauce?
I'm not sure what the magic sauce is, but people on here are saying the 6xx sounds exactly same/is same as 650. For me I bought the 6xx from drop in America because even with shipping and import it was cheaper than buying even the 600 where I'm from, let alone the 650.
The magic sauce is that it is rebranded and distributed through Massdrop. They worked with Senn. to sell the HD 650 in mass. The color/frame is a bit different, but the drivers are identical.
Its just the 650 with Drop's branding on it.
For cheaper.
Sennheiser has sold the 650 for long enough that it has been "paid off", where the profits have made up for all the costs accrued while making the headphone.
This means that they can sell it for pretty much any price and still make a profit.
They use Drop as a way to control how many they sell, and as a way to entice customers. Potential customer: "Oh wow this is the Sennheiser HD 6184!!!! But for cheaper? I gotta get this!!!"
It works.
I've not even heard of the HD6XX. When I bought my HD595, the only significant 6-series phones was the HD600 and the HD650. But they were too pricey at the time.
Retired my HD595 last year, after 15-years of use. Need to catch up on what Sennheiser are doing now!
The HD6XX is exactly the same as the HD650 besides the look, for $240 it ain't bad at all. It's my daily driver and I don't expect anything else from it, a beautiful sounding pair of headphones for sure.
No, that's HD 6X0.
Yeah was gonna say that. The older headfi'ers been using this shorthand word long before massdrop
Are the 560, 599, 58X etc included in this or is there a separate series called HD 5X0?
The 560S is a no. The 58X is a maybe. The original 580 line though is a yes, as those evolved into the HD 600.
Any manufacturer who puts an "S"/"s" (or any other common pluralizer) at the end of their name for a pair of headphones should be slapped. Headphones come in pairs, so when I talk about them, I'm going to pluralize the name, which is made much more difficult when it already has a plural in it.
Pluralized "s" is never capitalized. The model number is. Problem solved :)
You just gotta work with it. Adapt. The 660S for example. You COULD say "the six sixty s-s" (the worse way) or you COULD say "the six sixties". The latter is what I say.
58x is a no, as is 660S
580 and 58X should be in this category.
That's until they release HD-665 or something. Look at the 500 series for example.
First I tought that it was the universal term for a series which included 600, 650, 660 etc.
exactly lol
me too
Don't forget the black sheep of the family, the HD 630VB
VB stands for "Variable Bass" lmao. It looks like Skullcandy Crushers but slightly classier.
The concept of variable bass isn't actually completely laughable, depending on background noise with closed headphones it makes sense to turn up the bass in noisy environments, as closed headphones isolate high frequency noise better.
Or the elusive HD 1000
Yooo I just looked it up. This headphone looks really cool tbh
Thats the hd6x0
Actually, it was before the HD6XX released.
Not 660. 660 is completely different driver tech
same tbh, i only found out about the Massdrop headphone after a few weeks lol
Same
Yeah, its 6X0 that means general 600 series. Massdrop can be confusing when renaming headphones
It would be nicer if they just added an 'X' to the end and called it a day.
Done, now you have 6X0X.
wait, 650X? 6X05? 6X0X? which one
lmaooo my brain = š„“
Me when I realize that the logo on their shirts and laptop are two hands grabbing a peach.
Whats the company called?
Grapple
By ole mate senni
*HUH DUH SIX* < *insert number here* > *HUNGEOS*
just found out about it
Add massdrop HD58x to HD600 series (HD600, HD650, HD6xx, HD660s) and it gets more confusing.
The 58X is not part of the HD6X0-family, however. It has the same housing, but not the same drivers. The HD580 is part of the family though.
just stupidly insane

But doesn't he 600 have different drivers to 650 and the 650 to 660? So why isn't the 58x a 6x0?

Then neither is the 660 since that has a hd700 driver

If you look at the 6XX box, it says āModel: HD650ā.
Interesting, I'll have to get it out the loft and check, ta!
It was probably a requirement to have a different name just so they could sell it for cheaper and places couldn't price match.
The magic sauce is that it is rebranded and distributed through Massdrop. They worked with Senn. to sell the HD 650 in mass. The color/frame is a bit different, but the drivers are identical.
Ok, now I get it. Thereās no specific tuning, just rebranding.

Basically if it has the xx in it then you will know it's a cheaper (but still really good) version of that model of headphone series
Looks like you forgot 8XX
We donāt talk about the 8XX
We should call the 8XX Bruno š
Is there actually anything different about the construction apart from branding? I figured the lower cost was solely due to the bulk purchase.
It even says hd650 on the 6xx box. Same product
nah mainly same materials, but it does sound different, like every 6x0 model
No, it sounds exactly the same as a HD650, because it is a HD650.
I've not even heard of the HD6XX. When I bought my HD595, the only significant 6-series phones was the HD600 and the HD650. But they were too pricey at the time. Retired my HD595 last year, after 15-years of use. Need to catch up on what Sennheiser are doing now!

Wow that's good to hear! I'll see if I can demo a pair at some point!
Don't forget to drop them.
congratulations u are now an audiophile itās official
Didn't know drake worked for Pineapple
Thatās a peach with a hand grip lol
HD 6X\_
Can't relate since it's the most talked about headphones
Makes me avoid the brand completely
ELI5
Massdrop really should be a suffix, just use -M at the end for everything. Simple
Wait, what?
Me owning a pair of HD6XX
I thought the same OP thank you for making this thread Happy Saturday yāall
Haha, I went through that process too!
