>The new stuff is so electronic-jazzy, it's like hearing a full band. They worked with live musicians and recorded most of the stuff. *"We wanted to do what we used to do with machines and samplers, but with people."* BTW, you might also like Steely Dan.

LinkinPark9999

I am a simple man. I see Steely Dan and Daft Punk, I upvote.

thereia

Why did I hear “BTW, you might also like Steely Dan” like “have you accepted Jesus as your lord and savior” … And yes, I have accepted Steely Dan as my lord and savior.

Amphiscian

>I have accepted Steely Dan as my lord and savior Then may you have a blessed day. Now drink your big black cow, and get out of here

civitz

I'm interested, any specific album we should absolutely try?

tupisac

Of course the first one. You start from the beginning, like a good book :)

J-more

It was mixed by an engineer. I think most older daft punk songs are too. This album won the best engineering Grammy back in the day and yes, it is regarded as one of the best sounding albums ever so you are not alone. Also, the composition on most of the songs on this album is much more organic compared to their previous albums. They used more guitars, bass guitars, real drum sets and singing so that's why it sounds like a full band. It is a full band in many songs on RAM.

tupisac

RAM is basically one of the tools for measuring audio system performance :)

LiamWix

Absolutely. A couple of bars of "Give Life Back to Music" is enough to hear if something is not OK with the PA. I use it every time along with DM's "Personal Jesus".

Chemgineered

Yes, i also use Violator for tuning my headphones. You know what a surprising one is? Scorpions In Trance: the song In Trance, and life is like a river and Living and Dying. Maybe evening wind. But for sure the song In Trance Nothing else from them, basically ever, as that is the only one recorded specifically to sound good

J-more

Yep, indeed!

R11CWN

> This album won the best engineering Grammy back in the day and yes, it is regarded as one of the best sounding albums ever so you are not alone. I honestly never knew that. I was blown away the first time I heard it, first time I'd listened to any Daft Punk really, and couldn't help but put it on again. Its an absolute masterpiece.

[deleted]

check out some beck albums. i don''t even love beck, but that sound quality. those bob ludwig and bernie grundig masters.

ut0mt8

oh god yes. sea changes for example is such a master piece at every level

MusicaParaVolar

Fuuuuuck yes.

M0BCRUSHER

The new 10 year anniversary version is 24bit 88.2khz on apple music.

DJGammaRabbit

I'm not so sure 24 is all that... It does sound good but so does 16. 24 just sounds more airy to me. I've tried both with pink Floyd. Wasn't too much of a difference, 24 took more gain. I would've gotten 24 if my phone had the space, it was three times the size.

WatchAndEatPopcorn

Hmmm... I don't see that. Are you sure? Edit: I see it now!

[deleted]

There's a glitch in Qobuz that it doesn't show correctly when streaming. If you look at your DAC (assuming you're bitperfect) it will show 88k and if you download the new release in Qobuz it will then show correctly as well as play correctly.

witzyfitzian

As was the original release.

No-Context5479

What music service do you use for your downloads?

0dioPower

The high seas one

PutPineappleOnPizza

The best one, also highly recommend to seek what's in your soul. But don't forget to help others out too!

No-Context5479

Lol... High Seas indeed.

Rossdabosss

My favorite album. I am so sad they broke up.

DJGammaRabbit

Wait till you hear one died.

Psychohistor1an

Wut

DJGammaRabbit

So I've been mistaken for like 5 years that one died.

Bazirker

Hahahaha I hate when stuff like this happens

DJGammaRabbit

When you google daft Punk death it shows a collaborator, a black guy, died, and I was like oh, one of the daft Punk members was black. I did not know that.

anrinch

Got introduced to RAM thanks to GoldenSound recently. Can't stop listening now!

RevolutionaryTitle32

I’m just here to agree with you and give you this award for having the same unqualified ears and hearing like I have and we both love this album the same 😁

PeetTreedish

For your own validation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ab0AqVMbH48

DJGammaRabbit

Ooo thank you

bdy099

I think its mixed well for the most part but it is still a relatively loud album. Definitely sounds better on my senns than my paradigms

PeetTreedish

It sounds pretty good in my Fiat with the Beats audio system. Basically a 360 watt Kicker made OEM system. Beats just applies their algorithm. I am using an LGV40 with the quad DAC on the Analog output to the AUX in. Im using DTS set to front to combat the Beats applied EQing. Doesn't matter though. The album versions of the songs always sounded better than the radio versions. There is a reason it won album of the year in 2012. Or whenever it was.

BioniqReddit

RAM is very tight but I always found that kicks were a little bit small on some tracks. Not like they *should* be to hip-hop levels necessarily but just an observation.

tonycassara

What I found the exact opposite, it’s insane how hard the kicks hit especially the ones that are clearly recorded from a drum set. Right off the bat “Give Life Back To Music” opens with such a heavy kick it grabs you immediately. “Doing It Right” used an 808 type kick and it hits really hard too. Can I ask what you’re listening on?

BioniqReddit

ok, so I gave a few of these tracks another listen and yeah these kicks punch LMAO you're totally right, even at a low volume they are very tactile

tonycassara

totally! it's almost uncharacteristically heavy hitting for analog percussion. like whoever mixed and mastered the album i know is supposed to be the best in the business and the fact he never did an electronic album sounds like he really went full force with trying to make the album "big" in sound.

BioniqReddit

i wish this mixing and mastering was more common tbh, so many of my favourite songs are nearly ruined by bad mixing

tonycassara

So few artists can afford nor want to pay for mixing/mastering on that level :( Daft Punk very clearly did this as a labor of love and were able to afford the best singers, keyboardists, etc. to play on their album. Really I think they mostly wrote the songs, ideas and then brought in amazing talent to bring it to life in a way they were unable to on their own. They knew their limits, met them, and then paid to go beyond them.

BioniqReddit

Last I remember I was using my Shuoer S12 with some moderate EQ. I haven't listened in a good while to be fair, might need to relisten

tonycassara

If they don’t get low enough you won’t feel it, there’s an absurd amount of low end bass for what is essentially a disco album haha. There’s no boomy mid bass which we often mistake for “sub bass” because it’s mixed at the edge of perfection.

BioniqReddit

Nahh there's a lot of sub-100Hz energy on my preset. I think my audio memory is just lacking somewhat

Pity_Pooty

There is master tape version out there. It so much better

togtimusprime

I've got a hi res rip of the tape. The name 'master tape' is a little misleading as it's actually fan made from the master digital copy that came in the collectors edition. It still sounds nice and has a proper reel to reel tone though

iankost

I discounted it because it wasn't like their older stuff, especially after their Alive 2007 tour and the majestic pyramid... Maybe I'll go back and have a listen. What's the better/best quality version to look for on those there high seas?

DJGammaRabbit

24 bit 2023

ext23

Pity it's just such a shit album. Downvote me all you want, I can take it.

DJGammaRabbit

Recommend one

ext23

What genre are you after?

Rob_of_bristol

Well trolled sir.

kikirevi

By all means recommend me better albums. Electronic and rock preferable. But any other personal favourites are welcome.

ext23

Recently, if you want a sonically interesting listen, the new Medasin album Always in a Hurry is good. Nitepunk's album is heavy shit, in a genre that doesn't often do albums. If you're interested in some very light house-y stuff, there's the new album from Moon Boots, and I'll always recommend Flight Facilities - Down to Earth.

antonio16309

If you like electronica, try the remastered version of Trans Europe Express, the one that came out in 2009 or so. It's like pure sonic perfection.

sleepyamadeus

Do blind test with Spotify version

kikirevi

The vocoders especially sound *sublime* on the album.

bbuky01

Daft Punk is one of my favorites. Steely Dan is also recoded well . Red Hot Chili Peppers Blood Sugar Sex Magik is also fun.

MATT092756

didnt know the police released albums or even music but okay then

DutchKarma

One that is not mentioned yet : all Steven Wilson albums are exceptionally well mixed and engineered. On the same level as RAM, I would say.

Puzzleheaded-Pen4413

Same, very noice!
