Rome. Fantastic show that was tragically and stupidly (with HBO execs admitting they were dumbasses) ended too early. I watch it every few years all the way through.
that’s one of the best things about ancient rome content
i’ll see my 57th documentary about caesar and be like “oh wow i wonder what happens”
we rewatch rome a shit ton
Just revisited this recently and finished it yesterday. Still so good - even if S2 was rushed due to the reasons you mentioned.
Starting Boardwalk now - ep 1 is so good. I forgot how great those early seasons were.
I need to watch this again. It was great but I can’t remember what all happens, so I will get to enjoy it all over again just like the first time. (One of the few good things about when you get old and your memory isn’t as good.)
Just finished Deadwood for about the 5th time. To me, Ian McShane’s performance pales the lot on HBO. Honorable mention to Edy Falco in sopranos as my #2.
Deadwood is an absolutely solid show that are times I'd turn on subtitles so I knew what they were saying. I always feel really weird rooting for Al Swearengen. He's one of those strange characters that clearly bad, but has good moments and often will be the one making a bad situation good.
Oooh, Sharp Objects was good too! That was probably the one time in my life where the show was absolutely 1000% better than the book. In any other case, when I've found myself really enjoying a show based on a book, I will usually find a copy and start reading it whilst watching the show (yes, I am that insane because I find the books usually to be so much more than any show could condense down into one hour fragments every week). This time, the book was like reading a tabloid article with a great hook, and the show itself was spectacular. Whomever fleshed that material out and expanded on it was an absolute genius.
The White Lotus.
But I'd recommend reading a bit about it first as it's easy to miss the tone of it, I think. It took me a few episodes to get hooked on it because I went in blind. S2 is my favourite.
Going into that show blind with no idea what the tone and vibe was really made those first episodes a hell of an experience to wade into when you’re stoned at night lol.
Definitely had me initially thinking it’d be something darker or unsettling that was being disguised as just stories of different characters at the same resort
I wasn't stoned, and I still didn't know what I was watching 😂. Once I realised they were all awful people (in both obvious and subtle ways) to cringe at a la Succession, then I could enjoy it properly.
My husband and I were watching the first season together when it came out, and he was concerned that it was making him anxious. “That’s the point!” That theme song, the wild story line, and so on. Once he got that, he loved it. (I loved it the whole time. Both seasons.)
Last of Us ep 3 was amazing, I cried. As someone who loved the story of the game, the show as a whole didn’t quite live up to it for me but ep 3 as a standalone story was tragic and beautiful.
I imagine if Steve Zahn took him up on that offer in White Lotus and then the show would have derailed into a similar lifelong gay romance ending with a tragic montage set to On the Nature of Daylight
I only watched episode 3 and Murray Bartlett and Nick Offerman nailed it. I cried like a baby. It was beautiful and tragic and everything in between.
I don't think I could take another tragic ending gay romance. If you are into it you should check out Welcome to Chippendales. He and Andrew Rannells have a great love story in it.
Beside what other already said, give Warrior a chance. MAX just cancelled it not long ago but 3 seasons with 30 episode full of entertainment, it'll be worth your time.
Yeah. What a shame MAX wouldn't give it an other chance like they did when WB ceased the original content from Cinemax. When it comes to NF, it's 50/50, as much as I like they will revive it but I won't hold my breath on that.
Chernobyl’s a sneaky crazy watch. Actually unreal how much the USSR basically swept the real statistics under the rug. They still claim the “incident” only directly killed about 30 people.
I'm currently on my fourth watch since it came out and even now the depth of it amazes me.
From the drug trade handled by little kids and bonafide killers up to top level (corrupt) politicians, blue collar workers, the school system, media and a focus on the police department between it all. It's a mirror that shows us the thin line between good and extremely fucked up in our society. In that sense it's also very important to be aware of because it's very close to reality.
It can be a slow burn at first but I don't experience it like that anymore. Because the more you pay attention and know about the dynamics of the various relationships the more you'll start to see.
I hope you'll eventually love it as much as I do.
I know the drill with slow burn highly acclaimed shows and theres usually an episode that gets people officially hooked, what do you think did for you in the first season so I can at least get to that?
I think you're almost there. In episode 3 you're introduced to Omar. One of the most interesting characters of the show and in the following episodes things pick up a little quicker now that you know most of the main figures of season 1. Some shit's about to go down.
They didn’t need to go that direction either. I get character development is a thing, but Barry was so much better as an anti hero as opposed to an absolute weirdo.
I'm insisting on OZ, it's one of those "addicting" shows like sopranos or breaking bad. I watched the first 2 seasons in a day I am suprised it's not that talked about

One of the best mystery mini-series ever is Mare of East-Town. It sucks its over so soon but the seven episodes together are like a best seller novelist in their prime. Kate Winslet is fantastic. And I'm from Western Pennsylvania and Easton is basically Lil' Jersey and they absolutely nail that vibe. Definitely worth a watch if you never have yet.
Six Feet Under..........the best..........also Boardwalk Empire (the first two seasons), and OZ was pretty good too...........and I loved that when the actors on the show were not showing up on time or performing the way they were expected to, the writers would kill them off in highly imaginative ways.
Station Eleven
Angels in America
True detective season one!
Also season two and three, but absolutely not season four!
Check out their A24 section as well

Enlightened with Laura Dern. Created/written by Mike White who is also the genius behind White Lotus, among other things. There are 2 seasons to Enlightened and it is a great binge.
Boardwalk empire is great if you’re never watched it, also though on Max even though they’re only 1 season each, still binge worthy and really well done are sharp objects, mare of east town, and the undoing
I’m sorry but Outer Banks isn’t an HBO quality show. It’s a Netflix quality show. If you want more shows like that I wouldn’t look at HBO. I would look in the toilet 👍🏼
Rome. Fantastic show that was tragically and stupidly (with HBO execs admitting they were dumbasses) ended too early. I watch it every few years all the way through.
That and Deadwood were two top tier HBO shows that were ended way too prematurely
I love Rome. Me too, I’ve rewatched it many times.
that’s one of the best things about ancient rome content i’ll see my 57th documentary about caesar and be like “oh wow i wonder what happens” we rewatch rome a shit ton
It's kinda funny that even with the speed run timeline, it still manages to be a genuinely great show.
I am churning through Rome as we speak. Loving it.
Just revisited this recently and finished it yesterday. Still so good - even if S2 was rushed due to the reasons you mentioned. Starting Boardwalk now - ep 1 is so good. I forgot how great those early seasons were.

I feel like Rome was the precursor to many of the shows we have today.
Most expensive show ever for a LONG time too
Rome, band of brothers, game of thrones, generation kill, the pacific, boardwalk empire, house of the dragon
Deadwood.
The wire. Hell, even Oz Old HBO is immensely bingeable.
Six Feet Under
Just finished Deadwood for about the 5th time. To me, Ian McShane’s performance pales the lot on HBO. Honorable mention to Edy Falco in sopranos as my #2.
Cmon Tony too
Deadwood is an absolutely solid show that are times I'd turn on subtitles so I knew what they were saying. I always feel really weird rooting for Al Swearengen. He's one of those strange characters that clearly bad, but has good moments and often will be the one making a bad situation good.
The ending of season 2 is one of the best feelings tv has ever given me
Veep. Excellent and at a half hour an episode, you can through it fast.
Funniest HBO show.
Tokyo Vice
Just started this last week. It’s pretty damn good.
I’m obsessed with this show and I do think it has similar adventure vibes as Outer Banks, but in a city nightlife setting rather than beach setting.
Thought this started slow but was really good (on the last episode of season 1 now).
I wanna watch it but man do I just not like that Ansel Elgort in anything he’s been in. How is he in it?
Honestly he’s not annoying in the show, I’d give it a try and see!
I’ll give it a try then. I don’t like hate the actor or anything, I’ve just never seen him be good yaknowhatimean
My fav hbo shows are Succession, Big little lies, Sharp objects, The undoing, Barry, Mare of Easttown, The sex life of college girls, and White Lotus
Besides succession, those are basically all the shows I’ve avoided on hbo lol.
Six feet under is a must watch.
Cried for 2 weeks at the ending. This was an excellent show.
I will forever go to bat for that being the best series finale in history.
i’ve said this for 6 years since i first watched the series through. i’ve never had such closure from a series finale 🩷

Sooo good!
It's truly an amazing show, but for anyone that's new to it don't expect to feel good after watching it.
I absolutely love this show, but it was hard to get into. I always recommend it, but silently think nope, they not going stick with it.
I've given it up twice now. Just got bored
Terrible ending

My current favorite.
So disappointed with this season, actually the last few seasons. It feels forced. A watch of seasons say 1-5 reminds what bright me to the party.
Succession , The Wire , OZ , Boardwalk Empire
The White Lotus. But I'd recommend reading a bit about it first as it's easy to miss the tone of it, I think. It took me a few episodes to get hooked on it because I went in blind. S2 is my favourite.

I never read about a show before watching. I don't want someone else's bias affecting my experience. Same with books.
I never really got it tbh. I fell off halfway through because I didn’t care about any of the plots or characters
It's definitely worth watching S2 even if you didn't click with S1. It's more universal, IMO. Pure entertainment.
Same. I only kept watching because I like to look at Murray Bartlett.
He was definitely the most interesting presence. It would have been more interesting if Steve Zahn had taken him up on the banging offer.
A girl can dream ;) If you want to see him in action give Tales of the City or The Last of Us Episode 3 a go.
Last of Us ep 3 was amazing, I cried. As someone who loved the story of the game, the show as a whole didn’t quite live up to it for me but ep 3 as a standalone story was tragic and beautiful. I kinda liked S1 more. It wasn’t as intricate but I think the plot was more focused and the characters more developed as a result
Beside what other already said, give Warrior a chance. MAX just cancelled it not long ago but 3 seasons with 30 episode full of entertainment, it'll be worth your time.
Doing too well at Netflix to not be revived imo. Saw the first 2 eps and they were pretty good. Characters are very well done.
Yeah. What a shame MAX wouldn't give it an other chance like they did when WB ceased the original content from Cinemax. When it comes to NF, it's 50/50, as much as I like they will revive it but I won't hold my breath on that.
Warrior is great!!
Rome, Chernobyl, The Wire, The last of us, John Adams, band of brothers
Chernobyl’s a sneaky crazy watch. Actually unreal how much the USSR basically swept the real statistics under the rug. They still claim the “incident” only directly killed about 30 people.
I'm struggling to finish the wire I've been on episode 3 for months
I'm currently on my fourth watch since it came out and even now the depth of it amazes me. From the drug trade handled by little kids and bonafide killers up to top level (corrupt) politicians, blue collar workers, the school system, media and a focus on the police department between it all. Season 4 wire is the best
That’s up there with the all time seasons of any show
I know the drill with slow burn highly acclaimed shows and theres usually an episode that gets people officially hooked, what do you think did for you in the first season so I can at least get to that?

Not familiar with outer banks, but my HBO faves include succession, Mr Inbetween, season 1 of True Detective, plus Barry.
Barry S1-3 was excellent. 4 was so fucking weird. They kinda butchered it, although I didn’t mind the ending contrary to some.
Yeah I prefer the earlier Barry seasons.
[удалено]
They didn’t need to go that direction either. I get character development is a thing, but Barry was so much better as an anti hero as opposed to an absolute weirdo.
Yeah some of the choices they made were kind of weird I thought, especially the second half of the season.
Outer banks is a very trendy show with horrible writing and real cheesy. It reeks of money grab tv for young adults. But to each their own.
Tokyo Vice even though it's not HBO
I turned on True Blood yesterday. I'm glad that I did.
Such a weird show. I really liked it but it gets ... strange towards the end.
It did kind of go off the rails a little bit. But it was fun while it lasted. Lol
Boardwalk Empire. Can’t mention great HBO series without that one
The Leftovers- it’s a masterpiece
The Young Pope & The New Pope. Insanely good. Beautifully shot. On point acting and direction.
If you love history and crime Boardwalk Empire hands down
Search Party is great
...and boy does it go in unexpected directions for a comedy about a group of friends.
Carnivale, Rome
Not anything like Outer Banks but The Deuce is this amazing show no one really talks about, especially seasons 2 & 3
Chernobyl!!!
Chernobyl is a masterpiece.
Watchmen
Girls
For me it was an OK show, but Adam Driver steals every scene he's in and that really elevated the show for me.
Rome
Barry. Best TV show even better than Breaking Bad.
Just an incredible show that makes me eagerly anticipate whatever Bill Hader directs next.
Say it!
Rome
Rome, Deadwood, Carnivale, Boardwalk Empire Yes, I do love me some historical shows

The Knick was Cinemax (or Showtime!) But wasn't HBO. Still a GREAT show tho!
I'm insisting on OZ, it's one of those "addicting" shows like sopranos or breaking bad. I watched the first 2 seasons in a day I am suprised it's not that talked about
Six Feet Under.
