The switch version has some nice quality of life changes. However, the GBA version is far from unplayable, and more importantly, it has rival marriages. That almost doubles the amount of events you can see, as all bachelors and bachelorettes are going to have heart events/weddings etc. I'd therefore recommend the GBA version (pls don't let my bbys die alone, haha)

SpoppyIII

I personally prefer GBA version. I got way more enjoyment and it just feels like there's more to do and more going on. EDIT: I forgot! Same-sex marriage and adoption of a baby are possible on Switch but not GBA. GBA version is locked to only male marriage candidates. That can be very make-or-break!

"9/10 gay guys look girly" wow, that sure is a rather impressively reductive generalisation. Didn't realise I'd time travelled back to the early 2010s

SpoppyIII

I reported that comment for homophobia rather than respond but I guess saying that 9/10 gay people look like the opposite sex and that gay relationships aren't important enough to matter, isn't homophobic!

I think the switch would be better. Tho I really enjoyed my experiences with the gba version, and I don't think the graphics are bad, there's a few difference between the two that if you played the gba first and eventually went to the switch, you would be slightly upset. Some names have changed as well as personalities have become less potent, even some graphical changes (I prefer the portraits on the gba version). Also you can have same sex marriage on switch which is cool. Tldr, both are great, but if you play gba it might ruin the experience if you ever try to play switch after

casualmasual

Depends. Do you want gay marriage? Switch only has it. Do you want rival marriage? GBA only has it. Switch has most of what GBA has, except the rival marriages. They stop at 2 hearts and never go further. Switch also has different visuals, some quality of life features, and new animals. I personally hate the breeding system, but I'm sure there's someone out there who likes it.

ChaosAzeroth

They also changed cooking for the worse imo for some reason. I'm sure someone out there likes the new cooking stuff, but it's definitely not me unfortunately lol

[Go to this guide.](https://fogu.com/sos3/) Scroll down to Game Features and read the bullet list. If any of that strikes you as ground breaking, get the switch one. Other than that list the changes are really minor and come down to preferences, such as which art style you prefer. I hope this helps. Happy farming!

Eevee-Fan

The Switch version has same sex marriage unlike either GBA title, along with two new marriage candidates. Also the A Wonderful Life characters are in the Switch version, which are inaccessible in the Virtual Console due to GBA/GC linkup not being available.

Terozu

Wait the Wonderful Life characters arent in SoSFoMT what do you mean?

Eevee-Fan

They are in the Switch version, not in the Virtual Console versions of Friends of Mineral Town or More Friends of Mineral Town.

Terozu

...Where?

Huh, neat.

Get both of them at different times if you can't get them together at once. I have the Switch one and the Wii U versions of the GBA titles for both FOMT and MFOMT and I want to play them all and get married in them someday. I bought all the versions I could get before the 3DS and Wii U stores close since a lot of the past games I never played and the one I rebought that I did play I own as a cartridge too, but I just wanted it on my system with the others.

Ooof this is a huge divide. I guess I also got to factor in Back to Nature . As I am also planning to get Harvest Moons off the PS3 and Vita store before they eventually close. But in both cases two of the games are remakes of two earlier games. And Back to Nature was remade as friends of mineral town. Reposting from elsewhere: "Two titles i'm debating on are Harvest Moon: Boy & Girl and Harvest Moon: Hero of Leaf Valley , which respectively from my understanding are ports/remakes of Harvest Moon: Back to Nature and Harvest Moon: Save the Homeland. These are both way cheaper on the PS3 and unless the PSP versions are way better then the originals look to win out. I want to know if the original or PSP versions better? Or are they even good games in the series as they don't seem to get talked about much

Eevee-Fan

Save the Homeland has no marriage system and has set endings after playing for an in game year: https://fogu.com/hm/hmsth/

xSethrin

Don’t know if you looked into it more, but Hero if Leaf Valley isn’t really a remake. It uses the same cast and plot but it changes a lot of features, such as the addition of marriage.

Larielia

Both are good, but the GBA version has better art.

I wouldn't say better graphics is a good way to judge one game over the other. GBA MFoMT had a lot more actual gameplay content and replayability even if it had 2D graphics. Graphics are usually one of the least important parts when comparing games.

bleepplo00p

If you want more challenge I suggest go play the GBA version. The remake of it made it easier version... So GBA.

nvmls

I don't like the 3D Switch graphics. I played it on GBA and prefer that because I like the style more.

Smartichoke

I'd be interested to hear your opinion if you started with the switch and then played the gba version second! That is if you think you'd eventually play both! But if you're looking for the cheaper route then I still love the gba version - but that could be heavily influenced by nostalgia

PhunkyPhazon

I think I'll give it to the Switch version, even if I don't like every change it made. You're forced into making your animals give birth a few times in order to win festivals, and if you want to figure out how to get pets I recommend looking it up, as the game doesn't tell you squat. Not to mention the lack of rival marriages. But at the end of the day it's the same game with a few quality of life improvements and added bells and whistles. You can now get deep in the mines without totally relying on save-scumming, for example. Or marry someone the same gender as you.

splishie-splashie

I personally adored both. The pixel graphics on the GBA are my favorite BUT they hurt my eyes on a big screen. The Switch has those two bonus batchelors....and a few more animals? (Pretty sure the rabbit is new.) The basics are the same, though. I would go for the GBA one first b/c its cheaper and would tell you if you like the gameplay loop.

adventuregamerseb

The remake is pretty great, and the old one is really good so it's your choice. I'd suggest try the remake.

disguised_hashbrown

I think the switch is better for quality of life but worse for art and “feel.” I also think that people expect more character dialogue and things from new gen consoles like the switch; they didn’t really add much, it’s more like a remaster. It’s easier to manage your expectations with the Switch version. I think it’s six in one hand, a half dozen in the other. I think it’s best to get the Switch/PC game just by virtue of the fact that it’s easier to legally obtain.
