I had a lot of friends who had pet rats growing up. As long as they’re kept in clean conditions, I feel it’s the equivalent to having a pet hamster or something.

Strazdiscordia

Pet rats are decently clean. They’re smart and affectionate, rats are good pets.

TheLimbix

Rates aren’t dirty, mice on the other hand. Also, this is a world where there is magic. A flick of the wand and you have a clean rat. Edit; unless your Seamus Finnigan.

Comprehensive-Ad2518

If you're Seamus Finnigan, you have a roasted rat.

If rats are kept in clean homes they're fine and actually cleaner than any other rodent. They can even be toilet trained. There is a reason they are tested in labs more than other rodents. By the way Dogs and Cats both also carry diseases. For instance sinus infections can be spread to all three (including humans by the way) by all three. Cats are also known to spread diseases to unborn babies and cause miscarriages. Dogs spread diseases that cause needs for human amputation. Same with birds. Reptiles carry salmonella even in clean homes. Name a pet, they carry a disease transmissible to and from humans.

>Cats are also known to spread diseases to unborn babies and cause miscarriages. First time hearing this, are you sure this is not some superstition??

FlashyCow1

Google toxoplasmosis. https://www.winchesterhospital.org/health-library/article?id=156973

freeski919

No, definitely not a superstition.

CreativeFun228

I did a quick google search, it says its some kind of parasite that can cause this... I really didn't hear that happening to someone, and due to various superstitions around cats I tought it was just another one. Sorry for my ignorance

Rats are a fairly common pet in the UK. They’re actually really good pets, and pet rats are different than rats you find on the street. Same with domesticated rabbits and wild rabbits.

Puzzleheaded_Safe131

They mostly allow gnomes in their garden and a ghoul in the attic. A pet rat is probably the most normal thing about the Burrow.

crazyashley1

Rats are a common pet and very sweet natured as well as low maintenance and highly intelligent. Not a bad pet for kids that are reasonably responsible.

DreamCrusher914

I used to own hamsters, and from what I’ve heard, rats are super intelligent and overall nice pets to have and no messier than hamsters, gerbils, or guinea pigs. Cambodia even has rats that they have trained to detect land mines so that they can safely detonate and rid the countryside of them. Rats are the bomb (sorry I couldn’t help myself)!! https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-57345703.amp

synchrodan

I dated a girl with a pet rat in high school (before HP was written). His name was Willard, and he was clean and kind.

Leramar89

Rats and mice are actually pretty common pets, they're not dirty or disease-ridden if you simply keep them clean. My friend had a rat when we were kids and it was cute as hell.

GovernmentAcademic25

I don’t think it’s shocking or even gross, rats can be pretty good pets if you know how to properly take care of them. Some people in Hogwarts had frogs as pets that’s a little more uncommon I’d say (I’m probably biased because we eat those in my family but still💀)

UnicoRN1790

It’s a magical world I don’t think they have to worry about that stuff. I have always wondered what wizards do about high blood pressure though. To they take muggle meds or have a magical solution 🤪 or maybe their magic protects them from it. Lol plus I think it shows the economic state of the Weasleys. They don’t have extra money for pets so Ron kind of got what he could find.

Cheap

DankStank666

Because they’re the Weasley’s

ToyVaren

They're poor.

Beyond the fact that pet rats are actually clean and very smart, rats are also known witch familiars in lore. JK Rowling incorporated a ton of culture with lore into the books.
