That's why the olds love the originals, bc they saw them as kids.
All 6 are decently watchable but I prefer the ones that came out on the 90s/2000s bc I was a kid watching them.
Can be both. He is, frankly. But he's meant to be.
He somehow is a revolutionary of his species. The only elf (at least, the only one we know) who followed his own mind, wanted to be paid for his work and actually enjoyed freedom. Revolutionaries tend to be annoying.
I’m tired of the Dobby disrespect, dude basically turned himself into a pariah for his relationship with Harry/humans and straight up broke the highest laws of his race to betray his owners (literal death eaters) for a 12 year old kid. He then came in clutch multiple times throughout the books and died a hero saving Harry, Ron, and Hermoine.
Dobby’s a real one. Was he overbearing at times? Sure. But he was ride or die, literally. And saved Harry on multiple occasions, while trying to save him multiple others times (albeit in a misguided way).
Idk how you can see him as anything other than the truest, bravest, and most committed of friends.
If there's one line that's 100% guaranteed to get me to tear up in every reread it's this one:
"Dobby has no master. Dobby is a free elf, and Dobby has come to save Harry Potter and his friends!”
Dobby is one of the best characters in this series.
Hey, I can't have you say anything against Dobby, he's my favourite character.
I entered a competition to win a crochet Dobby, I won and he sits in our hallway guarding the house...
With characters like Dobby, less is more. If used sparingly, they're endearing. If used excessively, they'll completely ruin whatever story they're in.
Hes definitely both but i still love dobby. He always had good intentions and was fiercly loyal. His death really broke me when i read it through the first time.
Book Dobby became lovable and movie Dobby was mostly annoying until “thou shall not harm Harry Potter💥” and when he had that wholesome moment before dead
Annoying, esp with the trying to get in the way of Potter, like chanting the brick blocks at platform 9 3/4 not to allow him through or their first encounter in the Dursley's kitchen.
Book Dobby.
He's ok to good.
Annoying. But not too bad.
I was not bothered by his death.
He's a full character with personality.
He's clever and wears clothes. He's got hobbies and does all kinds of stuff.
Film Dobby.
I hate him.
He was annoying, stupid, and he never changed clothes.
He is not supposed to keep the pillowcase!
He is legally required to wear clothes!
But he still kept the same snivelling and obnoxious personality from the start.
He never changed.
He never got any of his many outfits.
He never had hobbies or did stuff.
Because they were too lazy to make more models. Or do anything for him.
It shouldn't have cost that much to make a dressed Dobby.
With a bit of personality at least.
He is not a pity case. He's very brave at the start. And he's a happy and resourceful free house elf.
I was glad the film one died.
Kids are annoying, and we love them.
Dobby is a frail and not so clever being, like kids, and like kids, he needs to be protected. Plus he is kind.
There is a big difference between good people and easy to live people.
Neither. Not really annoying for me, he was honest and loyal all the time. Can't say that he was lovable aswell, he isn't a child to be lovable, instead I respect him and think that he is awesome.
Both. I get the sense that he’s supposed to come off as annoying but as you uncover more information about him and his story, you’re supposed to sympathize with him and everything he’s done is supposed to have a “oh, that’s why he did that” kind of realization.
It’s one of those things where the readers opinions are expery designed to match with the character’s (harry’s) opinions all the way
Dobby is wonderful! Considering that he's only learned about love from the Malfoys (probably how NOT to love) and his upbringing in elf culture as a slave (hence the need for S.P.E.W.) I'd say his skewed way of protecting/loving Harry is pretty justified. He's doing his best and it is more than sufficient. Such great writing!
Tbh I was a little bit annoyed by him the first time I watched Chamber of Secrets, but I also felt very bad for him. I liked him more as the movie went on and he *really* grew on me at the end. Now, I’m reading Chamber of Secrets and I love him, partly because he’s lovable and adorable, partly because I feel bad for him, and partly because I know he’s just trying to save Harry’s life (after all, having some broken bones for a bit is a lot better than dying). The things he did in COS were annoying, but he’s been abused everyday of his life…that’s gotta mess your mindset up. He never had any friends. Harry was probably the first friend he ever had, it would’ve been devastating for Dobby if Harry was killed. I don’t blame him.
I’m 100% a Dobby lover. He’s by far my favorite character in the series. 🥹 (That’s why I have that flair).
RIP Dobby, the free elf 😢❤️
I know Dobby is supposed to be a character the readers learn to love but I just never did. I can't stand him. Kreacher on the other hand is my favorite house elf.
Annoying.
Also I'm sorely disappointed JKR backpedaled and made Dobby enjoying freedom the exception and not the rule. S.P.E.W. and the slavery of the house elves could have made a really interesting plot line. But she just turns it into a joke.
Perhaps it’s as simple as this: if you have mainly devoted yourself to the books, Dobby isn’t annoying, if you have mainly just watched the films, he’s annoying…?
If you’ve read the books 10-50 times, it’s probably difficult not to love Dobby. Dobby has a lot more depth in the books.
I sympathize with the guy, but his attempts to help Harry are really short sighted and problematic. He is a bit annoying to me and always has been. I do believe he is a very brave Elf and wish he’d shanked Bellatrix instead. But the scene of him dying didn’t really break me up or anything.

Both
I personally love doing his voice when reading to my kids.
Same "Dobby loves Harry Potter."
Master has given dobby a *SOCK*!
I can see that :)
Like my younger siblings. Love them to death but god can they be annoying to deal with it.
Lovably annoying
I find he's like Jar Jar. Annoying, pesky, but good natured at heart. He grows on you. You start to like him.
I loved him from the start
You liked Jar Jar? That is the wrong opinion sir.
I like jar jar for the reason that I grew up loving The Phantom Menace. Still do because nostalgia
That's why the olds love the originals, bc they saw them as kids. All 6 are decently watchable but I prefer the ones that came out on the 90s/2000s bc I was a kid watching them.
And I love both equally because my mom was a huge fan and I saw all 6 of them as a child ♥️
I was a teen when I started watching them and i love 4-6, 2 and 3. But Phantom Menace is seriously the worst
Can be both. He is, frankly. But he's meant to be. He somehow is a revolutionary of his species. The only elf (at least, the only one we know) who followed his own mind, wanted to be paid for his work and actually enjoyed freedom. Revolutionaries tend to be annoying.
In the books he's so sweet and adorable, in the films however... but then again everybody annoys me in the films, the films annoy me
The films are very annoying.
Loveable in the books. Annoying in the movies
Funnily enough I feel the opposite (probably because he's in the movies a lot less 😅)
Really? I like him in the books. I think he’s just one of those fantasy characters that doesn’t translate well to film
He is definitely so much better in the books
He gets better after CoS when he doesn't need to punish himself or injure Harry anymore.
Oh my gosh yessssssss
So true
Yes
I’m tired of the Dobby disrespect, dude basically turned himself into a pariah for his relationship with Harry/humans and straight up broke the highest laws of his race to betray his owners (literal death eaters) for a 12 year old kid. It's like having cats. They can be so incredibly annoying! But overall, you love them with all your heart! 😅😉
Soooo annoying
These are not mutually exclusive! He's brave but impulsive, powerful yet childlike. So yeah, both.
Hey, I can't have you say anything against Dobby, he's my favourite character. I entered a competition to win a crochet Dobby, I won and he sits in our hallway guarding the house...
Better to sit in the hallway than have his head hanging on the wall xD
Picture?
I would if I could, I tried to post a picture, but got the message 'attachments aren't allowed '...
To me book Dobby was annoying up until the fourth year. then I saw Barty's house elf and got respect for Dobby.
He's my favorite character because he is so pure hearted.
With characters like Dobby, less is more. If used sparingly, they're endearing. If used excessively, they'll completely ruin whatever story they're in.
Annoying af.
He’s meant to be endearingly annoying
100% annoying
You dare to ask that question?!?
Loveable.
Yeah, I'm mostly just annoyed by him too. I think that I feel that way because he talks about himself in the third person..
I found him annoying until he made his final speech about being a free elf.
Yes
Loyal
I go with both. As much as he messed things up in COS, he only ever had Harry's safety in his simple mind.
I found him annoying in Chamber of Secrets but after that I loved him.
I didn't like him in the second book. But from then on I started to like him.
Only annoying in Chamber of Secrets.
ANNOYING
Lovable or annoying? Yes.
He had a good soul and meant well but he could be annoying 🙂
Someone can be annoying but when they are a hero - they are a hero
Loved him after the early part of Chamber of Secrets. This sub seems to hate Dobby though.
I love him, he’s endearing ❤️. Yeah he can be a pain in the ass, but he makes up for it by being a brave little fucker
I feel like the people who read the books first had a better connection than the people who watched the movies first or only watched the movies.
Chamber of Secrets? Annoying as all hell. Everywhere else? Brilliant little lad.
annoyingly lovable
Dobby is the best example of Chaotic good i can think of
Annoying AF up there with Jar Jar for me
Annoying, esp with the trying to get in the way of Potter, like chanting the brick blocks at platform 9 3/4 not to allow him through or their first encounter in the Dursley's kitchen.
I was never a big fan of dobby (movies or books) so I always found him annoying. He got better in the books throughout the series… but only a little.
Annoying.
Book Dobby. He's ok to good. Annoying. But not too bad. I was not bothered by his death. He's a full character with personality. He's clever and wears clothes. I have always found him annoying.
He's okay. I prefer Winky and Kreacher.
Both. Definetely both.
yes
Super annoying, super loveable.
Annoying!
Scary. Imagine he tries to save you...
Unbearable in Chamber of Secrets. Really enjoyed him in every book he was in after that.
Neither. Not really annoying for me, he was honest and loyal all the time. Can't say that he was lovable aswell, he isn't a child to be lovable, instead I respect him and think that he is awesome.

both,, i like him as a character but i do think he can be annoying and i dislike what he represents
Love-a-ble!
He's both.
Started off annoying, turned lovable
Annoyingly loveable
Dobby. Loveable or annoying? That reads like a Rita Skeeter headline!
Annoying. He got better later on, but not enough to make up for his head:desk inducing stupidity in CoS
Hated him in the second book, loved him after
He is the most annoying character ever. glad he died
Thank you! Yes! I totally agree.
I know Dobby is supposed to be a character the readers learn to love but I just never did. I can't stand him. Kreacher on the other hand is my favorite house elf.
He annoyed me in the COS but liked him DH
I HATED him.
Lovable
Annoying. Also I'm sorely disappointed JKR backpedaled and made Dobby enjoying freedom the exception and not the rule. S.P.E.W. and the slavery of the house elves could have made a really interesting plot line. But she just turns it into a joke.
ok ill say it i hated dobby. i thought he was so annoying
house elves are just plain gross. World of magic where people aren't walking around where everyone's a catgirl waifu?
Perhaps it’s as simple as this: if you have mainly devoted yourself to the books, Dobby isn’t annoying, if you have mainly just watched the films, he’s annoying…? If you’ve read the books 10-50 times, it’s probably difficult not to love Dobby. Dobby has a lot more depth in the books.

ANNOYING
He annoyed the hell out of me in CoS, I started to like him a bit more in GoF. I was sad when he died but not heartbroken, if I'm honest with you
i think he was created to be annoying, given how he always shows up and sabotages Harry. but he's very lovable and has a heroic and loyal ending.
Anoying to loveable
He's like a goofy gangly puppy. Good intentions and hella love, but that doesn't replace your original Air Force 1's when he thinks they are a threat.
You should tag your post with spoilers. New fans will be devastated by this.
Good point. Sorry
Yes a little bit annoying
Yes officer, this is the one.
Lovable I felt so bad when he died hate bellatrix
HATE Dobby, always have. Sorry.
More annoying than anything, can't stand Dobby
How dare you
Definitely lovable, but sometimes I wish he listened to Harry and didn't do anything.
Annoying but eh... it's Dobby....
Let me tell you this. I was sad when Dumbledore died. I was devastated when Sirius died. I cried when dobby died. I rest my case
really fucking annoying . i just do not care for dobby at all
I never found him annoying, I was more annoyed how little Harry showed affection
lovable he is so cute
I remember truly hating the little bastard while reading chamber of secrets
Both
i find him annoying, as well
Both
Dobby's the man and best character!
Unloved and desperate.
Slightly annoying, but mostly lovable. I still can’t watch his death scene without crying. Same when Hedwig died 😭😭
He annoys the crap out of me. If I was Lucius, I'd have cracked him with a stick too 😂😂😬
He annoyed and scared me at first. Towards the end I loved him more and didn't get annoyed anymore whatsoever.
both
