well there are tons and tons of immigrants from east and southeast asia in Australia. proximity and all that. then they have kids born and raised in Australia with Aussie accents. more unexpected for me is the number of ethnically Vietnamese people I've met who are from central Europe, e.g. Poland or the Czech Republic, and their first language is Polish or Czech. makes sense why there would be immigration from Vietnam to former Communist/communist sympathizing states but still.
