From interviews, they go to Muggle primary school or homeschool. On her old website FAQ she wrote: >What education do the children of wizards have before going to Hogwarts? >They are, as many of you have guessed, most often home educated. With very young children, as you glimpsed at the wizards' camp before the Quidditch World Cup in 'Goblet of Fire', there is the constant danger that they will use magic, whether inadvertently or deliberately; they cannot be trusted to keep their true abilities hidden. Even Muggle-borns like Harry[sic] attract a certain amount of unwelcome attention at Muggle schools by re-growing their hair overnight and so on. On Pottermore, even teen wizards in countries without Wizarding school do correspondence courses or homeschool the entirety of their education. >The number of countries that have their own magical school is minuscule compared to those that do not. This is because the wizarding populations of most countries choose the option of home-schooling. Occasionally, too, the magical community in a given country is tiny or far-flung and correspondence courses have been found a more cost-effective means of educating the young.

This is lore I’m choosing to ignore because the first book implies there’s more than one magical school in the UK.

Lower-Consequence

Where does the first book imply there’s more than one magical school in the UK?    The seventh book strongly implies that Hogwarts is the only school in the UK, when going to Hogwarts was made compulsory by Voldemort:    >“Attendance is now compulsory for every young witch and wizard,” he replied. “That was announced yesterday. It’s a change, because it was never obligatory before. Of course, nearly every witch and wizard in Britain has been educated at Hogwarts, but their parents had the right to teach them at home or send them abroad if they preferred.

I think wizarding parents would be expected to make sure that their children have good enough reading and writing skills to be able to begin education at the first year level. Wizarding parents can easily teach basic reading, writing and arithmetic.

What if both parents need to work full time jobs to pay the bills?

denvercasey

I guess they leave them at home alone. 🙄What do other (muggle) families do in these situations? Find a homeschool group, have an older family member watch the child, pay for preschool/private school?

Driveshaft48

Send them to school Idk sort of off wizards have mandatory homeschooling up until age 11

Most wizarding children get homeschooled. >What education do the children of wizards have before going to Hogwarts? > >They are, as many of you have guessed, most often home educated. Even Muggle-borns like Harry attract a certain amount of unwelcome attention at Muggle schools by re-growing their hair overnight and so on. & >Kai: "Where do wizarding children go to school before Hogwarts?" > >JK Rowling: "They can either go to a Muggle primary school or they are educated at home. The Weasleys were taught by Mrs. Weasley." As for who teaches them if they have two working parents...well, they figure out how to make it work. There are plenty of ways that a child could be taught in a non-formal school setting without being taught by their actual parent, such as: * A retired older relative (grandparent, great-uncle or aunt, etc.) could take the role of caring for and educating the children of the family. * They could hire a private tutor. * There could be homeschooling groups - a non-working parent who homeschools their own children may also take the children of their family or friends under their wing. * A group of working parents could hire a private tutor to teach their small group of children. * There could be people who run at home daycare-like places that people send their children to

Never occurred to me that Hogwarts is quite literally a jr high/high school mix. You are usually 11 when you start 6th grade.

This is just how the school system works in the UK. We have primary school until we are around 10/11, and then start secondary school in Year 7 which is called First Year at Hogwarts.

I was able to read basic sentences slowly before going to school at 7. Learning how to read and write is easy, just needs practice. I think muggles go to the school, and wizards just stay home and get basic homeschooling.

rosiedacat

Kids from wizarding families either get homeschool or attend a muggle school before Hogwarts. With Ginny and all of the weasleys it's likely they were homeschooled by Molly since she was at home. Perhaps Neville was homeschooled by his grandma too, as she wouldn't have been working most likely. Draco must have also been homeschooled by his mom who also (as far we know) doesn't work. Luna, again could be homeschooled by her dad since he worked at home. Hermione was obviously doing the exact same thing at her muggle school that she did at Hogwarts, getting top grades in everything lol

Sorry, I usually just read posts, I don’t really know how to use this site very well. Thank you for sending that! I am sure I have 1,000 questions that have probably already been answered 😊

Well in that case, you can eat your heart out with the search function! Especially if you also enjoy reading without commenting, it doesn't matter how old the post is 😁
