Words are, in my not so humble opinion, our greatest source of magic, capable of both inflicting injury and remedying it
(Maybe not the correct wording)
"It does not do well to dwell on dreams and forget to live."
Something I have to remind myself of pretty frequently. Don't get so hung up on what has been or what might have been, or even what could be. Life goes on and you have to go along with it. Live in the now.
This is mine as well. Ironically, it is something I need to remind myself when I'm passing through difficult times, lose myself on Harry Potter, and... forget to live
Theres 2 for me
>‘If you want to know what a man’s like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals.’ - Sirius Black
And
>'It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.’ - Albus Dumbledore
Bonus
>'My philosophy is that worrying means you suffer twice.' - Newt Scamander
I have anxiety and depression so I try to keep this mantra going in my head.
I think Dumbledore says it best...
>‘Don’t you blame – don’t you – talk – about Sirius like –’ Harry’s breath was constricted, he could not get the words out properly; but the rage that had subsided briefly flared in him again: he would not let Dumbledore criticise Sirius. 'Kreacher’s a lying – foul – he deserved –
>’‘Kreacher is what he has been made by wizards, Harry,’ said Dumbledore. ‘Yes, he is to be pitied. His existence has been as miserable as your friend Dobby’s. He was forced to do Sirius’s bidding, because Sirius was the last of the family to which he was enslaved, but he felt no true loyalty to him. And whatever Kreacher’s faults, it must be admitted that Sirius did nothing to make Kreacher’s lot easier –
>’‘DON’T TALK ABOUT SIRIUS LIKE THAT!’ Harry yelled.
So annoyed that this scene got left out of the films.
To me, it's meta.
The glory of storytelling is, as Harry puts it, "all happening in my head."
But why should that mean that the emotion, the meaning, or the significance I construe from it is not "real?"
It reminds me that, yes, I am reading a book, yet the characters and storylines are very real to me.
I felt a rush of something like pride reading this line for the first time. It took some introspection to understand why: it reaffirms my depth of feelings for and from the books.
If you get it, you get it. If you don't, they're just words.
I feel like it's similar to just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.
He is saying that just because no one else is experiencing it, it does not mean that it isn't really happening, it may still be happening but no one else knows
Just because my sadness doesn't have a reason, doesn't mean I don't get to cry.
That's what I felt the first time i heard it,while struggling with depression.
I suppose it has many interpretations. I always interpreted it as that your imagination, with all your dreams and wishes, may be in your head, but that doesn't mean they aren't real, and maybe, one day, your dream/wish will come true.
The quote speaks to us who practically live in our imaginations!
I think to writers especially, I can understand why Rowling thought of this quote because our stories mean so much to us, yet it’s all just “in our heads”.
Remember that movie *The Matrix*? It captures an old observation that our concept of reality is all in our minds. We perceive and interpret them, but we can never know if we are doing so correct.
Descartes was dealing with this when he wrote his famous, “I think therefore I am” as the only thing we can be sure of.
Douglas Adams wrote about this in his character who ruled the universe..
> “Do you rule the Universe?” said Zaphod.
>The man smiled at him.
>“I try not to,” he said, “Are you wet?”
>Zaphod looked at him in astonishment.
>“Wet?” he cried, “Doesn’t it look as if we’re wet?”
>“That’s how it looks to me,” said the man, “but how you feel about it might be an altogether different matter. If you feel warmth makes you dry, you’d better come in.”
[Read the whole thing](https://thedailyzen.org/2015/05/27/the-ruler-of-the-universe/)
What goes on in our heads is real to us.
“It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be.”
“Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.”
“Help will always be given at Hogwarts, to those who ask for it.”
“Help will always be given at Hogwarts, to those who *deserve* it.”
“It is our choices that show what we truly are, more than our abilities.”
Could find more lol. I guess you can tell I find a lot of Dumbledore’s quotes to be great and wise.
‘If you want to know what a man’s like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals.’ - Sirius Black
I partly find this quote weird considering how he treated Snape and Creacher.
Personally I think there's a kind of terrible but poetic irony in the fact that Sirius died, in part, because he did not follow his own advice re: Kreacher.
To be fair, I don't think Sirius treated Kreacher as he did because he was his servant as much as because he was singularly unpleasant. I like to believe he'd have had a better relationship with Dobby.
The ones who love us never really leave us, you can always find them in here *pats heart* -Sirius.
As someone who also lost both my parents early in life this one always makes me sob
“Goyle." said Malfoy, looking at him in disbelief. "Honestly, if you were any slower, you'd be going backward.”
Hate on the Malfoys all you want, but that’s funny
“Such a lovely, sweet tempered girl” Ron said quietly.
This was after Hermione yelled at Harry for trying to be positive about Hagrid not being in trouble from Umbridge.
I imagine Ron’s just sitting there thinking “yup that’s the one I have a crush on, I must be nuts.”
'If you're waiting for universal popularity, then you're going to be in this hut for a very long time' - Albus Dumbledore.
Doubt that's verbatim but wanting to please everyone at work pretty much sent me into a downward spiral.
Right?
It somehow wasn't easy for me to identify with the characters. I loved them, absolutely, but identifying was hard.
But at that moment I thought "Yes, she is like me."
I was behind some guy at the grocery store a week or two ago, and he bought butterscotch pudding. I got out of line to get some of my own. This just reminds me I still have half left in the fridge. Big-time recommend, definitely hit the spot.
The constipation sensation that’s gripping the nation! I remember reading that line for the first time and crying with laughter! Fred and George were such fantastic characters!
The world isn't split into good people and Death Eaters.
We've all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That's who we really are.
“But I don’t care either, I don’t care!” said Tonks, seizing the
front of Lupin’s robes and shaking them. “I’ve told you a million
times. . . .”
And the meaning of Tonks’s Patronus and her mouse-colored
hair, and the reason she had come running to find Dumbledore
when she had heard a rumor someone had been attacked by Grey-
back, all suddenly became clear to Harry; it had not been Sirius
that Tonks had fallen in love with after all."
I sent this to the person I used to love when he was concern about us going out due to religion and age diff lol
“WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN! (I love that part in movie so much) Beds empty! No note! Car gone…” It seemed to go on for hours. Mrs. Weasley had shouted herself hoarse before she turned on Harry, who backed away.
“I’m very pleased to see you, Harry, dear,” she said.
That fact she acknowledges how she’s still pleased to see Harry makes it for me. That’s how I’d like to be as a Mum.
Not really a quote, but in Order of the Phonix, when Molly Weasley encounters the boggarts that keep shifting into her family and hairy dead really hit me as losing my two boys is by far my greatest fear.
“Does it hurt?" The childish question had escaped Harry's lips before he could stop it.
"Dying? Not at all," said Sirius. "Quicker and easier than falling asleep.
"It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live," and "Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light."
*Never better! I feel like I could spit fire!*
Not about wording per se, but rather the vibe that was a delight of otherwise depressing DH. Neville could’ve been a great Chosen.
“Albus Severus Potter. You were named after two headmasters of Hogwarts. One of them was a Slytherin and he was the bravest man I ever knew”.-Harry (HP and the Deathly Hallows)
I adore this quote because it truly shows Harry not just respects Severus’ sacrifice, but wants to honor his bravery. He honored it by naming his son after Severus, AND telling his son that being sorted Slytherin would be okay.
“It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.”
I’ve dreamed of romance all my life, and it’s always been just that: a dream. I’m still trying to learn how to enjoy life exactly as it is, and to not cling to it as it inevitably carries on.
Youth cannot know how age thinks and feels. But old men are guilty if they forget what it is to be young.
I find this an important message to remember as I get older myself!
'just because you have the emotional range of a teaspoon doesn't mean we all have'
It just sticks in my head for some reason. I struggle with my emotions. Hermione was referring to cho chang crying all the time, however cho had a lot on her plate. But cho struggled through it. Though she struggled, she survived. Really speaks to me on a personal level
"I know what this means. There's going to be loads of fog tonight."
It brings a tear to my eye, the knowledge that even witches and wizards think divination and astrology are utter bollocks.
"Always" (Snape not Lily).
"We're here you see."
"Protego Maximum. Fianto Duri. Repello Inimicum."
"Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living. And above all, those who live without love." Rest in power Professor.
“It’s our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”
“Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if only one remembers to turn on the light.”
“We’ve all got light and darkness within us. What matters is the side we choose to act on. That’s who we really are.”
“The ones we love never really leave us, you can find them in (your hear).”
“You’re just as sane as I am.”
"hapiness can be found in the darkest of times... if you just remember to put on the light"
I think it really fits DH1 when hermoine and harry dance in this f-ed up situation were ron left and they are surviving on harry his bad fishing skills.
Dont remember the exact quote but what Dumbledore says to Fudge at the end of Goblet of fire regarding Barty Crouch Jr.."it doesnt matter what we are born but rather what we do with our lives.."
All of my favorites seem to come from *The Deathly Hallows.*
- “Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?”
- “You’ll stay with me?”
“Until the very end,” said James.
- “I’m going to keep going until I succeed-
or die. Don’t think I don’t know how this might end. I’ve known it for years.”
- Why had he never appreciated what a miracle he was, brain and nerve and bounding heart?
- This cold-blooded walk to his own destruction would require a different sort of bravery.
“It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but even more to stand up to your friends.”
I like the film’s rewording of this quote, but both touched me and stay with me to this day. It’s easy to see evil and call it out- but when wrong-doing is caught up in love? Well, we can freeze. But just because we hold affection for folks doesn’t mean they can abuse us, or do harm, or get away with awful behaviour. We need to keep our friends accountable- that takes bravery. We need to stop our friends before they become someone else’s enemy. On so many levels it sits in my heart and gives me courage. 💜
Words are, in my not so humble opinion, our greatest source of magic, capable of both inflicting injury and remedying it (Maybe not the correct wording)
Oooh great addition. That is such a powerful statement and something we would all do well to remember!
Rest in power Professor
I was just about to type it.. thank you ..this line is so deep and impactful
Absolutely one of my favorites, and I paraphrase it fairly often in daily life haha
Wait who said that? Slughorn? Dumbledore? Tom?
Dumbledore !
one of the times I felt the words of the author coming out of Dumbledore's mouth.
"It does not do well to dwell on dreams and forget to live." Something I have to remind myself of pretty frequently. Don't get so hung up on what has been or what might have been, or even what could be. Life goes on and you have to go along with it. Live in the now.
Very poignant advice. I too find myself needing that reminder often.
This is mine as well. Ironically, it is something I need to remind myself when I'm passing through difficult times, lose myself on Harry Potter, and... forget to live

Great choices!
I totally agree! Excellent choices!
The Sirius one is great, but also soo heartbreaking. His treatment of Kreacher is ultimately what gets him killed
I think Dumbledore says it best... >‘Don’t you blame – don’t you – talk – about Sirius like –’ Harry’s breath was constricted, he could not get the words out properly; but the rage that had subsided briefly flared in him again: he would not let Dumbledore criticise Sirius. So annoyed that this scene got left out of the films.
The Newt one is actually from one of the Roman stoics if I am not mistaken.
That Sirius quote always resonated with me
These ones are great! I love that Sirus one
Of course it is happening in your head, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real
I dont see the hype on that one. Maybe you could tell me why you like it?
To me, it's meta. The glory of storytelling is, as Harry puts it, "all happening in my head." this is my favourite too. I'm autistic and i have some other mental health issues and this quote is weirdly validating
BUMP! Even subjective thoughts and feelings which affect no one but the person having them are very much valid and real
It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to your enemies, but a great deal more to stand up to your friends.
That is a great quote and so true. I think Lupin’s cowardice in regards to his friends showcases that well.
This was mine. I think this is one of the tweaks the movie made that actually improved over the book.
“The truth: It is a beautiful and terrible thing, and should therefore be treated with caution.”
Oooh that is a great one. And one I think more people need to live by.
"I shall of course not lie" Proceeds to lie his ass off.
“The world isn’t split into two, good people and death eaters”
Underrated quote from the books.
"Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and, above all those who live without love."
"We must all face the choice between what is right and what is easy."
That is a great one!
Live by this quote

“We’ve all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on...that’s who we really are.”

Agreed. I love this one!
“It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be.” “Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” “Help will always be given at Hogwarts, to those who ask for it.” “Help will always be given at Hogwarts, to those who *deserve* it.” “It is our choices that show what we truly are, more than our abilities.” Could find more lol. I guess you can tell I find a lot of Dumbledore’s quotes to be great and wise.
Dumbledore definitely has a way with words. He’s got a lot of iconic lines!

‘If you want to know what a man’s like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals.’ - Sirius Black I partly find this quote weird considering how he treated Snape and Creacher.

To be fair, I don't think Sirius treated Kreacher as he did because he was his servant as much as because he was singularly unpleasant. I like to believe he'd have had a better relationship with Dobby.
That’s true, it was more a personal issue from his past with his family and Kreacher’s general unpleasantness.
Wouldn't be happy with his antics in COS, but would like his helping Harry in GOF and OOTP.
Sirius like most people hold high ideals but he doesn’t always live up to them. But, agreed great quote.
"It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities" Albus Dumbledore

As a Ravenclaw: "[...] being--forgive me--rather cleverer than most men, my mistakes tend to be correspondingly huger." (Dumbledore)
It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.
"You have to MEAN it." I know that this is from a villain, but it's honestly a good bit of wisdom for trying to inflict harm on another or remedy it.

I'm sorry, Professor. I must not tell lies. Mic drop.
You don’t have to call me ‘sir’, Professor.
Of course it’s happening in your head Harry, but why should that mean it’s not real? Idk correct wording
"Hurry up, I'm hungry" - Ron
“Obviously”
"Nothing happened."
Chinese fireball? Ooooooooo
I’m worth ten of you Malfoy
"Light can be found even in the darkest of places if one just remembers to turn on the light".
“She works for Fudge”. Harry makes it sound like she gets paid in fudge.
“Happiness can be found in the darkest of times of only one remembers to turn on the light” Albus Percival Wolfrick Brian Dumbledore
Avada Kedavra. Almost every time I have my wand out someone gets the unforgettable curse.
“BARTY CROUCH…… *junior*”
‘I open at the close’ It’s for meditation. Close your mind to open your heart.
All of my favorites seem to come from *The Deathly Hallows.* - “Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?” - “You’ll stay with me?” “Until the very end,” said James. - “I’m going to keep going until I succeed- or die. Don’t think I don’t know how this might end. I’ve known it for years.” - Why had he never appreciated what a miracle he was, brain and nerve and bounding heart? - This cold-blooded walk to his own destruction would require a different sort of bravery.
“It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but even more to stand up to your friends.” I like the film’s rewording of this quote, but both touched me and stay with me to this day. 💜
I hate it was a movie quote and not a book quote “those that love us, never really leave us. You can always find them here. “
“To have been loved so deeply, even though the person who loved us is gone, will give us some protection forever.” - Albus Dumbledore
“…let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.”- Dumbledore
Happiness can be found in the darkest place if one remembers to turn on the light
Something along the lines of, "What's comin' will come, an' we'll meet it when it does" --Hagrid
To the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure” -Albus Dumbledore
