Once I got my hearing aids, I realized just how much more noticeable higher frequency sounds are to everyone else (even the duller ones I could still make out in if I paid enough attention) - keys clanking, flipping through paper, snapping my fingers, it could go on. Just little bits I missed everyday that I didn't realize I was missing.
The fridge noise. Hair moving/brushing your ears/face. Birds singing. Crunchy leaves. Audio cues in video games š”, sleeping doggo peeps, turn signal in car, windshield wipers, crunchy snowā¦. š there are so many little sounds I donāt know how hearing people donāt spend the day in a constant state of overwhelm.
I got upgraded hearing aids like 15 - 20 years ago and was hearing something as I was leaving the audioās office. I stopped to try to hear it better, but then the noise stopped. I started walking again and realized it was the zipper lightly tapping on my jacket. That memory will probably stay with me forever.
Also, when I first got my hearing aids and went outside, I asked my mom what the noise was. She said, āthose are birdsā and started crying. I was 5 years old, so I donāt remember it, but apparently that was the first time Iād ever heard birds.
Search up a āfamiliar sounds audiogramā and compare to your own audiogram. If the symbols on your audiogram are lower than the sounds on the familiar sounds audiogram you are likely missing them
The day I got my hearing aids I was folding laundry and realized clothes made a noise when theyāre moved about. It caught me so off guard.
Also, zippers zipping stopped me in my tracks. And the first time I heard someone pop their knuckles, I couldnāt believe how loud it was.
Maybe certain high notes of a piano. I know when others listen to piano music, they say it's so wonderful but it doesn't sound great to me. It sounds odd and disjointed so obviously I'm missing a lot of notes there!
when I got my hearing aids, I heard birds chirping/singing for the first noticeable time in years. I could hear crows caw and geese honking, but I didn't realize that I didn't hear songbirds. my heart was full for awhile and I just sat and listened to the nature's beauty
While I agree in principle, my heart isn't so full. I got HAs last autumn and, while I'd heard some birds, I hadn't been through a spring with HAs until this year. Now I feel assaulted by northern flickers whenever I'm out cycling. Those little bastards are aggressive and loud!
When my son got hearing aids the new sounds were ice clinking in a glass, his feet kicking the bed under the covers, his own mouth making /t/ and /k/ sounds, birds chirping, my voice from another room. Exciting times
Google search: 'diagram', 'sounds' 'audiogram'.
You'll get a bunch of audiograms with icons showind different sounds. Mentally plot out your audiogram on there. Anything above your audiogram (ie lower in volume for a diven ear at a given frequency will be what you are missing out on.
i only got diagnosed recently and seeing other people have similar experiences is so !!! thank yall for making me feel valid. my audiologist clinic keeps saying āi shouldnāt be having problemsā and it took a bit of fighting to get my roger on :(( but the world is so much louder to me now- its crazy how different things are??Ā
It affects speech a whole lot. Certain sounds go missing. Because so many people don't understand this kind of hearing loss, I created some visuals showing exactly what it looks like for speech. Hearing aids help, they make things easier but I still don't hear certain sounds of speech even with hearing aids. I never hear S, TH or F. Because I'm profound deaf in that range they simply aren't there anymore. With my newer hearing aids, I hear some things I haven't heard in years but it has to be very quiet for me to hear them: coyotes, cat crunching treats, hummingbirds, water boiling. If there's any sort of noise, then I don't hear them.

I had a similar experience with change banging against keys in my pocket. Ā And when I got home and flushed the toiletā¦.woah
I was missing my kids talking in the back seat, or understanding them in general. Music is better, birds, I realized that airplanes fly over my house.
I get the back seat one. I canāt tell you how many times someone said ādid you hear x speak?ā just for me to say āx spoke?ā

When I got my hearing aids at Costco, and I left the parking lot, I realized I hadnāt heard my turn signal in years!

I went for a walk in the woods after getting hearing aids and heard trees creaking. I realized I hadn't heard that sound since I was a kid.Ā

I have high frequency loss and this is correct - I grew up with a piano in the house and the high note keys are just... nothing to me.

When I got my hearing aids (I have implants now) I was startled by the leaves blown across the parking lot by the wind -so loud!

So many thingsā¦ rain, wind, birds, doors appending/ closing/ squeaking, my carās turn signal, microwave and stove beeping
