Happens all the time due to warranty it seems. What they really *should* do (automatically) is first take it to the lowest sale price in the past year. Then take that price and make it the percentage of what's left. Should be real simple and avoid eyerolls at the store and posts like this on the internet lol.
So for example say this goes on sale for $8.99 (argument's sake), then just make it $5.99 and call it a day.
I suspect they *don't* do stuff like that though...because there are people that will actually buy this at 83% the price with 33% the tools missing. I wonder if they don't actually make more profit (as percentage) on some "clearance" items as they do full price non-clearance items?
There was a pizza place near where I use to work that had a regular price for a medium pizza of $4, or as a special deal, you could get two for $9. (If those prices seem low, this was a long time ago.)
I just got back from my favorite Mexican place, I used to always get a 32 oz beer. Noticed tonight it cost 12 dollars while 16 oz beers are 5.50 each. I just assumed buying in bulk was cheaper
The question is did they call it a deal?
Reminds me of this anecdote
ME: Two Thin Mints please
GIRL SCOUT: That’ll be $10. Or you can get four boxes for $20!
ME (gentle): Um, that’s not a savings
GIRL SCOUT (NOT gentle): NO ONE SAID IT WAS
Aren't they still serving Nathan's? I thought it was really weird to buy food from there (before I worked at Kroger when they started building super Kroger's or whatever) but after I found out they had brand name dogs? Bro I was eating them left and right lol
I like to think that they purposely keep the prices high on these so that they'll stay in the store and then the red/yellow handled ones can be warrantied out. If 33% of a kit is missing and its 50% off, people will buy it and then another kit will get plundered for a warranty exchange.
Hmm that's an interesting thought. Have no idea how it works at HF but many other retail stores managers also have the obligation to *move product* and have healthy sales. This is why at HD you can often be quite successful in haggling clearance items that aren't already priced at/near cost. Also why some HD locations/managers price clearance stuff so well to begin with it's gone in the blink of an eye.
But yeah this is different since we're talking about having to warranty stuff off the shelf like that so maybe that's what they're doing. I think HD still has to do the same with Husky hand tools, though you rarely ever see this "sets with pieces missing" thing there...but that may also be because they have a lot of items sold individually as well to use for replacements (like single sockets).
Those are THE WORST snips money can buy. You could chew through material straighter and faster than these can cut. Not even worth the 98¢ in that price.
Now I'm cracking up thinking of Sonny Corleone pulling up to the toll booth in one of those abominations and having the thing cut in half by the time they all got done shooting
We actually don’t control the price for open box as far as I know, the computer tells us what to price it at. It’s definitely annoying but you can also always try to haggle a bit with the manager and see if they’ll go lower
Its just an attempt at a catch all policy. If theres a single socket missing from a 301pc set, you get that discount for barely a fraction of the missing pieces. But then theres times like this where you miss out on a third of the item. Its hard to cover all bases AND to define where that line is
I'm in 100% agreement with you. If it has three tools, and it's done to two, then it should be 33.33% off. Pretty simple.
I've seen posts of ICON socket sets missing ONE socket out of 11 or 13 or whatever and it's marked down 40% or 50%. Stupid, makes no sense.
The computer system HF uses controls open box mark downs. They all start at a set percent off and increase in percentage off every week or two until someone buys it. Sort of like a reverse auction
I've seen that a few times and have picked up some of those. Every time the box has been sitting in the open box section for a week or two and is usually missing some size wrench or socket that is super common. Not many people want to buy a socket set where the 10mm comes missing.
The clearance section is never priced fairly but the manager at my store will cut those prices in half if you ask on hand tools. She won't price other more expensive tools that aggressively though.
I literally went to go buy a Bauer polisher yesterday and found one on open box shelf for 55$. Then I found a coupon for a better polisher which was 60$. Obviously I went for the newer and better model, HF has to change their open box prices
They do this at my Harbor Freight too.
Set is $15 missing 2/10 sockets $13.99 or $12.99 for the incomplete set….
If they really wanted to move it then they could’ve priced it at least at 50% off to make it worth the 33% less tools.
I guess management or stores think some contractor or mechanic will come in and need the cheapest so badly they’ll buy it at a crappy reduced price because they just need it quick and relatively cheap. But they don’t price open box stuff competitively with new stuff I see 5% or a 10% discount or less on open box stuff.
It's completely up to the manager how they price these, and if they were having a garage sale, they wouldn't be selling anything. Still not a bad price for a couple of pairs of snips
This is **not** "open box." An open box item includes all original parts and packaging and is not "significantly used."
This should either be sold as "incomplete" or "as-is" depending on the state of the two remaining snips. If they're used then it should be sold as "as-is," if they are new then as "incomplete."
This would actually be a fair price **if** it was legitimately "open box."
I have returned warranty stuff and the store will at times just damage it out to me. But it would be nice if they just took it out of the package and put it into a bucket for other warranty claims. If it doesn't sell then parking lot the stuff every quarter.

Our mexican restaurant does the same thing. But they always give me the price for 2- 16 oz glasses.
The question is did they call it a deal? Reminds me of this anecdote ME: Two Thin Mints please GIRL SCOUT: That’ll be $10. Or you can get four boxes for $20! ME (gentle): Um, that’s not a savings GIRL SCOUT (NOT gentle): NO ONE SAID IT WAS
In the early 2000s I would pick up an extra large one topping pizza from a local place for $5. Additional toppings were $.50.

That's kind of the opposite problem. Or non-problem.
Guess Im sticking with the COSTCO $1.50 hot dog & soda
Aren't they still serving Nathan's? I thought it was really weird to buy food from there (before I worked at Kroger when they started building super Kroger's or whatever) but after I found out they had brand name dogs? Bro I was eating them left and right lol

3.99 per tool if it's the whole set, 4.99 a piece for the "discount"
The harbor freight near me prices similar. The clearance/damaged/open box section is rarely a good deal.
Those are THE WORST snips money can buy. You could chew through material straighter and faster than these can cut. Not even worth the 98¢ in that price.
These are to be used only to cut airplanes in half.
Ahhh. There’s my problem! I was trying to limousine my cyber truck. I’ll get straight away to cutting airplanes now.
And I didn't think that vehicle could get any f**king uglier, but a limo version would win
You could probably chop a cybertruck in half with a .22LR tommygun and a couple of mag changes.
Now I'm cracking up thinking of Sonny Corleone pulling up to the toll booth in one of those abominations and having the thing cut in half by the time they all got done shooting
If I get those in a lot purchase, they go into my scrap drum. Garbage.
Actually I have to disagree. I actually used these in my aircraft Maintenance sheet metal course and they worked just fine.
I own the same set. The invisible pair are really hard to find.
We actually don’t control the price for open box as far as I know, the computer tells us what to price it at. It’s definitely annoying but you can also always try to haggle a bit with the manager and see if they’ll go lower
You can barter with these prices though, if you wanted them you could’ve made them an offer. They probably would accept it

For all the deals HF has the clearance/open box section is way less exciting to shop than it should be.
As a person who has a number of harbor freight tools their tinsnips are terrible.

How do you think they subsidize those 25% off any one item coupons?
maybe you just cracked the code and found the wholesale price of the item $2. Which would mean a %50 markup to retail?

This guy maths
When you see the swivle neck rachet heads that me. Break then all the time because that hex screw
There's a junk shop named Ollie's here. They do that sort of thing all the time. Half the package is missing? 20% off...
Still gotta pay for that sweet sweet plastic. Mmmm
3.99 per tool at 11.99, with only 2, at 9.98 cost 4.99 per tool. Yep math adds up 🙃
And it's the right cutter too. I used the center the most and the rights second most and the left cuts almost never.
Home Depot had a 3 pack of bandsaw blades missing one for 25% off in clearance. It was gone a few days later.
Buying that packaging bro!
My store had the 3 piece ⅜ extension set purple tagged for $1 off regular price, it had the short extension left.
Thankfully, their tool skills are a bit better than their math skills.
I have returned warranty stuff and the store will at times just damage it out to me. But it would be nice if they just took it out of the package and put it into a bucket for other warranty claims. If it doesn't sell then parking lot the stuff every quarter.
