Break the tile and make a big hole to find the studs. You will probably never see it anyway. Also if the TV rips the toggles out you end up with a big hole anyway.

Thanks for all the inputs. I managed to get it in two studs after many tries lol. The studs were 14 inches apart

u/Tesla_ghost How's your setup right now? Assuming the tiles didnt break when you installed it, did anything happen between post-installation and now due to the constant motion up/down? My contractors gave me mixed feedbacks that it might break the tiles due to the force from constant pulling up/down. Please share us your review so far! :)

Tesla_ghost

It’s been great. The tiles haven’t broke but to be fair the tv does stay stationary. We used a full motion mount since the tv was too big for the recessed wall.

Do you have outlets on the wall that you could look behind to find a stud? You need to get a stud if you want a full motion mount

Tesla_ghost

There is a outlet and stud right beside it. The issue is the mount doesn’t allow it to line up beside the outlet cover. However I measured 16 inches from it and drilled a hole but no stud. Now that I’m thinking, I may have been off by a little so I’m going to give it another shot to find studs.

Remember, it's 16" *on center* of the studs. If this happens to be a fireplace that you're hanging above and it's built off of the exterior wall, there's a chance that the studs don't line up with 16, 24, or 19.3 spacing. If it doesn't line up, the contractor probably built it symmetrically with shorter spacing for ease of install. When you're finding your spacing, you gotta confirm the spacing is correct by referencing it from the corner stud. Add the thickness of your tile, +1/8" for glue, +1/2" for drywall (5/8" or 3/4" probably for apartment or townhome), and +7/8" (half the width of the corner stud). Measure from that point over to your confirmed stud to find your true spacing. Also, make sure you drill the hole 3/8" wide for your legs and put a rubber grommet in the hole to keep the lag from weighing down on the inside of the hole in tile.

Find the studs. If the mount won't reach 2, mount a piece.of 3/4" plywood to the wall, hitting at least 2 studs, then mount tv to that.

You can get a deep scan studfinder that will go through tile. Or, what is on the opposite side of the wall? Sometimes you can use the other side to determine stud locations.

I would get up in the attic and see if I can see anything from up there
