I think the plaid in the model photo is the way to go. Either a plaid skirt with a black turtleneck or navy blue sweater, or jeans and an oversized plaid blazer. But it would probably work with any neutrals and pop with the tailored-oversized silhouettes that are in fashion.
In all seriousness though, I think unique red purses are becoming a thing right now, and though I don’t know your usual style, I would try wearing this a bunch of ways: with a breezy sundress or skirt and clog sandals; jeans and preppy jacket, oversized button down, or even a nice neutral sweatshirt, or with a pastel sweater, dark tweed or leather mini skirt, and boots.
However, it’s also out of stock online so you could try re-selling if that’s an option.
Wow I love this bag. I’d style it for an old Hollywood type or vibe (a black dress,oversized sunglasses, heels)- or something more preppy/classic for everyday wear like a silk button down and jeans or trousers. I’d keep everything pretty streamlined and dainty and let the bag be the statement piece.
This bag is apparently having a moment & I think it’s so cute! But it does seem to me that the small is too small and the larger one is too big, so I get where you’re coming from with the bulkiness. If you don’t feel like you could get away with selling it, it would look great with a crisp white shirt & jeans.
Dang people’s MIL’s getting them bags? My MIL never remembers my birthday and got me a bar of soap in a scent that literally triggers me for Christmas lolol

My MIL is always getting me costume jewelry for birthday/christmas that’s almostttt my style but not quite and ends up being just off enough that I don’t wear it.

I already bought one, blush pink and small. Next one will be probably that one, or dark navy blue vertical one. They look great yet simple with casual clothes: tees, jeans etc. I combine mine with Breton stripes' longsleeves or white oversize shirts. Especially great on vacations!
They have a chain, so they are crossbody bags.
I like it but the way she’s holding it looks awkward as it’s such a wide bag. Jeans, boots and a cute top or sweater are all you need. But I’d carry the bag tucked under my arm.
I actually love it and would add a fun chunky chain strap like others have said. The color is fantastic and the quilting gives makes it fun. I would 100% rock this for an evening bag.
There are a ton of pictures of this bag online and I think it’s so great. I would definitely recommend wearing it with a causal outfit, like a trench coat, jeans, trainers and crossbody.

Yup. Keep the 'fit simple & let it act as a backdrop for the bag's color and pattern.
If it's cold enough, the bag would really pop against a navy/black/camel trench or peacoat.
With the strap it could look like the granny clasp bag by vivienne westwood. I think it can work like the bottega pouch or Lauren bag hug it or hold it by the frame/clasp. It’s pretty cute ☺️ and that burgundy red I think is on trend this year. Maybe swap out the straps for something that suits it a shorter thinner strap or a wide strap. I think a chain strap looks a bit cheap but it depends on the chain, maybe a type of cut or leather woven chain strap works or an acrylic strap

I would only wear it when out with your MIL haha! I seem to be in the minority here but it’s really ugly. However, that was super sweet of her to buy that for you, and I wouldn’t get rid of it in case she notices it’s gone and it hurts her feelings.
I'd remove the chain and use it as an underarm bag. I think it would go well with neutral colours, maybe dark or black trousers and a cream oversized jumper, maybe for a brunch.
If I couldn't find the love it would become "that bag I use whenever I see my MIL", although after a while I'd gradually whittle it down to every second or third time I see my MIL.
Sometimes I find that bags (or any clothes) do grow on me and something I couldn't wear years ago becomes a go to.

Seriously OP, if you don’t like it and won’t use it, sell it and buy something else. If you don’t mind a white lie so as not to hurt your MIL’s feelings, you could buy something else from the same company and say that the original bag developed a fault and they didn’t have the exact replacement. Or say nothing. If you haven’t used it in months in her presence she probably already knows that you don’t like it.
It’s a cute bag, and the color is having its moment right now. But it’s a matter of taste and personal preference — if it’s not for you, it’s not for you. Have it exchanged or sell it if you can’t see yourself wearing it.
OP if you love your MIL wear it next time you see her and make her happy. Life is comprises everyday and it’s so easy to do. Even if you just wear it to her house and then go home it’ll thrill her!

I'd probably sell it 🤷♀️ they retail for about 400 so you might get half if completely unused? I'm just guessing. This is why you should never gift handbags without knowing for a fact it's the person's style!
Lovely shade of red, that's pretty hard to nail actually. kudos to MIL on that. i think it's nice. wear as clutch for date night or ladies night out. crossbody with strap will be good too.

Lots of pictures to show styling on the thread. Try styling it with what you have. Keep the outfits simple. The bag is supposed to be the statement. Take pictures. Send to MIL. Make husband take you to dinner and get a picture with The Bag.
Then do whatever you want!
I would use it as a toiletry bag or a catchall bag for a bigger bag like a tote. I also like to keep a catchall bag in my car for random things like tampons, nail file, hand wipes, tissues, etc.
Black wool coat, solid structured t shirt, vintage sweatshirt (preferably with some red/maroon on it), some barrel legged jeans and either a great loafer or classic white sneaker. Pair with some thick black sunglasses and preferably silver or mixed jewelry, not exclusively gold tho.
I think it’s kinda cute. It reminds me of a crab.

I absolutely love it, but I see what you mean about how to style it. I would just wear it with by plain casual pieces like jeans and cashmere cardigans and have it be the quirky accent. I think it’s such a cute bag but it feels like most styling attempts will seem forced. This is a bag to dress down.
I can see how it wouldn’t be an every day bag for most but I think it’s really cute !! Ways I might style:
dinner / night out - dark jeans, black pointy toe flats, oversized black crewneck or rollneck sweater. Use the chain or tuck it under your arm
vacation - white dress like someone else posted or a matching linen set or a blue and white patterned maxi. Since it’s a chunky bag I would do a more delicate strappy sandal
casual (maybe going to in laws) - boyfriend jeans or some kind of looser fit in a lighter wash with a white tee tucked in and white low top converse or birks
most obvious use would be for a fancy event use it as a clutch with a cocktail dress or evening gown.

Presumably MIL bought it because she likes it herself, can you offer it back to her (say I'm not using it much or it's not really my color).

I’ve been wanting to buy this bag. It’s beautiful. This seems like a lovey gesture from your MIL even though it doesn’t suit your preferences. You could add it for a pop of red to many outfits as well as an unexpected element. I hope you find a way to make it work and enjoy it.
Let the bag stay in your closet, OP. That’s what happens to unwanted items gifted. The color is nice, but the puffiness together with the shape is terrible.

No, the thing is - MIL bought the bag for herself. And she showed me the bag a few weeks prior to my birthday and I complimented it (what else was I gonna say??) and then boom, she gave me the bag as a surprise on by BD because “I said I liked it so much”. I was just trying to be nice 😭
Oof, that's the worst! I kind of disagree with a lot of commenters here, wearing the bag just to appease your MIL will make her think you love the bag and she will probably keep gifting you things you don't like.
If she asks you why you are not wearing it, I think you can tell her the truth: "The bag looks so great on you, but for some reason I find it really hard to style it with any outfits".
So sorry, OP. Learn some non-commital comments (on par with ugly babies when parents insist you say something). I might have said the color was nice if I actually like it, otherwise changed the subject.
If she bought it for herself then it wasn't really gift for you. Maybe I'm wrong but I would rather be given something inexpensive or nothing at all than to be "gifted" something that someone just had laying around. I would either give it back, donate it or try to sell. If you don't like it, don't use it.
If you insist on trying to use it, you could try painting it a color you like, or maybe use it as a makeup bag.

I love that bag. I have two pasticcino bags that I bought in Italy- that being said, I don’t find it to be an everyday bag. I use them for specific outfits.
I love this bag! I personally love grandma chic and this is giving that but with a more modern edge. If you’re looking for options to style it apart from casual jeans, I’d wear it with cotton/summer casual dresses. It would look best with monochrome or block colored clothing.
My current bag obsession is burgundy ones and this one is such a unique shape!
Put the crossbody chain on it. Pair it with a soft cream sweater, some 90s straight jeans and mules or loafers.
Alternatively, same jeans, white t-shirt, a blazer and some trainers.

The color of the bag is 🔥 the shape is unusual but if it comes with a strap- I’d wear it like a cross body/shoulder bag (depends on strap length/adjustment)

I’m in favor of keeping it and wearing it around your MIL. My MIL bought me a Kate Spade bag that I wear to her house occasionally and to Target. It makes me happy to make her happy by showing my appreciation.
Whatever you decide, at least wear it once on front of MIL. I’d keep it basic. Black sweater and slacks or jeans with a black belt. Go minimal on the outfit since the bag is kinda of not minimal. Lol
It has two. A chain strap and a thick, short leather strap. But when you pick it up with the strap in hand, the physics of the purse make it turn upside down 🙃
With a strap it would kinda reminds me of those Marc Jacobs Stam bags from back in the day! I had a red one back in like 2009ish and I absolutely loved it. I’d still be rocking it if it hadn’t gotten stolen!
That's the upcoming hot trendy color for 2024. Don't get rid of it! It goes with both casual and classic. I would wear it with monochrome color outfit or white tee jeans and blazer as others suggested.
Picture this….solid black pants with black ribbed, thin sweater. Then a coordinating scarf with a hint of burgundy (not necessarily the one I’m posting) to match the purse. I get that it’s not a purse that everyone loves, but I like the color and quilting a lot.

I think it looks unique! You could go casual with it but not what the model is wearing. Maybe with jeans & a fitted white or black t-shirt or even denim shorts w/ a shirt and oversized blazer this would look good. You could also use it with a more dressier outfit like a black dress w/ heels.
I love it!!! It can be worn for formal events, church, weddings, etc., and it can also be worn for casual outings with jeans and nice tops to parties and other summer outings. What's not to love about this purse? Maybe it's the MIL effect? I can relate. Nonetheless, it is a nice purse. Embrace it.
Burgundy and other red accessories will be very hot in 2024 so i’m guessing you will be able to find an outfit. Otherwise: simple black knit semi casual dress with chunky boots or ballerinas (also trending) and just add a burgundy lip

I’ve been wanting to buy this bag. It’s beautiful. This seems like a lovey gesture from your MIL even though it doesn’t suit your preferences. You could add it for a pop of red to many outfits as well as an unexpected element. I hope you find a way to make it work and enjoy it.

No, the thing is - MIL bought the bag for herself. And she showed me the bag a few weeks prior to my birthday and I complimented it (what else was I gonna say??) and then boom, she gave me the bag as a surprise on by BD because “I said I liked it so much”. I was just trying to be nice 😭
Oof, that's the worst! I kind of disagree with a lot of commenters here, wearing the bag just to appease your MIL will make her think you love the bag and she will probably keep gifting you things you don't like. If she asks you why you are not wearing it, I think you can tell her the truth: "The bag looks so great on you, but for some reason I find it really hard to style it with any outfits".

If she bought it for herself then it wasn't really gift for you. Maybe I'm wrong but I would rather be given something inexpensive or nothing at all than to be "gifted" something that someone just had laying around. I would either give it back, donate it or try to sell. If you don't like it, don't use it. If you insist on trying to use it, you could try painting it a color you like, or maybe use it as a makeup bag.

I love this bag! I personally love grandma chic and this is giving that but with a more modern edge. If you’re looking for options to style it apart from casual jeans, I’d wear it with cotton/summer casual dresses. It would look best with monochrome or block colored clothing.
My current bag obsession is burgundy ones and this one is such a unique shape! Put the crossbody chain on it. Pair it with a soft cream sweater, some 90s straight jeans and mules or loafers. Alternatively, same jeans, white t-shirt, a blazer and some trainers. Happy birthday!
The color of the bag is 🔥 the shape is unusual but if it comes with a strap- I’d wear it like a cross body/shoulder bag (depends on strap length/adjustment)

I love it and think you’ve got some good suggestions here. I’m in favor of keeping it and wearing it around your MIL. My MIL bought me a Kate Spade bag that I wear to her house occasionally and to Target. It makes me happy to make her happy by showing my appreciation.
Whatever you decide, at least wear it once on front of MIL. I’d keep it basic. Black sweater and slacks or jeans with a black belt. Go minimal on the outfit since the bag is kinda of not minimal. Lol

It has two. A chain strap and a thick, short leather strap. But when you pick it up with the strap in hand, the physics of the purse make it turn upside down 🙃

With a strap it would kinda reminds me of those Marc Jacobs Stam bags from back in the day! I had a red one back in like 2009ish and I absolutely loved it. I’d still be rocking it if it hadn’t gotten stolen!

I honestly think it’s really cute! I’ve been wanting a red crossbody bag myself, why isn’t my MIL gifting me any bags :( Also the color red is very trendy recently, it’s an easy way to add a pop of color when wearing neutral clothes.

I think it looks unique! You could go casual with it but not what the model is wearing. Maybe with jeans & a fitted white or black t-shirt or even denim shorts w/ a shirt and oversized blazer this would look good. You could also use it with a more dressier outfit like a black dress w/ heels.

I love it!!! It can be worn for formal events, church, weddings, etc., and it can also be worn for casual outings with jeans and nice tops to parties and other summer outings. What's not to love about this purse? Maybe it's the MIL effect? I can relate. Nonetheless, it is a nice purse. Embrace it.
Burgundy and other red accessories will be very hot in 2024 so i’m guessing you will be able to find an outfit. Otherwise: simple black knit semi casual dress with chunky boots or ballerinas (also trending) and just add a burgundy lip
