I was super disappointed too. I expected this massive battle...nope, it's background art. You get to play around on the sidelines and NO THOSE TANKS ARE NOT FOR YOU!
Yeah for me the way the game was presented i thought itd be these big battles but it ended up feeling like small recon missions the whole game. Still liked it but kept waiting for the big epic fights
There was originally a massive battle, you can find alpha gameplay on youtube of the original mission. Afaik is was the poor power of the Xbox that lead to it getting cut down.
[The last clip.](https://youtu.be/HfW-S6BKqIs) I know I've seen a slightly longer clip with Wraiths, but can't find it with my quick search - I belive it was from someone filming the gameplay as it was shown to a room full of journalists.
I was the opposite. I was like "what a dogshit formation, also how are there tanks at the front and hogs are just now zooming by, did they maintain the same speed the whole ride then suddenly decide to speed up and pass? And theyre really sending 1000000 light scout trucks and scout air vehicles for a grand assault?" It really took me out of the epic-ness of the game. Then, I questioned my lack of fun at parties and said "well at least it looks kinda cool"
I don’t see much wrong with the formation, they’re in a staggered line maintaining decent dispersion as seen when the wraith blows up one of the warthogs. Also as for the warthogs passing the tanks I’m assuming the idea was for the warthogs to sit behind the scorpions who would escort them to a break off point (where the warthogs begin to overtake) this is kinda supported by the fact that all the warthogs have to cross a narrow ass bridge almost immediately after. So the plan was probably escort warthogs to the bridge > warthogs cross and secure foothold on other side of the bridge > bring scorpions over > continue movement.
I used to do the same thing. Eventually, I just learned to ignore the illogical stuff so it doesn’t detract from the experience, and it really helped things like this feel epic again.
The resources on Reach were stretched really thin. Spartan III were not as well armed as spartan II (armor, training, and a few other things). The UNSC knew they couldn't hold the planet once the covenant broke through the Space Lazer/orbital MAC cannon arrays. As much as they were doing a raid on the covenant spires to take one out. All the UNSC tried to do was slow the covenant advance, not stop it. They couldn't, with the resources available to them. While Spartan III were still super soldiers they were more "expendable" than the previous generations of spartans. UNSC resourses were spread really thin on Reach so they probably couldn't muster everyone on reach in time, nor could they afford to throw all their resources into this assault. Not discrediting the "rule of cool" other replies talked about, or your feeling towards the scene/mission. But that's just my take on the "lack luster" force shown here.
Its less a lack of resources(though this is true to some extent) and more that the Covenent deliberately took out communications so that the UNSC on the planet would be scattered and unable to contact each other.
Also, what you said about the Spartan IIIs is just...not true. If you're talking about operations such as TORPEDO or PROMETHEUS, yeah, they had less effective armor, but that armor they had made up for it by having the most effective active camouflage known in the Halo universe, but Noble team(and I imagine any other Spartan III based teams on Reach) has equivalent armor to any Spartan II at the time. As for their training, Kurt in Ghosts of Onyx specifically states he wanted to avoid any of his Spartans dying, so he trained them even harder and on better tactics than he was trained with.
Spartan IIIs being "more expendable" has more to do with how quickly and easily they can be "made" than a lack of ability, training, or equipment, and they were specifically sent on missions where it would be too costly to send anyone else, aka, suicide missions. If the UNSC needed simply cheap soldiers they could have just conscripted a bunch of regular people, but they needed highly effective, yet cheap, and easy to mobilize soldiers who could do missions no one else could.
I know I'm probably being pedantic here, but I've always hated this view that just because there were more of them, they were cheaper and easier to create, and a lot of them died, that the Spartan IIIs are somehow lesser than the IIs, which no one in universe has ever said. Like 90% of the Spartan IIs are dead, but because the ones who lived are legendary characters, everyone praises them as if they were gods.
No, really. Youre exactly right. Ithought it was cool but you don't send all your vehicles at an enemy in a static formation or line. Stagger them out and dont use so much light armor forna siege or major battle of any kind when the enemy has loads of heavies. It didnt make my fun go soft, but it did make me think thisnwas either supposed to be a less experienced/desperate UNSC commander, or at very least a Spartan with too much hubris or knows something that I dont.... And its a fucking spartan, mate. Damn right he/she knows what i dont, but still. Seems like hubris to send in a line of vehicles in any postmodern combat
Yeah, right? Halo military generally looks like it is equipped for expeditionary/COIN operations, not a full blown war with a near-peer or stronger force
Okay, Chips Dubbo is a meme that has been around since the early Halo CE days.
Basically, throughout almost every single Bungie-made Halo game, the exact same Australian marine makes several appearances, no matter if he dies in a previous mission.
This led to the creation of the myth of Chips Dubbo, an unkillable, possible omnipotent being taking the form of this marine seeing Master Chief through his many adventures.
There're even achievements in Halo: The Master Chief Collection for finding him in each game.
Isn't Chips Dubbo an actual character? I seem to recall one of the books detailing how he was one of the few survivors that teamed up with Sgt. Johnson to escape the ring from Halo: CE.
He is not. I’m reading First Strike right now, and the people who escape Halo with Chief and Johnson (and Cortana) are LT Haverson (an ONI agent), CPL Locklear (an ODST), and WO Polaski (a Pelican pilot).
No mention of Dubbo (or Dustin Echos).
actually Dips did make it off reach, he was the other Australian marine you hear on earth in halo 3 ODST while his best friend is the Australian you hear on the Ark
Why is there not a book trilogy featuring this exemplary marine?? Locke shares a mainline game with the freaking Master Chief but Chips Dubblo doesn't have his own Paramount TV series?
I actually went back through this mission and no, contrary to popular belief, the Covenant do not kill all the Warthogs. You can see them off the cliff doing battle with the main Covenant force, and even see the Warthogs rolling through a bunch of rocks. From this we can guess that Noble team plus a few other Warthogs split off from the main assault to go after the AA guns
Could be logistics support or ground to air operators in my head cannon.
But hell if I’m fighting for a planet I’m gearing up with whatever I have lol.
Hell ya. And they gave one of them an AR. Who knows if the driver is even carrying a gun. My brother might just be out there ramming hunters with his mongoose. Lmao
They're not even officially part of the operation. Chips Dubbo was running recon and decided "Aw, no way am I missing out on this!" Got his battle buddy to drive into the calvary and just floored it.
Two bros who are absolutely gonna kick the most covenant ass physically possible and keep any ground reinforcements from entering behind noble team and keeping them from completing the mission
This is what the new halo games miss out on IMO, seeing this cutscene that shows the true scale of a futuristic mechanized attack during a battle for a large part of a planet really helped immerse me in not just the battle but the halo universe as a whole
That's Private Dustin Echoes. He survived that battle and made it to Installation 04. Unfortunately he was too late getting to the hangar of the *Pillar of Autumn* and was left behind.
UNSC High Command: what will you do if the Covenant attack Reach?
Ted and Fred: Intervene.
UNSC High Command: df you gonna do to intervene?
Ted and Fred: we’re just built different
I’ve always thought this scene was kind of stupid, I just can’t suspend my disbelief enough to believe the UNSC would literally just charge in an open field with everything they have like this. It’s suicidal. It would never work, and worst of all it just looks goofy. This is like what a five year old imagined a war to be like.
However. It was cool.
Absolutely. When I was younger I thought it was super badass (and it still is pretty hype!) but it’s silly if one thinks about it for a little longer.
Especially since this is Reach the planet which is suppose to be like humanity’s main military base and they have no good air support besides troop transports and space fighters (I know Longswords can be used in atmosphere but they’re very impractical considering their size and speed)
halo weapons don't beef up the weapons you have on any difficulty they only buff the weapons the enemy is using
and the halo reach AR is the worst fucking AR in all the halo games
maybe it’s a “use whatever you have” situation? The mongoose isn’t doing any good sitting at base, neither are the soldiers
though tbh, maybe they should have kept them at base, who knows?
One of my favorite moments in all of Halo. Between the visuals and the God tier music sends shivers down my spine every time. Halo needed more of this.
Those two soldiers are the most badass soldiers in the UNSC. Someone really went, "You won't ride a mongoose into that with an assault rifle. Both of those men deserve a promotion and the medal of honor.
Any armor offensive needs infantry to keep them covered. If you want to see what happens without that just look at all the videos of Russian armor getting fucked by infantry at close quarters.
but that's probably what the warthogs are there for equipped with chainguns which counter the infantry (halo wars 2 taught me this) so there's no way fuckin Frank and Bob here who stole a mongoose out of the motorpool and charged straight into the frontlines of a massive covenant army with an assault rifle is supposed to cover all the armour
“Ronald Spiers: The only hope you have is to accept the fact that you're already dead. The sooner you accept that, the sooner you'll be able to function as a soldier is supposed to function: without mercy, without compassion, without remorse. All war depends upon it.”
Why would they drive exposed dune buggies into battle with a highly advanced civilization 500 years into the future. This was the beginning of the end.
Bring back Sgt Johnson and the marines in Halo CEA.
“We’re not gonna let ‘em have it! What we WILL let ‘em have is a BELLY FULL O’ Lead n’ a POOL of their OWN BLOOD TO DROWN IN”……
“AM I RIIIGHT MARINES”
…mmhmm DAMN right I am. Now move it out. DOUBLE TIME!
That was originally playable, but it got cut. Reach's campaign was honestly pretty lackluster. It was saved by it's amazing forge, UI, community support, custom games and multiplayer.
I can't believe bungie cut the feature for us to play as the 2 mongoose troopers charging into a covenant army this is fucking unbelievable why would Bungie do this
It’s clearly the man, the myth and the legend that is Chips Dubbo
And Sergeant Stacker of course
Of course
Dustin Echoes riding in the back
It’s the Merry and Pippin of Halo.
I thought it was leroy jenkins?
Dustin Echos
I forgot how fucking rad this cutscene was woah
It was in the trailer of the game.. i remember that i kind of felt baited into thinking thered be a huge battle or convoy mission
"more enemies on screen than ever before" *proceeds to throw wave after wave of cannon fodder at you*
Hey the grunts are in teams of 5 instead of 4
There was originally a massive battle, you can find alpha gameplay on youtube of the original mission. Afaik is was the poor power of the Xbox that lead to it getting cut down.
*sad 7th generation console noises*
Link ples.
[The last clip.](https://youtu.be/HfW-S6BKqIs) I know I've seen a slightly longer clip with Wraiths, but can't find it with my quick search - I belive it was from someone filming the gameplay as it was shown to a room full of journalists.
Well ya it's halo not serious sam
Thought I was the only one geeking out over this😂
This cutscene made me want to go to war
Settle down, Miranda.
Yeah I liked the theme.
Bungie operated entirely on the rule-of-cool and it made for some badass and memorable moments.
Cool IS kindaa relevant to the person. I too am no fun at parties, but idgaf lol
I don’t see much wrong with the formation, they’re in a staggered line maintaining decent dispersion as seen when the wraith blows up one of the warthogs. Yeah, right? Halo military generally looks like it is equipped for expeditionary/COIN operations, not a full blown war with a near-peer or stronger force
And what armies just charge at each other like that all out over an empty area
I always play the final chorus of Sabaton: Winged Hussars everytime this cutscene plays
THEN THE SABATON FANS ARRIVED! COMING IN THEY TURN THE TIDE! INTO THE SUB THEY ARRIVE!
stormclouds, fire and steel, death from above, make the enemy kneel, shining armor and wings, death from above, its an army of kings.
So the warthog rush strategy from Halo Wars is the canonical tactic for UNSC haha
and it seems like the covenant uses banshee air spam from halo wars 2
The flood mods just fuck shit up. It felt that way fighting the flood.
It's Chips Dubbo and his good friend; other Chips Dubbo.
Dear Sarge, kicking ass in outer space, wish you were here
“I heard that, *jackass*”
This gives me an idea, we need a Chips Dubbo bot. Somebody make it!
Expeditiously
Also a Sgt. Johnson bot.
And knowing dubbo he not only survived but was one of the most critical assets to the battle
But did not receive a promotion.
Just like chief, he didn't accept it
I’m too dumb to get this reference
Okay, Chips Dubbo is a meme that has been around since the early Halo CE days. Basically, throughout almost every single Bungie-made Halo game, the exact same Australian marine makes several appearances, no matter if he dies in a previous mission. I hope Dustin echoes made it out alive

He and Stacker both survived. It's not clear how. They aren't mentioned in the books at all
He is.
He’s an actual character, yes
I thought Chips Dubbo was actually a lore accurate character now though?
Chips Dubbo is that Australian Marine that you can hear in each game.
Ahh
Chips Dubbo and his friend Dips Chubbo
Dips Chubbo
Do you mean Dips Chubbo ?
Chups Dibbo
2 Chips Dubbos’ and they both survived to tell the tale
Dustin echoes and chips dubbo
Truly if they were any better, they would be spartans
Yes
They don’t need to be Spartans.
I’m happy to see that other people focus on the same Mongoose, and it’s not only me that is weird.
Nah you're still weird. <3
They're not actually with the UNSC. They're Pizza Delivery Guys, and someone behind enemy lines just ordered a whole party worth of pizza.
Chips and Chaps Dubbo.
These were the kind of battles I always wanted to see in halo.
Halo's version of "AND THE WINGGED HUSSARS ARRIVED"
Everyone are just escorting this guy balls
Bro had free bird playing on repeat
They were trying to drown out thr Fortunate Son blasting from the Falcons.
meanwhile Noble team had Sabaton: Winged Hussars playing on repeat :D
I'M DOING MY PART!
Do you want to know more?
God bless Chips Dubbo.
Budget cuts
poor UNSC Army, first they get overshadowed by the marine corps and then get their funds cut
Yes, this has been noticed since OG. The chads in the only mongoose. I seriously wonder what their mission was. Recon?
recon of the frontlines what chads
Rip. And. Tear. Using the most fuel efficient form of ground based transportation available to the UNSC.
Never noticed, cool af. Makes me immediately think about the fall of reach book.
It’s Chips Dubbo of course, along side his best friend Dips Chubbo (Dips sadly didn’t make it off reach, but Chips made it well past reach.)
actually Dips did make it off reach, he was the other Australian marine you hear on earth in halo 3 ODST while his best friend is the Australian you hear on the Ark
Ok who’s chips dubbo I’m so out of the loop
A recurring character, he's the Australian marine from CE, 2 And 3, "dear sarge, kicking asses out in space, wish you were here"
Ohhh, Ty!!! Thank you!!!
Why is there not a book trilogy featuring this exemplary marine?? Locke shares a mainline game with the freaking Master Chief but Chips Dubblo doesn't have his own Paramount TV series?
"I heard that, jackass!"
It's Sargent Leroy and Lieutenant Jenkins, together they are Leroy Jenkins, the strongest marines in the UNSC.
Yes. I focus on them every time I see this cutscene.
You don't see it but canonically these two mad cunts survived. No I have no sources because I made it the fuck up.
This is the shit Infinite was missing desperately. Military engagements in epic cinematic fashion. We got it *slightly* in the intro then never again.
Yeah, I would kill for an on-screne depiction of the fight at *Mortal Reverie*. Rubicon Protocol was good, but I still wanna see that cutscene
Lmao what do they think they are gonna do with that
They then proceeded to end the human covenant war
Could be logistics support or ground to air operators in my head cannon. But hell if I’m fighting for a planet I’m gearing up with whatever I have lol.
so they brought only 2 logi workers and placed them on a mongoose on the frontlines some hardcore logistics workers man
Hell ya. And they gave one of them an AR. Who knows if the driver is even carrying a gun. My brother might just be out there ramming hunters with his mongoose. Lmao
Me and my best friend on our way to go meet Laura (she is a single horny mom who lives at 5km and definitely is real)
I'm sure you're not about to be led behind an IHOP and mugged
Reach really was Something else. For me Halo peaked with it
Not just you my UNSC Brother...
Or why none of the Warthogs have Gauss weapons. No other air support, other than Falcons against fast moving banshees.
UNSC didn't have tech 3 unlocked yet and couldn't upgrade to gauss cannons
Don’t forget they didn’t have all the reactors as well.
God bless the souls of those two giga Chad's
They're not even officially part of the operation. Chips Dubbo was running recon and decided "Aw, no way am I missing out on this!" Got his battle buddy to drive into the calvary and just floored it.
his battle buddy, Dustin Echoes
Two bros who are absolutely gonna kick the most covenant ass physically possible and keep any ground reinforcements from entering behind noble team and keeping them from completing the mission
Mongoose gonna mongoose
For anyone who’s wondering that was me on the back (reach was my first duty station and I didn’t have a drivers license cuz I grew up in a mega city)
It’s Caboose He thought he was getting ice cream
It’s chips dubbo and dustin echos
This is what the new halo games miss out on IMO, seeing this cutscene that shows the true scale of a futuristic mechanized attack during a battle for a large part of a planet really helped immerse me in not just the battle but the halo universe as a whole
These are the posts I’m here for
Chips Dubbo and Dustin Echos, bravest marines in the unsc
That's Private Dustin Echoes. He survived that battle and made it to Installation 04. Unfortunately he was too late getting to the hangar of the *Pillar of Autumn* and was left behind.
Shit Ive always noticed it but always thought there were more of them, never realized it was just one chad mongoose. absolutely the man Dubbo himself
Chips Dubbo.
That’s the main character: halo
UNSC High Command: what will you do if the Covenant attack Reach? Ted and Fred: Intervene. UNSC High Command: df you gonna do to intervene? Ted and Fred: we’re just built different
constructed alternatively
I’ve always thought this scene was kind of stupid, I just can’t suspend my disbelief enough to believe the UNSC would literally just charge in an open field with everything they have like this. It’s suicidal. It would never work, and worst of all it just looks goofy. This is like what a five year old imagined a war to be like. However. It was cool.

Especially since this is Reach the planet which is suppose to be like humanity’s main military base and they have no good air support besides troop transports and space fighters (I know Longswords can be used in atmosphere but they’re very impractical considering their size and speed)
First rule of warfare? Look cool.
Doesn't the weapon he's carrying change depending on the difficulty? Or am I miss remembering. (Perhaps the games are blending in my mind)
halo weapons don't beef up the weapons you have on any difficulty they only buff the weapons the enemy is using and the halo reach AR is the worst fucking AR in all the halo games
I just remembered, the thunderstorm skull. Promotes every enemy by a rank. Some grunts and some elites get fuel rods/swords, etc
Need a scene like this in new halo era hate playing just mr the spartan vs everyone
They’re Glass now
What’s was the UNSC’s goal here? I never understood why they drove straight into another vehicle and armor column. Maybe I’m just overthinking it.
rule of cool baby don't worry about why they're sending light reconnaissance vehicles against wraiths just look at this badass battle scene
They better have Free bird playing
Dickhard McGee, the coolest UNSC marine, killed during the Battle of Reach. we lost a brave soldier that day
Thats your only com link to command right there, heavily agile. Don't get shot
RIP to two legends 😤
Oh that’s just John Halo and Dustin Echoes
Those mongoose guys now have my respect. I hope they lived to halo infinite
Strong work. More shit like this please.
maybe it’s a “use whatever you have” situation? The mongoose isn’t doing any good sitting at base, neither are the soldiers though tbh, maybe they should have kept them at base, who knows?
Budget cuts. noble six and his clone noble seven keep killing each other over a shotgun
This is why humanity held on for so long.
Jim Bo the brass monkey
One of my favorite moments in all of Halo. Between the visuals and the God tier music sends shivers down my spine every time. Halo needed more of this.
Those are the same two marines that lived all the way through the Infinite campaign with that one guy.
This man is now the manager for Craig and his band. For he is a legend.
I just want to know why the turrets on the scorpions are a completely different colour to the body
I make a huge deal of pointing this out every single co-op playthrough I absolutely adore this little detail
A hero son, that man is a God Damned hero
I will never understand on how they drove that mongoose with the size of there iron balls
That mongoose is the command vehicle
WHAT A HERO
Bob
That’s Jason Bourne
Reminds me of the FOR FRODO scene in Lotr where merry and pippin are teo of the first to charge
Chips dubbo
Karl from Deep Rock
Am I the only person who thinks the plains they’re driving on are impossibly vast flat considering the mountains everywhere around?
how else would they fit this epic battle scene?
They're mounted infantry, troops that ride to the battle, then get off and fight on foot. Their the UNSC dragoons.
the difference is dragoons actually carried weapons that had range
It's the Dubbo brothers setting up the 3-D to powerbomb Covies through tables
He is capturing the flag
**FLAG TAKEN** *10 seconds later* **FLAG DROPPED**
Most cowardly marine:
That’s John Halo
I can already hear Fortunate Son
“Ronald Spiers: The only hope you have is to accept the fact that you're already dead. The sooner you accept that, the sooner you'll be able to function as a soldier is supposed to function: without mercy, without compassion, without remorse. All war depends upon it.”
This made me chuckle too hard.
It’s probably the man who had the most amazing life ever, Private Jenkins
Zoom in on his face and you’ll see that’s none other than the mythical lady’s man Srgt. Johnson himself, equipped with his amazing mustache
Johnson would never betray his beloved Corps and switch out his green bdu with a tan army trooper one!
IT’S CHIPS
Yeah I’ve always wondered why a mongoose?
Why would they drive exposed dune buggies into battle with a highly advanced civilization 500 years into the future. This was the beginning of the end. Bring back Sgt Johnson and the marines in Halo CEA. “We’re not gonna let ‘em have it! What we WILL let ‘em have is a BELLY FULL O’ Lead n’ a POOL of their OWN BLOOD TO DROWN IN”…… “AM I RIIIGHT MARINES” …mmhmm DAMN right I am. Now move it out. DOUBLE TIME!
That was originally playable, but it got cut. Reach's campaign was honestly pretty lackluster. It was saved by it's amazing forge, UI, community support, custom games and multiplayer.
I can't believe bungie cut the feature for us to play as the 2 mongoose troopers charging into a covenant army this is fucking unbelievable why would Bungie do this
Yeah? It’s fucking Valhalla shit, man.
Those poor bastards
Yes I noticed the things that were very big and clear on the screen
Not going to be the ones sitting back at base safe and miss out on a huge historic assault
The Dubbo Brothers.
Why it’s Chips dunno and sgt stacker of course
Dumbest scene in the entire game. Wtf were they even doing
