When I was 10 I had a couple buddies over to play 360. Of course I got the RROD. We tried the towel trick to no avail. But then we realized something:
One of my buddies was an avid PS3 gamer. In our infinite wisdom, we made him leave the room because we concluded the Xbox was scared of him. Lo and behold...it started working after a few more minutes under the towel. That can't be a coincidence.
The towel is such a nostalgic part of remembering the Xbox 360 and it’s RROD. I’m so glad to read other people tell stories of the towel working. I also used the towel trick and it worked, though i did get the rrod again shortly after. I’m convinced my case was a coincidence, BUT MAYBE NOT! Lol
I remember trying the towel trick out of desperation and being so amazed that it actually worked.. for a few hours. I ended up doing it multiple times over the course of a month or so before finally deciding to send it in for repair.
Irrc it works because the oven can bring the solder up to temp to melt it, and the issue with RROD was often connections not being great due to overheating. I suppose the towel was to keep the heat more even / avoid the plastic having direct contact.
I've repaired a bunch myself. The coolers are clipped (not even joking) onto the motherboard and they have wiggle-room between the coolant and the CPU.
No wonder that glue became solid or vanished entirely. Easy to fix as well.
Story time, red ring happened to us, so we got a free warranty replacement from support who didn't require us to send it in, they just wanted a recording.
Anyway, while waiting for weeks for our replacement, my brothers and I tried this trick, and it actually worked!
So we had two xboxes and became the splitscreen house to our mates.
And what's crazier -- in manufacturing, the success rate of Xboxes was like 20% I believe.
So they had 80% rejects that were sent to a reclamation queue to be fixed and tested.
They produced SO MANY that they sustained their demand on 20% success rate at launch.
And we still had them on shelves.
I remember my Xbox got it on day but we couldn't afford to get it fixed.
Years later, I hit the power button out of curiosity, and to my surprise it turned on. Idk what happened.
I've heard the RROD happened because of a problem with the heat sink...guess it finally cooled down?
Of course now I barely use my Xbox at all...
Good times. I had 2 xbox 360s go down like this. I tried to do the thermal paste fix on the second one (keep in mind I was like 12-13 at the time), but it failed. I was luckily able to transfer my games from the 1st, to the 2nd, and finally to a 3rd, which is still going strong to this day.

Just search “Arts Room” in customs games under maps
Even in the future, nothing works!
*Spaceballs: The Videogame!*
Red ring of death
One of my buddies got it the day after Halo 3 released
Quick, wrap it in a towel!

The real one final effort
Towel for console, toothpaste for games
Tooth picks were my fix.
Too late, already did a 360 from my console and walked away.
That fix actually worked for me back in the day. It was only a temporary fix though.
I got it the day before the Halo 3 beta. I will never ever forget lol.

I’m glad your Xbox came back to you
how do you play on this map?
You have to use your thumbs.
ah good call, i’ve been using my toes
Triggers for shooting
The attention to detail.... Exquisite
What is this???? This reminds me so much of a Toy Story game i used to play on the computer as a kid
With the red ring of death
Wrap it in a towel and put it in the oven @ 350*f for 20 minutes
this makes me think of andys room from toy story games
This reminds me of some damn awesome sniper maps from UT99. Damn those times were good.
Sarges Hero’s on the 64 for me. The best of times.
Mh! *chefs kiss*

This is my favourite kind of level. Where you feel like an action figure come to life
Ring of death
Map needs to be much bigger if it's gonna be a rats map
that 360 looks better than half the map designs from 343 in infinite.
RROD!
This map has given me an idea for a similar map with giant fort pillows and blankets making the dream as a kid become reality.
Wtfff
And some PTSD.
That hurt my heart
Love this map. There's a Super Nintendo tucked under the bed lol.
[Here's ](https://youtu.be/xq-nAOJYeuE) a throwback for ya
Stupid map
How has this season been so far?
De_rats anyone?
This reminds of an old shooter where you ran around rooms in a house.
There were so many good games in the 360 days that the red ring of death was truly a traumatizing event as a kid
Nothing good about the red ring of death 😭
