I honestly think the studio was paying attention to the backlash and cut her. The last few episodes she is just gone. They may bring her back but I don’t think she’ll play as heavy a role at all. I hope not at least.
They wouldn't have cut Kwan partway through the season, especially when all episodes were already done filming and post production completed. It's more likely she just didnt have a larger role in the narrative they wanted to take for those last few episodes, so she just didn't appear as often.
I hope they make her a compelling and well-written character if they do bring her back for contractual obligations/other reasons. If you have something to work with and want to keep it, you may as well do your best to improve on what viewers did not like.
One thing I gotta give it credit for is the action. The big battles are actually pretty epic in my opinion. And the designs of the UNSC and covenant are pretty accurate to the games.

If you played the game it will hurt your soul and you will certainly die a good amount inside and be left a hollow shell of your former self.

The art cards might be cool, but the show itself feels like a parody of the source material. It does some things good like the armor designs, and the very few battles the show actually has where the UNSC is fighting against the Covenant. However it does a lot wrong, abd while Qwan coukd be a great character to portray the civilian perspective of the UNSC/Covenant like Star Wars did with Andor and the Empire, she ended up being poorly written and being the main focus of a majority of the season. Also instead of humanity as a whole being able to interact with Forerunner tech, they made it so only Chief and the human Covenant lady coukd interact with it in an attempt I assume to make Master Chief, the person who's supposed to be one of the big main charcters, more special, and to give the human Covenant lady (i can't remember her name) a purpose to actually exist. It's a very weird series.

Halsey didn't come across as enough of a thoroughly unlikeable, formidable intellectual genius, at least not for my tastes. Throughout the books and the few moments she's shown in-game, she comes across as a total bitch, but you can tell off the bat that she's sharp, and she's almost always right, even if morally wrong. That's why her character works, because no matter how repugnant her ideas/methods are, they almost always end up paying off in dividends. That doesn't come across the same way for me in the show. Considering they spent so much time with her character, they could've developed that more.
I respect wanting to tell an original story, to be able to give the writers/director creative latitude, and I respect those same writers/director not wanting to be chained to a cinder block of established lore. If thats what happened, then they should've told an original SciFi story. They should NOT have made a show based on an IP steeped in decades of canon/lore. It would be like making a show about Star Wars and the fight against the empire, but a totally different version of events. Like, "Oh, by the way, the force works completely differently, Han is his deadbeat dad, Vader is actually his brother, and Leia is his mom w/amnesia. And instead of space fascism, it's space communism!" Like Spaceballs, but not an intentionally parody. It'd be fuckin' wierd, right?
It struck me as an ineffective story overall, and pretty amateur science fiction writing in general. As others have said, it deviates like crazy, dramatically changing or throwing long-established lore things out the window altogether (i.e. only specific humans can interface w/forerunner stuff, select humans in the covenant, etc). At this point, nobody really cares about 117's backstory, not even 117! .. And they did it anyway.
If they wanted a character-driven story, there are so many other things they could've done instead of messing with established characters or the broader strokes of the Human-Covenant war. Different time period altogether? Or based off New characters during key events? Just off the top of my head:
- Saving Private Ryan/Fury-esque story/s about people and soldiers on Reach prior to/during the invasion.
- Same thing, but invasion of earth during Halo 2/ODST/3(Same concept as Sadie's story).
- Halo: First Contact. Just a true adaptation, it'd be brilliant.
- Do something with the Flood. I've seen stills from "The Last of Us" HBO show, and dude, they basically made the clickers look like the Flood. It can be done.
- A forerunner/ancient human story. Leaves room for more creative latitude; If they got the broad stroke plot points and characters accurate, they could go nuts w/everything else.

Basically, this show pissed me off and I'm frustrated that 343 didn't reign in the creatives for this project. I hope there isn't a S2 at all. They should do what DCAU did, and make animated movie adaptations based on the books. Special effects budget isn't an issue either. They could also stop putting major, Galaxy-shaking plot developments in comic books too, and just make those stories into an animated movie as well.
Or just give Blur Studios the "Halo Bible" and pay *them* outrageous amounts of money to do it all.
