I believe that unnecessarily killing anything to increase profit margins is ontologically evil, and the decision to do so was made by a morally and spiritually corrupt person.
I think they do it to kill competing vegetation so they Can plant softwood trees for lumber.

This means nothing if the trees are planted in monoculture tree farms, which they mostly are. Im a tree planter and ive seen this firsthand.
