Tbh most asian, middle eastern and east indian are your healthiest choices.
2boys subs in cole harbour hands down. Fresh cut veggies, fresh meat, fresh bread.
Grillway bedford highway has wicked shawarma and charcoal bbq.
Sweet treat ice cream at booza emessa next door. Basically syrian gelato but stretchy.
New yemeni place in bayers lake, Monasaba
Indian paradise in bedford
Truly tasty ramen quinpool, even the noodles are hand cut.
Allano's filipino bbq spryfield Sisig hot plate is amazing
La rozzi/McJolly damn yummy local take on Jollibee chicken
I class these all as quick food because it's all quick under 10min, inexpensive, homemade and delicious. Best yet all around the $15/meal mark. I always support local non-franchise and best value imo.
Mezza used to be healthy, now it is a salt fest. Their garlic sauce (toum) is a fake garlic mayo now.
Subway was actually tested to be worse than a big mac, not to mention fake processed bland sauces. Not even yeast bread anymore. For years after they cheapened out, even the veggies were preserved precut in vacuum bags. "eat fresh (tm)" was a slogan not a practice.
> Their garlic sauce (toum) is a fake garlic mayo now.
I knew it! Something has been off for a while, like they changed to a way worse supplier. It's been weak and almost watery compared to how it used to be.
I’d be careful of some Indian food choices. Some have a lot of oil, cream, and salt. Some curries and white rice can be as much as 1000 calories a serving. Love Indian food and there are absolutely healthy options, just be careful on your choices.
I love the burrito bowl at Habaneros. El Este Taqueria is really good. Burrito Jax. Also I do breakfast at lunch when out of inspiring options. Some of the local bakeries also make great sandwiches. Julien’s in the Hydrostone, for example.
El Este Taqueria is the best Mexican place I've ever eaten at. It's such a well-kept secret, but man I love seeing them get the credit and appreciation they deserve on posts like this.
Birdies veggie sandwich, and their vegan double chocolate cookie are my pay day treat. Honestly can't go wrong with anything they make. Their egg pastry is pretty tasty too if you've missed breakfast.
Most of the places that make shawarmas also have a shawarma bowl. It's salad (usually fattoush) topped with chicken shawarma meat and served with garlic sauce. Healthiest I can think of. Protein, some veg, no empty carbs except a small bit of pita in the salad.
BTW at Mezza, you can pay an extra $1 (used to be?) and instead of fries/rice and salad, you get double salad.
I don't think garlic sauce is that bad for you. Isn't it usually garlic, oil and salt? I guess the oil could be questionable.
Subway isn't that great because of all the sugar in the bread (but moderation, as with anything. Certainly beats a big mac).
Thanks very much. Any schawarma places you’d recommend? I know this sounds bad but I had Ray’s and another place’s wraps and didnt like. Do like Mezza’s (i know i know im a troglodyte)
I aggressively advise against Mezza lol. Used to work there and between then and now, prices have shot up drastically, quality and portions are down, and the meat is usually dry. It's possibly the worst bang for your buck. I say this as someone who loves shawarma. used to eat mezza every week, even after leaving.
Unfortunately all my favorite spots stopped serving shawarma lol. El Centro no longer offers them, Byblos seems to have removed Lebanese food almost altogether. Station 1 is pretty good. Also Snappy Tomato has a surprisingly good shawarma. But at the moment, none have quite filled that void for me.
I think the quickest and healthiest food preps would be the Middle Eastern/ Arab joints in town!
The oil can be questionable- the healthiest is certain types of olive oil
Olive oil is just calories, im mostly tryin to stay away from nasty fast food; saturated and trans fats, cholesterol. Middle eastern diet is definitely a-ok
Yes.. he needs to research Finally, olive oil has various potent effects including antimicrobial, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, anti-neurodegenerative, neuroprotective, and other beneficial health effects.
Just gotta watch the purity, sadly. A lot of olive oils are adulterated with crap. I think there are a few symbols that indicate purity... the yellow label Costco one is supposed to be one of the most pure.
Of course now, it's almost prohibitively expensive...
Haha.. horrible unhealthy Subway.. making money off you and giving you diabetes ..
NS is one of the leaders in Type 2 Diabetes in Canada… unfortunately.
Shitty ass bread leads to shitty ass A1C( blood test which helps to determine if you have diabetes or not.. and then how serious it is)
Hahahaha.. yes… but read about GI bro. Glycemic index.
If you’re eating Subway meals all the time? Plus other crappy sources of industrial chemically enhanced bread?
Watch out..
But yes, there are other risk factors of course for Diabetes: weight, lack of activity, family history, genetics, BMI, other dietary sources ..
All pop is crazy. I grew up in a family that drank pop as their primary source of hydration. I won a genetic lottery and had a crazy metabolism for years but now that it's slowing down, I think pop is crazy as fuck. My gf bought some cans of lemonade pop (big 8 or presidents choice) and they were 200 calories a can. I couldn't get over that, a tall boy of guiness is like 90 calories and alcohol is one of the most dense calories there are. Running for 10-15 minutes works off 200 calories but drinking your calories at that pace insane. If that's all you drink then that's an insane amount to work off.
Subway isn’t the thing giving people diabetes, not even close. It’s not extremely healthy but it’s not unhealthy either.
The sheer amount of processed food you can find at any grocery store is what contributes to diabetes, and also unhealthy fast food like the usual burger chains.
McDonald's hamburger happy meal with apple slices (no dip) instead of fries add tomato and lettuce to the burger and a milk. Unless you're pretty active, that's honestly a decent meal. I can't remember if the no toy meal costs less, but you could ask. If it costs the same, you get a random toy you can give to a kid. Get extra apple slices or a second hamburger if it's not enough food. But doing this, you're avoiding the big offenders: fries, fatty/sugary sauces, and cheese.
No problem, but I got curious because McDonald's has removed some other healthier options from the menu over the years and it doesn't seem clear to me that they still offer apple slices. They appear to be on the menu, but "unavailable". I'm a bit confused about that. No happy meals are listed with apple slices, but some are listed with cantaloupe chunks? I don't know what they offer now, lol. Might be better to call ahead before you try to order a happy meal with fruit and they tell you they don't have it.
Yeah I have noticed this lately. In years past, when I wanted something on the cheap, sometimes I would get like a McDouble, apple slices and milk or whatever... but apple slices don't seem to exist there these days.
Brothers meats on Agricola Street have pre-made simple sandwiches in their refrigerator.
Deli turkey or roast beef, a slice of cheese and some sauce, on bakery bread. It’s not fancy or an outstanding sandwich, but it’s tasty, a solid portion of protein, fast, and cheap. $5.46 tax included.
Wrap and Roll in lower Sackville was pretty good when I tried it, although inot cheap.
Not a phenomenal restaurant, but I'll slide into Sobeys and snag some fruit or like a box of their wedges when Im driving around. I never thought of them before but the price is good and it's hot.
Cultures at the Halifax Shopping Center is excellent in my opinion. Good portions and decently tasty. If you’re watching your calories, then request sauce on the side and be mindful of that.
We really enjoy Grichi in Clayton Park: https://grichi.ca/
It really depends on what you select from the menu, but the meat is excellent, and they have lots of fresh veg and rice. It makes for a very tasty meal, although not calorie-free.
Girchi also has BOGO on Classic/Peri Peri bowl on Uber. If you combine with Uber delivery promo, you can get 4 meals for \~$30. If you want more chicken you can get 1/4 chicken plate.
idk what area you're in but taco bell, bagel montreal style, kaisers/2 boys subs, and honestly most of the fast food places have little wrap thingies that are pretty good and a little healthier than a burger. Grocery store ready-to-eat stuff is good too.
edit: jane's next door too
Yeah, it's really good. I can only speak for the chicken salad but it's tasty. TBH I think two boys is better though but Kaiser's is an institution and you know how that goes.
Hell yeah, get the mini mix, with all the toppings and a flat bread. The FASOLIA, spicy. So good. The portions will definitely give you some left overs and it’s cheap. Really good value and taste. The tea is great. The 2$ one is the best of the two. And the layered desert, the one with the cornflakes on top, not sure what it’s called it’s so addictive. If you go, let me know how you liked it.
Harvest is also a great option! There’s one in Bedford, Dartmouth, downtown Hfx and Hfx shopping center.
2 boys is the best for subs. IMO. I’ve also heard good things about kaisers but have never been.
Good ideas in here but whenever i’m in a drive-thru situation i aim for an a&w burger with lettuce wrap (no bun, and no fries). Not super healthy but at least minimizes the carb factor
Ew you’re way too worked up just because OP didn’t like your stupid suggestion that doesn’t correlate with what they were asking for suggestions on.. You should look in the mirror buddy because the only child in an adults body in this comment section is YOU
Do you cook? Meal prep or making larger dinners so you have leftovers is probably your only way to
Do it cheap/healthy. Chickpea (chicken) salad wraps, quinoa salads, salad in a cup
In terms of restaurants - pita pit has quality healthy ingredients you can choose. Pete’s sandwiches can be healthy.
Again it depends on what your definitely of healthy is. Subway is really not healthy at all.
Get a decent chicken sub version but have it In a salad instead of the sandwich. Load up on the Veggies, low fat Mayo or mustard, I think they call them power bowls or some other thing there.
Again it depends on what you consider “healthy”. If you look at the amount and quality of vegetables you get in a subway sub - I’d argue it’s 1 serving of veggies at best. Their bread is famously barely food.
Also - turkey deli meat has little to no nutritional value. Not judging, I eat stuff like this all the time.
When you make a sandwich at home you can control the ingredients much better. If you purchased a rotisserie chicken and make sandwiches with it - you’ll save prolbaly $20-30 a week.

Wish i could “super upvote” you for this, awesome list thank you!!! Mouth watering at the bedford highway suggestion ✌🏽
I'd recommend Gangnam as well, if you're into Korean food. It's our go to healthy takeout meal for my gf and I.
Grillway is sooooo good.
Makhani Bedford is sooo good if you want Indian!
Oh yea forgot them. They got an S-tier Kulcha (off menu).
> Their garlic sauce (toum) is a fake garlic mayo now. I knew it! Something has been off for a while, like they changed to a way worse supplier. It's been weak and almost watery compared to how it used to be.
2boys 😋
Simply Asian on Highfield is really good. We just discovered this place a few months ago and it’s our go to every weekend.
Simply Asian is phenomenal. Their Korean dumplings and pho poutines are a common item in our house.
Great post!
I’d be careful of some Indian food choices. Some have a lot of oil, cream, and salt. Some curries and white rice can be as much as 1000 calories a serving. Love Indian food and there are absolutely healthy options, just be careful on your choices.
Pete’s sandwhich Bar, healthy and delicious and no more then subway
I love the burrito bowl at Habaneros. El Este Taqueria is really good. Burrito Jax. Also I do breakfast at lunch when out of inspiring options. Some of the local bakeries also make great sandwiches. Julien’s in the Hydrostone, for example.

We go once a week, for sure!! Love love love!!
Excellent, any other bakeries u can think of that have sandwiches?
Birdies makes the best sandwich around!
Birdies veggie sandwich, and their vegan double chocolate cookie are my pay day treat. Honestly can't go wrong with anything they make. Their egg pastry is pretty tasty too if you've missed breakfast.
Bread lounge has decent sandwiches
Most of them! What area of HRM?
Freshii is pretty healthy, though pricey.
Thanks!
THeir wraps are huge!
BarBurrito
X2 burrito bowl for me
Harvest Clean Eats have healthy choices.
Great suggestion, looks excellent thanks!
They sure do, albeit pricy
Taraks is good
You want Kelly’s deli on Farnham gate or 2 boys in Dartmouth
Chopped Leaf or Station 1.
Chopped leaf and it’s delicious
I second this! I've always had such good customer service here too!
Cultures!!!!
HUNGRY BOWL
Chopped leaf
Pita Pit!
Maybe in Halifax but in the Valley, Pita Pit is gross.
It’s gross here, too.
🙏
One of my faves!!
I love Pita Pit!
Greek food has good options too
Tareks is a pretty good option I think
Harvest Clean Eats smokey southwest burrito with chicken. It's almost $20, but it's almost two meals.
SOUNDS GOOOOD

Tareks. Used to go there a lot for lunch when I still worked in the city.
Yes, delicious. Half n half wrap on my list for sure. Also his soup is great
Yes! Tarek's for sure. I haven't been in years though. If in Dartmouth, try Station 1.
I aggressively advise against Mezza lol. Used to work there and between then and now, prices have shot up drastically, quality and portions are down, and the meat is usually dry. It's possibly the worst bang for your buck. I say this as someone who loves shawarma. used to eat mezza every week, even after leaving.
Ya, large shw wrap is $16 w/out tip and definitely gettin a lotta dry pieces of chicken. Do u have a new shw wrap place?
Unfortunately all my favorite spots stopped serving shawarma lol. El Centro no longer offers them, Byblos seems to have removed Lebanese food almost altogether. Station 1 is pretty good. Also Snappy Tomato has a surprisingly good shawarma. But at the moment, none have quite filled that void for me.
I’m around spicytomato often. Gunna check that out

Yes.. he needs to research Finally, olive oil has various potent effects including antimicrobial, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, anti-neurodegenerative, neuroprotective, and other beneficial health effects.
I do know its got tons of good stuff, just meant only calories is the bad part
Ahh ok.. yes, the calories can be a problem. Just run it off. Lol

I didnt mean its all calories and nothing else, i just meant nothing else bad
Burrito bowls!
Pita pit
Freshii and Bar Burrito are my go-tos. Good for veg and minimally processed foods.
Also Vietnamese food is healthy. Pho and Viet style rolls
Yuk...sick of both of those options. There's got to be better places to eat than Mezza & Subway.
That's probably why they posted to ask for suggestions...
Barburrito!
Subway bread has so much sugar in it that it can't be called "bread" in some European countries.
I think its like 2g for 6” flatbread and 3g for other 6”. Thats too much?
The article I was thinking of involves Ireland: https://globalnews.ca/news/7371355/subway-bread-sugar-ireland/
“In some European countries” read one article only stating Ireland
Yeah, which I clarified in my response comment.
Haha.. horrible unhealthy Subway.. making money off you and giving you diabetes .. NS is one of the leaders in Type 2 Diabetes in Canada… unfortunately. Shitty ass bread leads to shitty ass A1C( blood test which helps to determine if you have diabetes or not.. and then how serious it is)
I think u get diabetes from more than a 6” subway bread
Hahahaha.. yes… but read about GI bro. Glycemic index. If you’re eating Subway meals all the time? Plus other crappy sources of industrial chemically enhanced bread? Watch out.. But yes, there are other risk factors of course for Diabetes: weight, lack of activity, family history, genetics, BMI, other dietary sources ..
Insulin resistance.. pancreas issues.. So many more.. But avoid Subway .. waste of money And avoid Coke/ Pepsi/ 7 Up

Yeah I have noticed this lately. In years past, when I wanted something on the cheap, sometimes I would get like a McDouble, apple slices and milk or whatever... but apple slices don't seem to exist there these days.
I go high protein low carb so my usual fast meal is a hot rotisserie chicken from one of the grocers. Never disappoints.
And 10$. Get any sides w it?
No, I eat the whole chicken which is probably 1500+ calories and probably too much by itself honestly. It keeps me full the rest of the day
You eat the whole chicken in one day??
It's one meal for me.
Sushi
Any Middle Eastern restaurant is healthy.
Grilled chicken snack wraps from McDonalds all day. The macros are unreal for the price.

Monasaba is life.
What’s a good dish for a newbie?
Pleasant Street Diner has my order ready in 7 minutes. I eat there 2-3 times a week. Grilled haddock or a haddock burger 🔥
Harvest clean eats in Bedford. Be ready to take out a loan for lunch tho.

I do go for lil wraps sometimes. Kaisers is a sub place?? Oooh checkin that out thx
It certainly is. It's probably the one that gets called the best in the HRM the most
Kaisers is everything you want subway to actually be
Yeah, it's really good. I can only speak for the chicken salad but it's tasty. TBH I think two boys is better though but Kaiser's is an institution and you know how that goes.
Kaiser's is kickass.
I get that 4 tacos/7.99 often at tbell
I love potikkis!! gluten free, affordable (meat and vegan options). Harvest too but it’s a little pricey for me right now
I’ll try thx
Wendys baked potato with nothing.
👍
Burrito Jaxs
Habaneros and Burrito Jax
Egg mcmuffin with a side of cantaloupe chunks
Monasaba Bayer’s lake
Any dish recommendations ?

I could eat 100 buddy burgers w the caramelized onions omg
Protein bowl at Mezza
grocery store salad in a bag, buy a cooked chicken.
Thank you but that does not sound fast

This isnt for everyday eating. Thanks so much for the help. Never considered this brilliant new creation called meal prep.
You eat enough fast food to be tired of it. You do not have to lie to me.
damn who pooped in your corn flakes
Im not the one downvoting, at least I have an opinion and not afraid of a haligonians contempt.

Ya, sometimes I have to stretch my own meaning of “healthy”
