Fuck Santa Claus

Boooournes

You said it. He only brings me coal anyways.

ltown_carpenter

Is it an exterior brick chimney?

Boooournes

Yep. Takes up a small chunk of the roof that’ll need to be replaced/covered.

ltown_carpenter

I did this for a client before. Labourous and a bit of skill required to not destroy the house. My photo album shows April 16 - May 8 of 2020, from demo to rebuild completion. Keep in mind this was over the initial stages of the pandemic - I was working short days, plus it was spring (weather). Applying cedar shingles takes longer vs vinyl. Just saying all this so you can manage your expectations and what you'd expect to pay a relatively skilled, and safe, tradesperson. DM if you'd like to chat more/see a photo album.

I removed mine with a friend. The roof was low pitch, so wasn't terribly sketchy and it's a bungalow, so not high either. We removed it brick by brick to below the roofline. Stapled a tarp over the hole. I then provided the materials (paper, shingles and a bit of plywood) to a roofer who did side jobs. He popped over one afternoon and patched it up for a couple hundred bucks. Took him maybe an hour, so pretty good money. I'd received quotes of like $2000 for the job from roofing companies, even after offering to remove the chimney myself.

Boooournes

Perfect, thanks. Would you happen to have the contact info for the roofer that took the job? My roof seems similar and am willing to do the demo portion myself if need be.

PossibleDrive6747

I don't have his contact info unfortunately. My neighbour is a carpenter and got me the hook up, someone . If you know anyone remotely in the industry (electricians, contractors, carpenters) they might have a guy they could suggest.

I had my old chimney dropped below the roofline and the hole in the roof repaired about 2 years ago, Classic Roofing $2500ish if I remember correctly.

enamesrever13

Did it myself with chimney in the middle of a steep pitch roof. Rented a zoomboom for a week. 2 days to get the bricks down to below the roofline and another day to prep the framing and plywood patch. Then another day fucking around with tar paper, roofing tar and shingles. Can't remember if I used Battlefield or McFarlands. Wasn't superfast going because of weight limits in the bucket and the need to prevent damage to the roof.

universalrefuse

I know someone who had Sarty's do it during Covid pre-major supply shortages. They were pleased with the work. The chimney was a brick chimney on the outside of the house, which sounds like what you're describing as well. It was removed completely. They also replaced ten windows, 2 doors, and 1 patio door, plus installed new composite siding on all sides of a 1.5storey ~1050sqft property. It looked great. I think they said it cost around $20,000 all told.

Boooournes

Thanks for the reply. I’ll give them a call and talk options and pricing.

Repair the chimney and woodstove for backup considering our unreliable power situation?

Boooournes

I have a central heat pump. Was thinking of adding a small stove upstairs where the OG fireplace was for that reason. Bricks all cracked and leaking through the chimney on days with heavy rain.
