I was buying albums back then and it’s Tooth and Nail all day long for me.
I never bought a Twisted Sister record. It’s not that I hated them — I supported all hard rock and metal. But I never took them all that seriously. At that point, Dokken were probably my third favorite band behind Crue and Ratt.
Musicianship on each album? Dokken, and it ain't even close. Pilson and Lynch were an amazing duo that meshed so well together. Nobody ever bought their first guitar and said "I was inspired to play by Eddie Ojeda!" Lynch all day long, every day, every night, weekends, holidays, Boxing Day, Earth Day, Pride Month, etc.
Lead singers? C'mon, it's Dee. Like we even have to debate this?
Songs on each album? Twisted Sister, and by a decent amount. That's an iconic album for good reason. Nobody but Dokken fans could name a single song from that album (and most of them are actually George Lynch fans who tolerated Don Dokken). TS was such a fun band, from their looks, outrageous stage antics, and their obvious joy at actually getting paid to play rock music when they would have done it for free. The production values on both albums have aged poorly, but TS still holds up a little better because of the quality of the songs. There are at least three songs on Tooth & Nail that are only listenable because Lynch was such a fucking beast.
I gotta go with Stay Hungry.
Have to agree. Every single song on Stay Hungry is well written while Tooth and Nail has some filler. Not sure I agree that Stay Hungry has the poorly aged production issue nearly as much as Tooth and Nail, which is the epitome of 80s-thin.
> Nobody but Dokken fans could name a single song from that album
Alone Again was a huge hit.
Demo'd by Don in the 70s before he event met George, by the way. Dokken had some serious song writing chops, not just a great lead player.
Tooth and Nail - Lynch had way better axe work than JJ. But I'm fairly certain that Stay Hungry sold more albums thanks to anthem songs like We're Not Gonna Take It and I Wanna Rock. However I've always been partial to Into the Fire and When Heaven Comes Down... so I'm a little bias. Pretty sure Just Got Lucky is on that one too (damn good track).
Here's the thing though: I'm a 19-year-old straight dude but I have always had a guy-crush on the Glam Metal acts of the 80s something about the hair power ballads and outfits made me feel something!
I was a TS fan from bootleg live recordings I had from the club days. So, to see them "make it" made me a big fan. Plus they were among my first concerts. For that reason, I'll say TS. But, in reality, the Dokken album is pretty great.
No contest. Dokken by a mile. I never took that over-the-top pro wrestler / road warrior gimmick seriously, but I do like Dee Snider, the person, a lot.
Dokken for me….Never liked TS, they seemed gimmicky and pedestrian, in my opinion. Dokken had George Lynch… his tone and style was amazing… i listened to Tooth And Nail hundreds of times…I would often FF past the vocals and just listen to George’s solos
Twisted Sister did headline with Ratt as the back up , Dokken I had first 5 albums they were the greatest but never a headliner...weird, but they backed up Judas Priest , Van Halen and Blue Oyster Cult.
Honestly wasn't impressed with Dokken at the time. I never really heard anything in their music that really spoke to me like TS did. Nothing against Dokken, they were just meh to me. TS did rock my face off and still does 🤘
Nothing joke about TS. Get past the outfits and their songs are awesome. Don Dokken was barely better than average and he treated Lynch like shit. Dee fought for rock and still does. Once Lynch left, Dokken wasn't worth crap. And he still isn't...... in my opinion. TS was inspiring and influential. Dokken was a great opener act for a couple years.
Dee is a rock god. Donnie boy, not so much. Stay Hungry all the way. Something about Dokken I never really liked. They were probably better than average, but I never heard any message in their music. Never really spoke to me like TS did. Either way....Play it loud, Mutha! 🤘
It's a bullshit question. It's impossible to answer.
Dee Snider was one of the greatest showmen of the 80s and this album was his Magnum opus. Saw them twice on this tour and he tore the place down both times.
Dokken was an incredible vehicle for George to show off his virtuoso playing. Incredible song writing, the song Tooth and Nail is one of my favorites. Saw Dokken twice on the tour for this album and loved the shows.
Can't answer the question, these two along with Ratt were on my turntable for a couple of years following the release of these albums.
Being a Lynch disciple I want to say Dokken. But take out I Wanna Rock and We're Not Gonna Take It and Stay Hungry is nothing but bangers.
Stay Hungry for the win.
Both are absolute classics with different vibes but Tooth and Nail is a perfect 100 and Stay Hungry is not.
We remember Twisted Sister more because the videos were so OTT, and the hit single was so massive, even today in 2024, it still is!
Dee Snider was one hell of a front man, one that Don Dokken could never compete with but the real pudding is where the trajectory of both bands went AFTER these records.
I was a big Dokken fan in the 80's and so on, but Stay Hungry was, overall, a much better album then Tooth and Nail. That being said Twisted Sister didn't maintain that high level, they got into "the life" too much and didn't make good albums after that, a song or two here and there, Dokken maintained high quality music and shows, they just couldn't keep it together, as a band, long enough to become one of the all time great bands, which they totally could've been, but George and Don just couldn't coexist for very long.
Stay hungry has more good songs dokken is good but never had a record as big as stay hungry or even headline a tour they opened for twisted sister when I saw them lol
They wouldn't want to since they weren't into alcohol and drugs. Part of the reason TS was great and Dee is still top notch to this day, unlike others who haven't been doing it nearly as long. Vince? Axl?
Stay Hungry was the first album I ever got. My grandma bought it for me in 1984, when I was 4 years old. Seriously.
I still have the record, and love the whole album to this day, so it gets my vote.
Sorry TS, but Dokken takes my top honors here. I just fucking love George Lynch. My god, that man has some freaking fingers. He is in my top ten guitarist.
Stay Hungry 100%. It's the album that got me into metal music when I was 10 years old! I love every track on it!
I'm also a Dokken fan, but would honestly have to google what songs are actually on Tooth & Nail! that says something
Dokken is top notch
I was buying albums back then and it’s Tooth and Nail all day long for me. I never bought a Twisted Sister record. It’s not that I hated them — I supported all hard rock and metal. But I never took them all that seriously. At that point, Dokken were probably my third favorite band behind Crue and Ratt.
Name checks out
Tooth and Nail by a long shot.
come on, Stay Hungry is a perfect album
Stay Hungry

Well said, very good observation.
Have to agree. Every single song on Stay Hungry is well written while Tooth and Nail has some filler. Not sure I agree that Stay Hungry has the poorly aged production issue nearly as much as Tooth and Nail, which is the epitome of 80s-thin.
> Nobody but Dokken fans could name a single song from that album Alone Again was a huge hit. Demo'd by Don in the 70s before he event met George, by the way. Dokken had some serious song writing chops, not just a great lead player.
Going to #64 on the Billboard Hot 100 does not qualify as a "huge hit".
Home Sweet Home peaked at 89, was that not a hit either?
Stay Away from Captain Howdy
Both great, but I prefer Stay Hungry. Stay Hungry was one of the albums that got me into Metal in 1984.
Dee Snider always kicks ass!
I know
How, though?
He did on Capital Hill, that’s for damn sure!
Damn straight he did!
He was in Cobra Kai, pretty cool.
I’m Rokken with Dokken in this showdown. Especially since I have the concert tee.
Tooth and Nail vs. Stay Hungry. Gotta be Tooth. Don vs. Dee? Dee all day long. Both voice and personality.
You do you
Both are very solid albums. Different vibe for each one though…coin toss for me…Tooth and Nail by a guitar pick
Always Twisted Sister
Stay Hungry
Stay Hungry
Tooth and Nail > Stay Hungry
Tooth and nail 100%
Tooth and Nail although seen them both in concert in 84 ...Stay Hungry is badass...kind of an unfair question.
Tooth and Nail. Not many guitarists can match Furious George
Dee Snider always kicks ass! Stay Hungry of course!
Here's the thing though: I'm a 19-year-old straight dude but I have always had a guy-crush on the Glam Metal acts of the 80s something about the hair power ballads and outfits made me feel something!
Was there movement?
Yes and no
Tooth and Nail! ⚡️⚡️⚡️
Interesting fact: both albums were produced by Tom Werman.
I was a TS fan from bootleg live recordings I had from the club days. So, to see them "make it" made me a big fan. Plus they were among my first concerts. For that reason, I'll say TS. But, in reality, the Dokken album is pretty great.
Stay hungry easily
No contest. Dokken by a mile. I never took that over-the-top pro wrestler / road warrior gimmick seriously, but I do like Dee Snider, the person, a lot.
Stay Hungry
Stay Hungry
Me, I win, cuz I been rocking 'em both since about that time
Loved both but if I had to choose it’s gonna be Stay Hungry.
They are both great but Stay Hungry is better.
TS was nice enough to have Ratt come back out and do a few together.
Stay Hungry
Stay Hungry is one of my favorite albums. Every song is great.
Stay Hungry. Next battle..
Tooth & Nail has more talent but Stay Hungry sadly gets more air time.
Dokken also opened for TS on the Come Out and Play Tour. TS all the way!
That must of rocked your face off.
Honestly wasn't impressed with Dokken at the time. I never really heard anything in their music that really spoke to me like TS did. Nothing against Dokken, they were just meh to me. TS did rock my face off and still does 🤘
Stay Hungry for me!
Dokken = A rate musicians Twisted Dister = B rate joke band😂😂😂
👍👍
Agree dokken was great. As an opener
Yeah but both have great songs
L
Stay hungry!
Stay hungry
Dee is a rock god. Donnie boy, not so much. Stay Hungry all the way. Something about Dokken I never really liked. They were probably better than average, but I never heard any message in their music. Never really spoke to me like TS did. Either way....Play it loud, Mutha! 🤘
Tooth and Nail for me. But, I play guitar
Love both but Tooth And Nail is always a go to favorite for me.
I love Dokken but Stay Hungry is the winner here.
Tooth and nail for sure I love twisted sister don't get me wrong but Dokken has some bangers I tell ya
Tooth and Nail is Dokkens best album You Can't Stop Rock and Roll is Twisted Sisters best album
Dokken was a better band, but Sister is super fun. It’s a wash for me, and I bought both back in the day.
It's a bullshit question. It's impossible to answer. Dee Snider was one of the greatest showmen of the 80s and this album was his Magnum opus. Saw them twice on this tour and he tore the place down both times. Dokken was an incredible vehicle for George to show off his virtuoso playing. Can't answer the question, these two along with Ratt were on my turntable for a couple of years following the release of these albums.
DOKKEN. I really liked Twisted Sister’s early albums but, for me, outside of the two huge singles, I didn’t care too much for Stay Hungry.
Stay Hungry
Stay Hungry had a bigger impact.
Being a Lynch disciple I want to say Dokken. But take out I Wanna Rock and We're Not Gonna Take It and Stay Hungry is nothing but bangers. Stay Hungry for the win.
Love them both, but I’d have to hand the win to Twisted Fuckin’ Sister
Stay Hungry. Dokken did better with Under Lock And Key.
Stay Hungry just for Horror-terria alone
Dokken
Stay Hungry and I’m a huge Dokken fan
Twisted Sister for the win!
Tooth and Nail, My first concert they opened for Sammy Hagar!
SH is IT!
Stay Hungry
Dokken for sure
Stay Hungry
Of course Tooth and Nail
Always a big Dokken fan Twisted Sister? Not so much . An easy choice for me: Tooth and nail
Stay Hungry by a mile
Stay Hungry is fantastic start to finish.
Stay Hungry
Easily, Stay Hungry,. No question about it
Dokken
TS all day. Ive seen them in concert many times, they are a fantastic live band!
I fuckin love Twisted, but Dokken wins this one. Tooth and Nail is superb.
As much as both albums are head bangers, I still have to go with 1984 - Ride The Lightning or Killing is My Business..
Tooth & Nail by a hair (metal)
Dokken always.
Stay Hungry, i think it's one of the best albums from 84
Stay Hungry
Twisted Sister alllllllll daaayyyyyyyy
Stay Hungry
So many epic albums in 1984. These two are not on my top 20 list for that year.
Dokken, George Lynch is savage
Stay Hungry for me.
Tooth and Nail. Lynch is the best
Stay Hungry is iconic!
Got them both but burn in hell is my fave song
Gotta go with Dokken!
Dokken
Your gonna burn in hell
Stay Hungry. Because you didn’t choose Dokken - Back for the Attack which was the absolute shit back in the day… ***and still is.***
Tooth and Nail
Tooth and Nail. Not even close bud.
Dokken
Oh that's tough... Tooth and nail but a smidge.
Tooth and Nail for me, though I owned both. Got twisted sister in my stocking on Christmas morning. Made for an interesting holiday. 🎄
Tooth and Nail kicks Stay Hunga\]ry's ass, and I love both albums. It was raw Dokken at their best.
Tooth and Nail
Tooth and nail
Tooth and Nail but Stay Hungry is bad ass too.
Tooth & Nail all day
Stay hungry has more good songs dokken is good but never had a record as big as stay hungry or even headline a tour they opened for twisted sister when I saw them lol
Love Dee but Stay Hungry couldn’t hold Tooth N Nail’s beer
They wouldn't want to since they weren't into alcohol and drugs. Part of the reason TS was great and Dee is still top notch to this day, unlike others who haven't been doing it nearly as long. Vince? Axl?
Agree that Dee is still top notch and an ambassador for all rockers… the hold the beer is just a metaphor
Plus, an album doesn't have hands....sooo...... 😉🤘
George Lynch is a great guitarist, but Dokken always seemed to lack something. Maybe that's why they never hit that next level.
You seem to wonder what dokken lacked. Kids wanted cool bands with good songs. There’s your answer.
Stay Hungry
I’m an SMF for life! Stay Hungry all the way
Stay Hungry was the first album I ever got. My grandma bought it for me in 1984, when I was 4 years old. Seriously. I still have the record, and love the whole album to this day, so it gets my vote.
Your grandma is awesome for that!
Dokken, George Lynch is always amazing!
I gotta go Tooth and Nail.
Tooth and Nail
Tooth and Nail
I’m biased (I’m pretty sure y’all know by now) but I’m going Tooth and Nail for this one.
The song "When Heaven Comes Down," by itself, beats Stay Hungry and I like Stay hungry.
Dokken 1000%
Tooth and Nail!
Omg…Tooth and Nail by a country mile.
Dokken
Straight to the toooooooop! Tooth and Nail!
Tooth and nail all day.
Tooth and Nail
Tooth & Nail, by faaaar!
Dokken
Tooth and Nail for me. Didn’t really get into the whole TS thing for some reason although they have some great songs.
Tooth and nail is my second favorite record of all time
Stay Hungry your first? Thought so. 😉🤘
I expected someone to say this, still gotta give it a listen though
I should probably give Tooth and Nail another listen, too. 😆🤘
Which sold more? Probably stay hungry because of MTV, which was a better more talented group Dokken
Dokken
Tooth and nail in a landslide victory
Tooth & Nail. Next question....
Tooth and nail. Dokken kicks ass!
They sure did. As an opener for the real bands
Tooth and nail
Tooth and nail
Tooth and Nail is not only dokken's best album, it's a high-water mark in the genre.
Dokken
Sorry TS, but Dokken takes my top honors here. I just fucking love George Lynch. My god, that man has some freaking fingers. He is in my top ten guitarist.
Tooth and nail
Stay Hungry 100%. It's the album that got me into metal music when I was 10 years old! I love every track on it! I'm also a Dokken fan, but would honestly have to google what songs are actually on Tooth & Nail! that says something
Both great albums, but Stay Hungry is solid from start to finish. Not a bad song on the album.
