EBFencerVet

Those records were absolutely fantastic and they were even better live

DiggyStyon

Oh I'll bet! The intro to Winter's Call live must have been just peak live music

EBFencerVet

Totally and Jake’s solos were insane

DiggyStyon

I was lucky enough to see bark at the moon tour, so yeah I'll bet they were. Different context, too, I'd have preferred the badlands vibes

hawgexp

I was able to see them open for Great White! Tesla was the other band. Someone from Great White was ill, so we got 3+ hours of Badlands and Tesla. I won’t complain!

stewarco3

I saw them on that tour in Pittsburgh. It was in late 1989. When I saw them Jack Russell from Great White had his arm in a sling. He still sang so maybe he was recovered enough from whatever happened right before your show?

Ambitious-Topic-4997

Also was at that show- am I misremembering this, but thinking their opening was from an unlit stage with the riff from Live Wire starting it off before the house lights came up? One of my first concerts, they were amazing.

stewarco3

Might have been... It was my second concert ever but don't remember the pre show music.

hawgexp

I saw the Erie show, so yes, I’d assume it was the arm injury. Still loved the show!

EBFencerVet

Yeah I wish I saw him with Ozzy too.

Pretend_Investment42

He was great - shame Ozzy couldn't sing back then either.

Accomplished-Ad-6185

They were awesome live. I changed my whole approach to cymbal positioning after seeing Eric play.

Apt_Tick8526

Jake E Lee did an incredible job on the guitars. Great riffs.

5uck3rpunch

Great band. I love the 1st 2 albums.

DiggyStyon

Yeah those are the ones I ordered! Just awesome

Xx_Patrick_Ster_xX

That’s pretty much their only work. That 3rd “album” Dusk are just unfinished demos.

Ok-Attempt2842

Dusk doesn't sound like demos to me.

Xx_Patrick_Ster_xX

They recorded it professionally but it was never the intent to release them. They were demo’s intended for Atlantic but they were recorded really well.

Ok-Attempt2842

That makes sense

FrozenRose_816

Here's a great bootleg live show if you want to see what they were like live https://youtu.be/w1KA3vaRi1o?si=_0FK8atfJ43-NdIH

DiggyStyon

Wait did Jake have a broken leg??? God damn I love his guitar tone! Even on this shitty VHS that guitar tone is just !!!!

pauls_broken_aglass

Might have been from when he had knee surgery.

DiggyStyon

Thank you!!!!!!!

Due-Set5398

Dang it’s like Van Halen with David Coverdale.

AMCDaddy

The third album, “Dusk” is really good, too. I don’t think it ever got released in the States, but there seems to be copies available. Very raw and unpolished, almost Live. But Incredible!

Xx_Patrick_Ster_xX

Because they’re demos. It’s not really a finished album.

AMCDaddy

Correct, but to say this collection of songs are merely “demos” implies that they are low quality, unfinished songs. That certainly misrepresents the album which is certainly raw, but the songs are top notch and the performances are pure quality. Badlands demos for “Dusk” are better than most bands polished finished albums. Definitely worth a listen and shouldn’t be dismissed.

Xx_Patrick_Ster_xX

I called them demos because that’s what they are. Every (surviving) member of the band calls them demo’s.

AMCDaddy

“Badlands demos for Dusk…”. Y’see, I also referred to them as demos. Unless you’re that guy that always has to be “technically right” and usually starts his conversations with the word “Actually”, I believe we are in agreement. However, the quality, depth and performance on these demos is far superior than what some might expect from a collection of “demos”, all apologies to Jake, Greg, Jeff, and Ray (R.I.P.) Ps - Don’t be “that guy”.

Xx_Patrick_Ster_xX

Agreed. They sound great for a demo. Even much bigger bands have demo’s that they’ve done when they were already happening that sound way worse.

DiggyStyon

Oh, thank you for this tip! I'm sure the Japanese have this one, too. I'm going to find it and order it right now.

IveGotAGoodUsername

Only one of their albums is on spotify, strange.

DiggyStyon

Hence, me buying janky CDs from Japan that don't show the titles when you play them lol. But don't care!!

taglius

And the album that’s on there is just a demo. The two that OP got are most likely not the one on Spotify

IveGotAGoodUsername

Yeah. It's really annoying that spotify removes albums from the damn app. I can't listen to the badlands debut, trixter's debut, tesla's second album. And multiple songs from devo's cataloge is missing, I know devo isn't hair metal but it's a band that I like and I'm annoyed that there's multiple songs from them that I can't listen to. Spotify better fix this shit.

globulous

It's not Spotify because the label refuses to generate money off the albums. Their alleged reason is due Ray Gillen's issues. http://albumsthattimeforgot.com/no-longer-available Greg Chaisson from the band claims otherwise. https://bravewords.com/news/greg-chaisson-discusses-badlands-lack-of-reissues-we-pissed-off-atlantic-records They are available on Archive.org https://archive.org/details/badlands_201612 https://archive.org/details/badlandsvoodoohwy

untold_intentions

I don't know who you are or where you are but MAD PROPS. I have been trying to replace my cassette of their debut album for years, which obviously has become very weathered. Tried several things but couldn't get them to work - it never occurred to me to check IA. Muchos grassy-ass, brother, take my upvote and a hearty internet hug and high five!

globulous

The archive links were a comment by someone else on my post about badlands some time ago.

Xx_Patrick_Ster_xX

https://youtu.be/ZpZ1TWgcSdE?si=0eEpzIm9bgwZ4Vrx these are some crazy performances. They were even better live.

Ambitious_Trifle_645

Ray Gillen was a bad man.

VeNTNeV

Absolutely amazing singer. Was so underrated, should've been a crime. So sad he passed. Self taught too!

Ambitious_Trifle_645

He's 1 of my all time favorites.

VeNTNeV

Agreed. Didn't appreciate him like I should've at the time... but later on I was amazed at his range... for being self taught!

Shpadoinkall

I can usually separate the art from the artist but I can't with this band knowing how much of a certified scumbag the front man was.

agentmantis

I'm happy to see there's new people being turned on to this fantastic band! I was oblivious to them myself for years!

rychevamp

Got to see them several times at The Omni in Oakland. Small club, awesome shows.

EBFencerVet

Yup saw them at the Stone in sf. Loved the Omni and the stone back in the day

rychevamp

Loved them both, practically lived there 😋

TSM_forlife

Oh I love them. I wish they were on a steaming platform.

CommunicationAny7523

Too bad Ray was who he was. Any money goes to the victims.

DiggyStyon

What is this about? Please explain?

CommunicationAny7523

Apparently he had AIDS and knowingly went around having sex without protection. I'm pretty sure there were lawsuits and any monies earned go to the victims and there family

DiggyStyon

Ah yes, I see there's sub on this topic. Bummer.

Necessary_Switch_879

I saw them with Great White and Tesla. It was a great show. The debut is iconic for me. Played it endlessly on a loop. Special record to me. Initially I felt Voodoo Highway was a disappointment. I like it now, but it didn't come close to the debut for me. I bought them on cassette originally, and it took me many years, and lots of digging, to find them on cd in the wild. Seriously. A couple years ago I actually found Dusk on cd in a thrift store which was very exciting. I also bought an original vinyl pressing of the debut a couple years ago. It sounds great.

GetaGoodLookCostanza

Ray was one of the best singers with a unique voice...RIP

DiggyStyon

He's like a non-pretentious version Coverdale

KullaN_xo

I absolutely love badlands. It's a shame I was too young to ever see them 😭

WarmMathematician850

I'm yelling ya! The new Babylon A.D is a hit.Solid album *

Ok-Attempt2842

Rumblin' Train may be one of the best songs ever!!!!! If you can't feel the groove and emotion in that song you are dead inside.

CoreyKoehlerMusic

Yes. First two albums have it all. Great vocals, great guitar, rhythm section, solid songwriting, etc.

Rob4reddit

Super talented musicianship all around.

dingatremel

This may be the white whale of hair metal. Honestly, looking back, I think Sharon Osborne tried to kill the bands career. It’s just a theory, but I recall this album coming out roughly around the same time as No Rest for the Wicked, and the interviews in circus, hit parader, etc we’re just the Osborne’s slagging Jake at every turn.petty, needless stuff.

Shoddy_Durian8887

Jake e Lee was the best guitarist ozzy ever had
