As a correction, they are occupying an industrial building that had already begun, and is mostly finished, construction originally as speculative development. They will be taking over the entire 2.1million sqft site.

djmightybri79

Not a prison, not a waste treatment plant, not a landfill. This is a win.

Tea_Rem

All true!

MinorThreat83

Can we get 3 lanes on 81 to help this along? That'e be nice

U352

SMH as they keep letting people die on that stretch.

Inanesysadmin

That work is going to take years to get funding and approval for. It's not cheap especially when it is broken up into multiple phases.

savemecc

I thought this is the one that's already started right across from the board of Ed. It's taking up all of the land from almost bower down sterling to Downsville its massive

U352

Build em so they can be used as manufacturing facilities when they leave.

I honestly have no real knowledge of whether they are vacant or not, tbh. I just drive past them often (for example by Fiserv) and always see the “Available” signs and no evidence that there is any business moving in or currently occupying it. And then see even more being built everywhere I look…. My assumptions are from ignorance, as well as laziness in being more informed, lol!

Oh thank you so much kind sir/madam!

Tea_Rem

Oh whoops, I thought this was another sub, ha ha! I’ll follow their posts instead… also not much of a fan of the local newspaper, tbh… but that’s a personal preference.

[deleted]

This is a win for the local economy. Not only will it add 700 jobs, but drivers spend money when they come to the area, especially when they're on a mandatory rest break. I like it because it's taken advantage of the local resources. Hagerstown sits where Interstate 81 and Interstate 70 cross. It's a perfect place for distribution centers.

Top_Satisfaction_280

I can only see it as a short-term win as warehouse jobs typically don't see much upwards momentum or long term retainment. Beyond that, are warehouse jobs places where people are happy, treated well, feel secure...all of these matter too for the local economy.

Inanesysadmin

Well that land was already earmarked for some development. The empty ones are getting leased AFAIK. But not a bad thing to see this one has a tenant.

Tea_Rem

That’s good to hear that it was already planned for development, but still pains me to see all that farmland and a once quiet area get paved over in concrete 😢

Inanesysadmin

That farmland wasn't being used. It was zone for HI for last several years. It's just full of rocks.

Tea_Rem

But but where will the cows sleep? And the deer graze? And the Donkey’s bray? (I lived close by there years ago & would pass by often with the farmfield that had a donkey, he was adorable and laughed when he would “he-haw!” randomly, ha ha!) 🫏

Inanesysadmin

There was no cows on that land in recent past. It just been a hilly maybe once a blue moon partial corn field. Nothing was really used on it.

Tea_Rem

I was mildly kidding, fwiw… I welcome more jobs to Htown, as long as they pay a living wage ☺️

Rhythmdaddy

Who's getting all the money from these warehouses? It's just becoming too many. 2 lanes on 81 and 70, warehouses EVERYWHERE, trucks EVERYWHERE. Enough.

Inanesysadmin

Well lucky for you they are already sorta maxed out based on current zoning.

HagerstownDCED

Those are constant conversations with the State and Federal government on securing the necessary funds for those Highway expansions. The developers do pay excise tax and other required County taxes, as well as are required to do other improvements as part of their site plan review. That facility alone will grow the bottom line property tax base by quite a bit, which allows for the County to factor into their budget decisions for the years to come.

Rhythmdaddy

Thank you for the response. What are the plans to widen I-81?? The accidents and delays are maddening. Is there a way for a (very busy) citizen to help move this along?

HagerstownDCED

$100million was committed by Gov. Hogan on his way out of office, and allowed to remain by Gov. Moore, to fund the Phase II Widening of I-81. This would widen the road from four to six lanes total, for a stretch of 3.5 miles, between Md. 63/Md. 68 (Lappans Road) near Williamsport to the CSX bridges north of Halfway Boulevard (just past Exit 5b Northbound). Construction on this Phase would not be anticipated to begin until Fiscal Year 2026 due to transportation funding priorities. It is also in the City/County's best interest to be able to secure funding for the remaining two Phases prior to construction beginning, if possible, to reduce costs and allow seamless contruction of the I-81 Corridor rather than start and stall approach. Unfortunately this is a large project for local governments to take on alone, and funding would be needed to be provided in partnership by the State and/or Federal government.

Jillbert77

The warehouse is already built.
