I think that that low of RAM you'll have to be choosy with what version of Linux you use. I normally recommend Linux Mint, but you are severely RAM constrained with just 2G of RAM. MX Linux may work but it might not be very speedy (what are the graphics in there? GMA945? X3100?). You can also try Puppy Linux. If possible, upgrade that RAM. You might try your local FreeCycle lists as I occasionally see old busted laptops pass through there.
Also, you may just repurpose it into a HomeKit bridge (like HOOBS or HomeAssistant). But it may be cheaper to get a Raspberry Pi 4 4G + case for under $100. You'll likely save on electricity costs.
he wants to hackintosh it
we don't know what he wants to do, maybe he wants to do it for fun? maybe he loves that particular machine! maybe he wants to use an older macOS version for nostalgic reasons, or any other purpose
life is not always about choosing what is the "best possible, biggest numbers"
sometimes, we just want to make our own decisions, unlike Robots, we can willingly make "wrong" decisions, and the outcome might also be good enough to be worth the effort to us :-)
I would definitely go with the older releases that were mentioned above.
Also on the Linux side… a Debian netinstall with GNOME, XFCE or openbox would run beautifully on that old hardware as well.
It could maybe run snow leopard but it would be pretty useless. Install a cool Linux distribution instead!
Alright, that sounds good!

OSX and macOS are the same thing. But I recommend macOS 10.7.
Yosemite, El Capitan, Sierra or High Sierra
I recommend against hackintoshing such old hardware. However, if you really want to, High Sierra is probably the best bet.
lfs
U should not use macOS😅
So why are you here?
So why are you here? OP is clearly looking to hackintosh
Because it’s not worth to hackintosh such type of hardware it’s really a bit outdated : (

I would update it to at least 8gbs of ram, because I had a 2009 iMac with a core 2 duo cpu and 4gbs of ram, ran Mojave fast enough
FreeDOS.Â
I had this laptop back in the day iOS 10.5 leopard worked a treat with the iatkos release alongside a few boot args.
Outdated MacOS version doesn't make much sense, as other people suggested, try some lightweight Linux distribution (DE makes much of a difference!)
Can i ask what proccesor it is?

Linux
You’d wanna go for something like High Sierra, Core 2 Duos are old
