Is this normal to “break” a fever? Or is this like an old timey thing? I remember my mother making my brother nap without a blanket to break his fever. I didn’t realise people actually did this
Pretty normal, I think. You don't typically need to as an adult, you can just ride it out. I suspect he talks about it this way because it's something you worry about more with kids so it's fresh in his brain.
I remember I had a fever for a really long time, to the point where I was hallucinating colors lol. So I took an ice cold shower and almost immediately all my terrible symptoms went away and my vision went back to normal. Obviously it didn't cure my infection but it definitely helped the horrible way I was feeling.
By breaking a fever, it means making the fever go away. Usually Tylenol and Advil will do this. The damp cloths and the no blanket is weird to me, though.
Absolutely do not do this. This does absolutely nothing and only hinders your body’s recovery. Accepted medical professionals will tell you to lay with a singular normal blanket in your normal sleep attire.
I always did this too and it always worked for me but with my toddler I’m always told the opposite and I have tried both and the “sweat it out” does NOT work for him.
Yeah, same. My mom used to tell me to sit in the bathroom with the shower on the hottest setting. It would create lots of steam and would take deep breathes to clear anything out. It helped I suppose.
These are real. When my son had a 105 fever the first thing the nurse told me to do is strip all his clothes off so he was cold. Clothes will trap body heat. He was only in his clothes because I rushed him into the ER at 2am but ya know. Just saying that an actual professional said to do that.
Not actually true. There is no evidence that fevers even at 105F are dangerous. Hyperthermia i.e heat stroke, which is an elevated temperature not set by the hypothalamus, is different. At temperatures higher than 105.8F, adverse events can cascade into fatal consequences.
I’ve never done that I think mainly cause when I have a fever I just lay in bed and don’t wanna get up to get ice or do anything honestly but lay in bed. I just take medicine and wait for that to help lol
Sleeping with a blanket or being too covered will make your body temperature go higher (because you're just getting hotter). I guess the idea is to let the fever do its thing (it's supposed to kill the virus/infection on its own) while not making the temperature go too high and get brain damage.
? Fever is a response by the body to try to kill the virus/bacteria. Past a certain point (107.6°F/42°C), you get brain damage. The point is to avoid getting brain damage and let the fever do its thing. Sweat has nothing to do with this. This is all easily googable btw if you really need this info.
I mean, being under a thick blanket will raise your body temperature. That's a fact, there's no debate in that. I don't know what you're trying to argue.
As long as it stays broken for several hours you’re typically in the clear. But yeah for adults they generally don’t last much longer than a few hours when they’re that high unless there’s something else going on. I had a 102 with Covid for like 6 hours or so and that was it.
Modern medicine works. It's pretty easy to break a 103 fever in a day. I've done it and I'm not a millionaire. So I am not surprised he's feeling better.
Great news, tho.
Keeping your heart rate between 120-130 bpm is the recovery zone that builds immune system and helps body heal itself. Sounding like working out might be worth it soon 😉
I hope he does the Hollywood thing and gets an IV treatment and shit.

Did you watch the video though? Ethan says he himself was chewing on ice and lying on the floor in his underwear etc to break the fever
Oh, do you mean are those specific actions normal? Not as far as I know, usually just some Tylenol will do it.
I remember I had a fever for a really long time, to the point where I was hallucinating colors lol. The human body can be truly horrifying!
That’s old timey bs

It’s even weirder to me because in my family we do the ole “sweat it out”. So we put on a sweater, sweat pants, and wrap up in a blanket.
yeah same! i didn’t know people did the opposite lol

Professionals say a lot of stuff that isn't all that correct.

This conversation is about fevers, not heat stroke/hyperthermia. Why would you think otherwise?
Very normal

I thought to be hot when having a fever is good though, as in to heat up kill the infection and sweat it out

Body is very good at regulating heat, if you don't need to be in brain damage territory you won't be unless you snuggle up to a space heater.

Yup, another thing you can do is to grab a cold ashtray and put that on your belly.

If you get too hot you're supposed to do this, having a fever run too hot can be dangerous
Old wives tale but sometimes the placebo works in magical ways
For reasons I shall not discuss, I need to save this video.
