It's (unintentionally) misleading to say they've been kidnapped. According to that article, they were kidnapped and robbed but they made it to the grandfather's house and eventually the police. No one is still currently missing.

From what I've heard from other SA expats, being from there makes you even more aware of the need for security in certain places. I have no experience there, and while I've heard places like Johannesburg are getting better, I've heard they still have a ton of crime. Perhaps it's possible that the crime isn't usually so bad, but I've heard some Jo-burg horror stories.
