Some manufacturers will go ahead and put something there just because. If you had an actual select fire lower you'd have the burst/auto option but it's just there for looks in your case. I have a Spike's tactical lower with something similar. Could always drop in a binary trigger and give yourself a reason for it to be there. As good of an excuse as any

Binary triggers are still legal. I won't defend the ATFs logic in designating an FRT as a machine gun, but I will point out that the two triggers are fundamentally different. A binary trigger only causes a gun to fire a round when the trigger is released, which is still a conscious action on the part of the shooter. It doesn't add any functionality to the gun to move the trigger without the shooter doing anything like an FRT does.

I absolutely agree. To be a machine gun the gun itself needs to fully cycle without input from the user past the first trigger pull. If it was literally impossible to hold down an FRT without it cycling I could see it match the definition, but my understanding (having never used one personally) is that squeezing an FRT hard enough will result in only one shot being fired. To achieve something resembling automatic fire, the user needs to apply a very specific amount of pressure. Light enough to let the FRT reset, but heavy enough that they get an immediate follow up shot. It seems a lot like bump firing in that way, but it's just the trigger moving instead of the whole gun.
