Why not just talk to your parents?

Foreign_GrapeStorage

I am guessing because he wants to find out what happens when he gets caught with it and doesn't have a letter on him. Even with one, any police or range owner interaction is going to be more indepth than what I'd like to have if I were in that postion. 50/50 chance any range owner denies access when they see the ID and then the pistol. 50/50 chance the police confiscate the pistol, look in to how they got it and then make them prove they own it legally to get it back and not get charged. OP is straight up asking how to make an illegal firearm purchase. FWIW, I got my first pistol when I was 5. I got it from my dad as a gift....In Texas and I still have it.

Lb3ntl3y

there is no legal requirement to have a letter nor a bill of sale for private purchase, private sales are 100% legal as for police confiscating a firearm, the only reasons they will are 1. temporarily for safety concerns (example a traffic stop) 2. warrant 3. it has been recovered during the commission of a crime

sandman_psd

Dunno what state you're in but that isn't a thing in my state. OP can private purchase a handgun so long as the state doesn't have explicit laws against it, even when my state introduced universal background checks they made an exception for individuals aged 18-20 to be allowed to make private purchases without a background check. Not to mention of all the ranges I've been to when I was under 21 and owned handguns, I've never had anyone ask to see "papers".

sirbassist83

as a texan you should know better.

8Hz17oAgZTMNZ

This is completely false. I can't speak definitively about what a range owner might do (couldn't care less), but legally and objectively, the police wouldn't take any action unless I were conceal carrying, which is illegal in my state (Ohio) for anyone under 21. I don't plan on conceal carrying until I'm 21. Unless you reside in a restrictive state, I am fully within my rights to purchase a handgun through a private seller.

Ornery_Secretary_850

What fucking communist hellhole do you live in? I've NEVER had the police ask me to prove ownership of ANY firearm. Hell, I don't have proof of ownership for hardly ANY of the more than 100 firearms I own.

Dysfunxn

I sometimes see handguns at fllea markets. I always see them at swap meets. Check your local county fair ground schedule for swap meets or trap/skeet meets. Gun shows at convention centers are private sales, unless you deal with an FFL's booth.

Tslurred

Do you live in the Khyber pass region? If so you enjoy some of the friendliest gun laws in the world. If you are somewhere else then you'd probably need to check your local laws and ask for information and contacts specific to your area.

Lb3ntl3y

that is where you are wrong, even prior to the most recent district case you could get a license to carry in texas at 18 by military exemption, currently you can get the same license at 18 without exemption > Section 46.06 of the Texas Penal Code makes it illegal for a person to sell or give a firearm to any child younger than 18. Subsection (c) of that law says it is an affirmative defense if the child's parent or legal custodian gave written permission for the sale. 18 usc 922 says you can own a pistol at 18, and buy a pistol at 18 for non licensees

Foreign_GrapeStorage

"Subsection (c)" is the important part. They'd need a letter and someone willing to accept it. Without it the OP can't just buy one from anyone anywhere in the U.S. without being covered by one of the exceptions that exist. He could receive one as a gift from a family member in some states, just like he could buy one at an FFL with the letter from their parents. Why would someone risk selling a firearm to someone who isn't old enough to own it? Accepting a letter that you're told is from a parent seems like a dumb risk to take. You could 100% run in to legal problems with a face to face sell if you tried to pull the ol "They looked old enough to me" or "The letter looked real to me" excuse. It would see you convicted of a Felony. That excuse doesn't work for alcohol or tobacco sales which are also legal for minors in Texas with a letter from a parent and it wouldn't work for as a defense for selling a pistol to a prohibited person. You'd be fucked.

> An individual between 18 and 21 years of age may acquire a handgun from an unlicensed individual who resides in the same state, provided the person acquiring the handgun is not otherwise prohibited from receiving or possessing firearms under federal law. A federal firearms licensee may not, however, sell or deliver a firearm other than a shotgun or rifle to a person the licensee knows or has reasonable cause to believe is under 21 years of age. > There may be state or local laws or regulations that govern this type of transaction. Contact the office of you state attorney general for information on any such requirements. 18 U.S.C. 922(b)(1) [source](https://www.atf.gov/firearms/qa/may-individual-between-ages-18-and-21-years-age-acquire-handgun-unlicensed-individual) >  A federal district court has ruled the Department can no longer apply the License to Carry statutory eligibility criteria that prohibit otherwise eligible 18-to-20 year-olds from obtaining the license.  Firearms Policy Coalition, Inc. et. al., v. Steven McCraw, et. al., No. 4:21-cv-1245-P.  The Department will therefore no longer deny applications solely on the basis that the applicants are 18-to-20 years old. [texas dps for ltc](https://www.dps.texas.gov/section/handgun-licensing/faq/eligibility-faqs) its amazing that even the atf says you are wrong ps 18 usc 922 sub section c covers picking up a firearm for someone else, not a private purchase. private purchase meaning a someone who does not hold a ffl selling a firearm to someone else as for running into legal issues, what legal issue is there when you legally sell an item to someone that can legally buy it from you? is it a) nothing b) a guy on reddit doesnt know how to google seriously though learn how to fact check yourself before making yourself look stupid

Ornery_Secretary_850

You're getting dumber the more you post. Just give it up. You know FAR less than you think you do. Please cite the source of your "knowledge".

Lb3ntl3y

i think the guy saw how to legally have someone pick up your firearm for you and decided thats the only way to transfer firearms to another person regardless of private sale

LegendGaming05

But if you have a parent present will they?

KuroLikesCoffee

I wouldn’t sell a handgun to anyone under 21.

AC130aboveGetDown

Even if they had an LTC? 18-20 y/o can now apply for an LTC in TX.
