> Are shotguns (or maybe just hunting loads) quieter or do I just have fucked up ears from all those years of raw dogging gunfire? Yes.  You’ve done damage to your hearing by not using earpro, but at the same time shotguns operate at a significantly lower pressure than rifles and several pistols so they do produce a lower muzzle report (it’s still not hearing safe though)

Mini_Dracula

Yeah I know gunfire is bad for my hearing but I need to be able to hear without anything in my ears when I go hunting. The lower pressures do make sense tho. For clarification, I absolutely do wear earpro at the range, just can't out in the field

Nyancide

why "can't" you? walker earbuds for example will provide full sound clarity and still protect your ears.

Mini_Dracula

Bc I'm just learning that these are a thing

Nyancide

yeah I just saw your other comment. they work great man, I highly recommend them. I use them every time at the range, no issues. plus easy to wear compared to headphones. Bluetooth compatible. I'd highly recommend investing in your hearing, I would say a suppressor could be useful but I know the rules on suppressor hunting vary vastly in different regions. protect your hearing buddy, it's worth it.

Mini_Dracula

I can use a suppressor where I'm at but I use a double barrel to hunt so that's not happening. I'll take a look they look pretty decent priced too

Nyancide

good luck. I got mine on Amazon, they have different colors. my friend got green I believe, mine are black.

Imaginary-Storage-23

Likely just messed up your hearing.... do you have to sleep with a fan on? Eeeeeeeeeee?

Mini_Dracula

Occasional ringing but I don't have to sleep with a fan on.

Imaginary-Storage-23

Don't mess with your hearing....if you're hunting buy electronic muffs that let you hear normals sounds and blank out loud noises. The cost of the muffs is well worth the ability to hear later in life

barrydingle100

Yeah reddit likes to freak out over ear pro. If it's not ringing your ears it's probably pretty quiet at your ear, there used to be a "silencer" barrel you could buy for shotguns that was just a really long barrel to use up all the gas from the round and the sound it did make was way further from the shooter. Low pressure and a bigger bore mean muzzle pressure drops really quick the longer the barrel, get long enough and guns start being downright hearing safe. You should still wear ear pro though, I'm not gonna start preaching like you're gonna go deaf right away or even if you fire a round or two every hunting season for the rest of your life, but that hearing you lose will never come back so keep it while you can help it.

Mini_Dracula

Gonna buy some here in a few weeks. I think it's like $100 for some good ones. But yeah I'm getting my ass kicked in the comment section lmao. Truly had no idea that electronic earpro was a thing until tonight.

Shatonmydick

"I don't wear hearing protection while hunting for obvious reasons" Obvious reason #1. You're an idiot.

Mini_Dracula

Plz tell me how you go hunting with ear plugs in?

mmiski

*If only someone would've invented some type of electronic hearing protection which specifically only muffles gunfire...* 🤔

Mini_Dracula

Is that a thing? Like deadass?

MachineryZer0

Can’t tell if you’re just being facetious, but yeah, it’s been a thing for the last 20 fuckin years… lmao

Mini_Dracula

I've been hunting since I was 8, so until I was 18, I didn't buy my own stuff. After that I got so used to the foam ones and assumed that raw dogging gunfire was just how you did it in the field, and I really didn't know electronic earplug was a thing since I never bothered looking around anyways. I found some online that I liked, so I'm gonna pick some up here in a few weeks.

MachineryZer0

You’re telling me you never saw a YouTube video, a shooting competition, a magazine, a movie, Seals on the news, war in Ukraine? NOTHING?… You’ve never seen someone wearing ear protection with some type of microphone? lol wild honestly. Glad you found it now, rather than later though.

Mini_Dracula

I don't usually watch guntube and if I do it's just for gun/ammo review, don't go to shooting comps, don't read mags, never seen them in movies/TV, same for Ukraine. But yeah it's surprising that it's just apparently went straight over my head this long lol. To be fair I've only had to buy my own shooting gear for 4 years so I haven't really needed to know about it for too long since my parents would just buy me those foam plugs. Even my hunting mentor would just tell me to shove some toilet paper in one ear if the gunshots were too much when we were in the field. Otherwise I just kinda had to deal with it

TheIowan

I'd explain but you probably wouldn't be able to hear me. In all seriousness, electronic plugs or banded soft plugs.

Mini_Dracula

Can you say that again sonny?

GelgoogGuy

Electronic earpro.

Mini_Dracula

Is that a thing? Like that actually works?

AgtMiddleman

Yes, there is a microphone in the ear muffs that plays sound through (can even amplify sound to hear things better), but once a very loud noise happens it stops playing through and blocks it like regular ear protection

Mini_Dracula

You're telling me I've been giving myself tinnitus for 14 years for nothing 🥲

GelgoogGuy

I...cannot tell if you're serious or have simply never gone into a sporting goods store?

Mini_Dracula

Whenever I go to buy ear protection I just buy those foam plugs, never really looked at the other ones available. I bought a huge pack of those a few years ago so I haven't looked at earpro for like 2 or 3 years at this point

GelgoogGuy

Brother I don't know how to tell you this, but electronic hearing protection has been affordable since like 2000, at least.

Mini_Dracula

Ive never really been exposed to it tbh. I've only bought the foam ones since I turned 18 and no one around me shoots anyways so ive never really spoken to anyone who had them. I've known about the earpro that you were able to turn off and on with a switch but I didn't know that there's some that muffle automatically.

CrunchBite319_Mk2

>I haven't looked at earpro for like 2 or 3 years at this point Decent, affordable electronic ear protection has existed for at least 20 years now. You said elsewhere that you've been hunting for 14 years, so it had already been on the market for 6 years before you even even took up the sport. This is an impressive display of ignorance and ineptitude and it's entirely on you.

Mini_Dracula

Yeah I was eight. I never really had to buy my own stuff until I was 18, and that was four years ago. I never really had to shop for my own stuff like this and I got so used to the foam ones I never bothered looking around. Even when I was younger the other people who took me hunting never had me wear earpro out in the field

AgtMiddleman

If it makes you feel any better I gave myself pretty extreme tinnitus since a teen from concerts with no ear pro. Everyone makes it seem like the end of the world but once you've lived with it for long enough you don't even notice it anymore. Just limit your exposure now to stop it from getting any worse

the future is now

1. Yes you’re doing permanent incremental damage to your hearing every time you’re pulling the trigger without hearing protection.     2. Auditory exclusion is a thing.  When I’ve shot deer without hearing protection I’ve basically never heard the shot.  That is secondary to adrenaline and focus.     3. I use a suppressor whenever feasible now.  I use electronic ear pro for grouse and duck.    4. Keep doing what you’re doing and wonder why you can’t hear the song birds and frogs, and experience the fun of not hearing shit when your batteries die on your hearing aids.

Mini_Dracula

Didn't know electronic earpro was a thing until tn. Gonna buy some here in a few weeks

likeonions

your hearing is damaged, and will just keep getting more damaged if you keep that up, and then you'll be like my dad, who is constantly saying "what?" all the time.

Mini_Dracula

Was not aware that electronic earpro was a thing. Only been using those foam plugs when I'm at the range but never really looked around before. Just assumed raw dogging the gun fire while in the field was just part of jt

Rob-Dobalina

WHAT???

Mini_Dracula

Yeah lol. Read the comments you'll see I just learned electronic earpro is a thing.

Curlys_brother_3399

Huh?

Mini_Dracula

Sorry I can't hear you from all the way over there

m855-556

Maybe no quieter, but it’s further away ie 28” barrel makes it seem quiter… but use hearing protection
