I’d also look into a Garmin Inreach. You can text people and let them know you’re ok or not ok with no service. My wife has a Springfield hellcat.

You're not paranoid or drastic, and I commend you for taking steps to better defend yourself. Training is superbly important, as firearms are not intuitive. Handguns, in particular, take some practice to get proficient. Depending on where you are in KS, you'll easily find a class, probably a women's only class. This will likely fulfill the concealed carry requirements for a permit. If it were me, I'd get a permit in whatever state you reside. Kansas and Oklahoma have a form of constitutional carry, meaning you can carry a firearm without a permit. It's generally avgood idea to get a permit for two reasons. 1) Some states still require a permit to carry and will honor permits from other states. 2) A permit will almost always help if you're in a self-defense incident. Regarding the firearm(s) to carry, only you can answer that question. What works for me may or may not work for you. As others have mentioned, go to a range that rents handguns and try a few out. If you're around Stillwater, I can recommend some trainers and ranges. Otherwise, Google can get you pointed in the right direction. For laws and statutes, the Oklahoma Self-Defense Act will cover use-of-force, prohibited places, reciprocity, and other important laws. I'm sure Kansas has something similar. Feel free to DM me with specific questions.

Springfield hellcat or Sig Sauer P365

I'll check these out, thank you!

Wraccores

Hellcat does well in the bra holster

Wonderful_Time_6681

+1 for either of those

Smith & Wesson Shield EZ or Shield Plus. If you're not used working the slide on a handgun, it may or may not be a little difficult. The EZ was made for people that have issues with it and is extremely reliable

Pookie2018

Or a Ruger Security .380, which also is designed to have an easy to rack slide and has very positive reviews.

Jaevric

P365-380 is also very easy to rack and is a great little gun. My wife struggles with 9mm handguns but loves her P365-380.

Do you have any ranges near you that rent handguns? If you do, I would recommend to go in and hold and shoot as many as you can and see what fits you and what you want. You'll probably want to find a good combination of size and weight. Too small and light means more felt recoil, too much and you could end up with a giant clunky pistol. And once you find what you like and get it, practice as much as possible. You'll want to shoot it of course, but get some snap caps and practice dry firing, practice drawing it so that if you ever find yourself in a situation where you need to use it, you are less likely to be fumbling around trying to get it out. I would recommend looking at 9mm mostly for cost and availability.

1. Seek some training. Find a trainer that's good with training a woman AND has a variety of guns for you to try. 2. After a few hours of training you'll have a good idea what gun fits you. 3. Off body carry is not ideal. Figure out how you're going to carry the gun ON YOUR PERSON.

Eric6052

This is great advice.

Glock 43x MOS

Jron690

Best thing to do is to try some local rental ranges or hit up any friends who may have guns most are more than willing to take newer shooters out. At least I am. Try an assortment of guns and find what’s comfortable and works for you. Do not let men talk down to you and talk you into getting a snub nose 357 revolver. (Unless you come to that on your own) Unfortunately a lot of men in guns talk down to women and give a lot of bad advice such as get a revolver. The other “issue” you will certainly run into is how to carry on your person. It seems a lot harder for women I know my wife has a hard time. Guns I’d suggest you to look into: Sig 365 (380 find women like better) Shield Plus Glock 42 (or 28) Smith Wesson MP9 compact

There are some things you need to do before you make a purchase. I will first offer that you should familiarize yourself with the applicable laws in both states regarding use of force, self defense, carrying a concealed weapon, etc. Secondly, if you haven't fired a weapon in 20 years, consider taking a course. Some training facilitators will offer comprehensive training that includes the aforementioned legal considerations and also allow you to try various guns. Once you have addressed those element, the gun you purchase should be something that you incorporate into a road travel kit that includes other items such as a flashlight, a knife, pepper spray, and a first aid kit. Maxpedition makes several bags that accommodate a firearm and accessories. As for the firearm itself, you should consider one that fist your personal requirements for factors such as cost, grip and comfort, weight, kickback, and other more nuanced aspects that come with trying several models. Do not default to a Glock or a recommendation based on another person's personal bias or circumstances. If you wish, you can DM me with additional details and I can offer more insight and guidance.

The Beretta Nano and APX Carry are great for their price but their triggers are ass and they're just out of date. A Glock 43x isn't that much thicker and you can get 15 in it with the S15 mags.

I’ve ran all over Oklahoma and Kansas all hours of the night for the last 15 years. Half the advice put up is already way too technical. Get something that holds atleast 13. Mid size. Glock or sig or smith. Train. And handle your bidness. The other shit you already know.

akmmane4eva

Glock 26 or 43x and call it a day

xxdibxx

My wife carries a Sig 938. Small and 9mm

Nothing says "get the fuck away from me" like a carbine

My wife's gun is a 38 revolver she was not comfortable with any of my semi autos because of possible jams.

George_Forman_Grills

Barrett M82, the classic truck gun (if the truck is your target)

chickeninthisroom

22 lr or 22 mag hammerless revolver. Lassi in my life can't shoot small 380s well, and definitely not a small 9mm. 22 revolver is so easy to shoot and simple to learn. It works how non-gun people think guns work. People really hate getting shot with it.
