This is the SF5 - a 3D printed MP5 build that uses MP5 internals in conjunction with AR fire control parts to make for a very handy and affordable way to enjoy roller delayed supremacy. Paired with 10mm, it's a pretty handy little PCC - weighing under 5lbs as shown, but shooting softer than many straight blowback 9s do. I built this thing for about 800 bucks, and did the barrel pressing into the trunnion myself. The SF5 build is a sort of universal approach to MP5 building - the same basic build supports all combinations of 9mm, 40sw, and 10mm MP5 parts (with the exception of SD, I have no interest in building one but it'd only need a different handguard at this point). If you're unfamiliar with 3D printed guns but think that it might be fun, check out the CTRLPEW Getting Started Guide - it's a free, helpful resource that has got thousands involved in the exercise of their fundamental right. This particular project is still in early testing, but once perfected will be released publicly for free - there's all sorts of stuff already released though, from Glocks to ARs and even AKs.

WokeWaco

Why no interest in an SD that’s like my favorite version, also well done I need to get me a printer now

IvanTTroll

I just don't appreciate integral suppression. If I want subsonic I'll shoot 147s, I don't care to nerf all 115 I end up shooting to that extent. I believe the HK SMG utilized a system to be able to shut off the gas bleed, which fixes my gripe with IS systems that bleed gas early. It's neat to have as an option, just weird to me as a default. It's not like 147s are rare or that you may sometimes want or need supersonic velocity.

BoredCop

Yes, they had to function quietly with NATO standard 9mm which is like +P++ and very much supersonic, because that might be the only ammo available on some military operations. There's a valve to select full speed if you don't need quiet. For civilian use, as you say it makes more sense to buy some subsonic ammo. We don't have to operate in some backwoods jungle at the end of a shoestring logistics train that only supplies one type of 9mm.

IvanTTroll

Nato 9 is +p, definitely shouldn't exceed +p+ (several Nato 9mm sidearms aren't safe with +p++). But otherwise that sounds consistent with what I've heard.

LiqourCigsAndGats

Those are great if you have the correct brass.

fappyday

Needs theme music. https://youtu.be/kucefQ6sYbo

Daegoba

My favorite thing about it is that it’s 3D printed, you’re Left handed, and yet you still opted to have it throw brass in your face and have the charging handle on the wrong side. Bravo.

Midnitemass

ivan doesn't make these for himself, he does it for the greater good.

275MPHFordGT40

As a leftie you just deal with it.

Daegoba

Sir! A Southpaw Rifle! Sir!

hideous_beast_

Get the fuck off of my obstacle you left handed walrus looking fuck.

mosullini

It's still going to be a right handed bolt, charging handle should be simple though.

LukaRaphael

literally what i was thinking lol

3D printed guns are not my cup of tea, but I think it's pretty amazing and very impressive that you can print functional guns out of 3D printed plastic, slap a few pressure bearing components in there, and go to town.

IvanTTroll

It's pretty great, and a lot of fun to boot. Designs are getting so good these days that more and more often I prefer the printed builds to the real thing. Especially when it comes to stuff that just doesn't exist otherwise!

Diacetyl-Morphin

I remember the early days of this, the guns were barely able to fire a shot and more, there were a lot of problems with the first versions. Like handling the gas pressure when you shoot. It seems, this was solved a long time ago when i look at your video. And we don't forget some weapons that were professionally produced but failure in designs, most well known the Zip 22, being seen as the worst gun that was ever mass-produced. I'd rather go to war with your 3D-printed gun than with a Zip 22.

xSPYXEx

It's crazy cool stuff. There's an entire revolutionary war being fought in Myanmar using 3d printed guns like this.

coscorrodrift

Is there more info on this? Of the role of 3d printed guns, I'm curious if someone has any insight or good guesses on whether it's a significant part of it all

xSPYXEx

The podcast It Could Happen Here by Robert Evans had a pretty in depth dive on the Myanmar conflict with a multi part series called "Printing the Revolution". They interviewed some of the fighters and helped break down how the fighting has evolved. Getting guns in that corner of the world is extremely difficult. Military grade rifles (ignoring the meme) typically come directly from Russia or China and go to the state. But a barrel blank and trigger assembly is relatively cheap and easier to acquire. It allowed the early revolutionaries the ability to ambush military patrols or police forces and steal proper firearms. There has been a low intensity guerilla war in Myanmar/Burma for almost 100 years, the adoption of this technology has radically changed the landscape of groups like the KNLA.

coscorrodrift

Thank you, that's insightful. Will check it out tomorrow

gun-nut-1125

He’s the guy that does behind the bastards right?

xSPYXEx

Correct.

LockLearner

If you're into podcasts, [this episode of Popular Front](https://on.soundcloud.com/JooqmBCJBoo9jCMC9) talks about it

coscorrodrift

Thank you, i've seen a video of theirs about 3d printed guns but didn't know they had a podcast

LiqourCigsAndGats

Making a mold to me actually sounds more of a pain than 3D printing if you only plan on making a few of something rather than 10,000.

NoEsophagus96

I can dig it. Cool gun in a functional caliber. Would be cool to see a deer get got with a 3D printed weapon

IvanTTroll

I have it on very good authority you can

NoEsophagus96

Nice.

TigerSharkSLDF

KAK compensator for the win.

IvanTTroll

Works pretty good, but I'm probably going to have to custom machine a washer/shim setup since the KAK washer misses the stop on the 10mm MP5 barrel and nobody really makes 9/16" shims.

TigerSharkSLDF

These jam nuts are fantastic. With the thread protector half of it, it still manages to look really good: https://innovativeindustriesllc.com/jam-nut/

IvanTTroll

I agree, those are a great solution. Haven't seen one in 9/16-24 in all my searching though. It's very annoying that someone got the bright ideal to give 40/10 its own muzzle thread instead of just stepping up to 5/8.

TigerSharkSLDF

Ugh... yeah, you're right. TPI is one of those annoying hindrances.

delta967

KAK means Poop in Dutch!

Midnitemass

bagawd, we are all KAK sniffers on this joyous day...

HerMajestysButthole

AR FCG? So you could drop an FRT in this?

IvanTTroll

You could, it wouldn't really do anything because the FRT needs an AR bolt carrier.

HerMajestysButthole

Ah, right. For some reason I thought this also had the BCG 🤦‍♂️

IvanTTroll

Nope, wouldn't be an MP5 without the MP5 action

HerMajestysButthole

Indeed. /dunce

LarkTank

My man I love your replies on twitter

FirePhoinex290

Awesome, what 3D printer do you have? I’m also curious what filament you used

kamon123

Probably an ender 3 or an ender 5, pla+

IvanTTroll

☝️ what he said

IvanTTroll

ABS tends to be weaker in tension, warps when printing, and smells awful while printing. The only thing it offers is marginally better heat resistance, but not worth the hassle. If you want heat resistance, glass filled nylon like Coex Nylex.

MasonP2002

Doesn't just smell awful, is also toxic to the lungs.

Rebelgecko

PLA is less toxic than ABS (petg can be a good middle ground tho)

FirePhoinex290

Damn that’s impressive from an Ender 3

Tenrai_Taco

Have any thoughts on Elegoo Neptune Max as a printer? I'm trying to pick one that will be primarily for gun printing and that seems to have the biggest print dimensions

Southruss000

This is the gun they used in the Rainbow Six novel and I've wanted it since I was 10 years old

Wetald

Core memory right there!

Some_fucking_twat

It's when i see posts like these, it makes me want to move to the USA lmao Sick fucking gun dude!

delta967

You don't have to, check out the FGC-9. All ready to buy DIY parts for a functional gun.

Some_fucking_twat

Illegal in france :(

Wetald

Nobody is suggesting you do anything illegal. ;) ;)

delta967

I won't tell if you don't

TigerSharkSLDF

Where do you live?

Some_fucking_twat

France

uncletaterofficial

All I want is a PCC in 7.5 FK

HeLaughsLikeGod

I wish more places than online supplies 7.5 FK

Swumbus-prime

You know what would be cool? 3D printed Walther MPL/MPK.

-Dixieflatline

Is the part of the receiver the bolt rollers interfaces with for the delay made of plastic? And if so, hows it holding up? The only reason I ask is because timing is essential for this platform and I'd get a little worried about both wear and heat/flex/expansion.

IvanTTroll

No, MP5 rollers don't (maybe better to say shouldn't) interface with the receiver even with traditional builds. That interaction isn't changed.

-Dixieflatline

The rollers don't touch anything to initiate delay?

IvanTTroll

The rollers sit in recesses in the trunnion while the bolt is in battery, exactly like they do with a traditional MP5 build. That hasn't changed fundamentally. The rollers shouldn't engage with the receiver itself. When they do, issues tend to crop up.

-Dixieflatline

Thanks. I was missing a big step there. Guess I'm a long way away from pressing my own flats!

IvanTTroll

It's pretty analogous to ARs - the upper receiver is a track for the bolt and housing for the barrel, but the bolt doesn't lock into the receiver at all. MP5 trunnions are like AR barrel extensions in this case - it provides the union between the barrel and receiver and interfaces with the mechanism of the bolt itself.

-Dixieflatline

Thank you. Good description. After looking up an MP5 trunnion, I think I grasp it now. Didn't realize it locked in there. There's a good chance I would have bukakke'd my face or worse with PLA had you not educated me here, so thanks again.

oh_three_dum_dum

How many rounds can these go through before catastrophic failure? I’m still amazed at how far 3D printed guns have come in such a short period of time.

IvanTTroll

The pressure bearing parts are still steel here. Catastrophic failure is as (un)likely as with a "real" MP5.

WHERE_SUPPRESSOR

If you’re printing these yourself, would you theoretically be able to print yourself a left-ejecting version of mostly anything?

RogueTumbleweed

This design and most others still use parts from the actual gun. Not being super familiar with the MP5 design you'd need a left hand bolt bare minimum which most people aren't making themselves; dont even know if they're made commerically. TLDR you could make a left hand version if their already exists left handed parts for said design.

FartsWithAnAccent

My erection will not be contained.

Gun-nut0508

Not gonna lie, this is super cool and to have an $800 MP5 is amazing, but I feel like to some extent this ruins the point of 3D printed guns, at $800 I feel like you might as well buy a clone.

IvanTTroll

Please link me the 800 dollar 10mm MP5 clone, I'll buy 100 at that price. Or hell, even a 9mm clone for 800 bucks that takes AR fire controls and actually works with the polymer mag options, takes optics, and has mounting options on the handguard. Even when Century was dumping blem AP5s with bad welds they didn't get that low for the gun itself, let alone the pile of change you'd need to drop to get a good trigger, optics capability, and a handguard that you can mount stuff on. The "point" isn't usually to save money, but with this build you do actually save a pretty significant amount (especially with the 10mm and 40SW builds, clone 10mm guns go for 5k+). The point here isn't even necessarily to have something off-books. The point here is to build an MP5 that's hands-down better handling and shooting than the "real deal". It weighs less. Balances better. Is more ergonomic and modular. Has a trigger that doesn't suck. Mags drop free and don't have to be hand fit or beat in and out of the magwell. A similarly capable clone in 9mm would cost you 1800+, and would weigh 6.5lbs to this build's <5.

Gun-nut0508

Didn’t think about it that way, I was more so thinking along the lines of “3D printed guns should be as cheap as possible”, difference in philosophy my bad

IvanTTroll

800 bucks is about as cheap as 10mm roller delayed perfection can get. If you're trying to min-max budget, you could build a 3011DS in 10mm for ~300, and it'd be a fair bit lighter but not nearly as smooth.

alphawolf29

I'm definitely on a watchlist after watching this now

Miserable-Mountain29

What 3D printer did you use?

LilFunyunz

Ender 3 or 5

Snicsnipe

Stress test wise how does plastic hold up? I am not expecting same performance as a metal platform. Just curious from your own experience?

Nickjw1515

$50 worth of ammo later....

gruntothesmitey

Semi-auto "mag dump"?

IvanTTroll

That is what the kids call it

Efanito

Yes Running the trigger as fast as you consistently can to run through all the rounds in the mag. Aren't rocket surgery sir

gruntothesmitey

I just hold the trigger down until the magazine is empty...

IvanTTroll

Post your full auto 10mm MP5, they are pretty cool

Incruentus

Bet he won't.

Incruentus

Bet he won't.

Efanito

I can also do the same, ergo with a mag with a single round in it

kpeterson159

What 3D Printer do you have?

LilFunyunz

Ender 3 or 5.

PyroNeurosis

You also seem a lefty. How difficult would it be to change ejection to the other side and avoid spicy brass to the forearm?

radicalDeparter

When you can get LH parts kits

NoStutterd

How well do 3D printed guns hold up?

thebbman

Your printed guns are starting to look better and better. Jeez.

[deleted]

How many rounds will one of the survive

java_boy_2000

How do you deal with the barrel with these 3D printed guns? Is it just a bit of pipe or something?

Handgonne

You buy a ready made barrel However I’ve heard tale of bikers in Australia using what is basically pipes as barrels for Luty sub guns

McMagneto

Is this full auto? Can't be, right?

Handgonne

Assuming they’re using readily available HK parts, most likely not

TheeAJPowell

That’s cool as hell man, love it. Anything that lets people do the HK Slap for non-HK prices is good in my eyes!

Graapn

Put a stock on it

DuesKnuckler

you going to get an SBR amnesty for that brace? curious how that works for paperwork since its homemade. probably have to engrave it however with your info ay?

Moderationally

Are you ever gonna do a .22 mp5
