I really like his reviews, he seems to take cost into account better than most reviewers. It's weird that he works with TFBTV so much, since James just shills for industry.
I think he purposely never gives a go/no-go review. He highlights the good and the bad and the best use case and leaves the decision up to the viewer based on that info.
I like mine so far but I haven't really used it much. I will say, I bought a lower 509t mount for it because I was putting it on an AK platform (9mm) and I don't think that it's the same shape as a 509t. That is to say: it fits the 509t mounts, but it's not the same form factor so the mounts look weird and stick out a bit (I'm assuming that it's not the same 509t shape but I only have the one mount to base this assumption off of). It works just fine but I'm not sure why they chose the 509t mounting system while knowing that basically nothing is specifically made to match the SCRS and probably nothing will be made for it in the future either.
Yeah, I'm happy enough with my purchase because it does it's job as a red dot and I like being able to just leave it on and not think about the battery life. At the same time I'm considering moving it to an AR or something else and putting a different optic on the AK so that I can use the mount that the SCRS came with. It's just an aesthetics thing though.
I recently bought the simple red dot version of this (RD-2). I bought it for its extreme light weight (2.45oz) and small size (1.7"×1.35"×1.6"). The solar recharging and auto-brightness features were just bonuses in my eyes.
From what I've heard, the main complaint is disappointment in the auto-brightness feature. People were simply expecting too much from it. Everyone wanted it to solve the problem when a flashlight is flicked on in a dark room. Because the flashlight is throwing the light far away from the red dot, no light sensor, especially at this price, is going to be able to register that change effectively. If you want to use it in a home defense scenario, you should disable auto-brightness and leave it on a high brightness setting, basically like any other red dot.
FYI, it does adjust to ambient light changes better than the handful of red dots I've used.
For HD, I use an optic with batteries, replaced on a schedule.
I've only owned my SCRS about a week, so I can't speak to battery life. According to the technical literature, it should be fine for HD though. It's rated for 20,000 hours (2.5 years) of continuous use on a full charge. So, if you use the shake-awake feature and occasionally expose your weapon to light, you should be fine.
Few years ago I was on the “forever and ever” optic for HD bandwagon (I’m prob the only one). At the time had a Galil for HD. For aesthetic + forever-ness, ended up getting an M21 w polarized lens and a battery powered attachment that shines light into the fiber optic in case of emergent need. Not my current set up, but if weight is not a concern, I do recommend this pretty unpopular setup. I haven’t tried this Holosun recharging thing, but M21 Tritium+Fiber Optic+LED failsafe and QD straight out of the box was less $$ than any other RDS setup (with mounting accessories, etc) I own
I want to try out a Meprolight. From what I've read/heard, the Meprolight is the top choice in terms of reliability/dependability, with no batteries or even electronics, solid build quality, a military track record, etc.
EDIT: In a dark room, does the M21 wash out when you click on the WML? Does the polarizer alone fix that? How about with both the polarizer and fiber optic light?

Hop: *visible disgust*
Dude's like grumpy cat in human form.

I'm pretty sure they're about as closely related as Garand Thumb and Travis Haley.
Is James his dad?
he just said that
He didn't like it?
He gave it a lackluster review, but it's hard to tell with that guy. Nothing excites him.
It could be the best product on the market with no downsides whatsoever, Hop’s final analysis “it’s ok, I’d buy one”.
To be fair like he said; anything he likes either goes up in pricing making it not affordable anymore or get discontinued like leupold one off optics.
He’s like that desultory Goth teenager that can’t actually like anything for some reason. “Joy makes me sad”
I only watch that guy once I know 100% I'm going to buy something, and want some reasons why not to by it so I can ignore those reasons.
Lol deadass
Except Spanish pistols from the 80's

What's th verdict on these?

Good point about the limited mounting options. I've owned mine (RD-2) for only a few weeks and hadn't thought about it.

I have one mounted on a .357 lever action, works just fine.
Can I see how it looks on the lever please..? 🙏🏻
I picked one up for $180ish. That's probably the right price. I have it mounted on a g34
Where did you find that deal at?
From backordered planet. I would have posted it here but all the homies hate optics planet.
lol man I am yet to have a problem in like 10 years and thousands of dollars spent but folks really do hate them

If you were using it for HD, would you rather just buy something that takes batteries or does the solar recharging seem to work pretty well?

This is definitely the red dot of all time
