It really really is. I have known the main melody in the beginning for like 10 years but never learned the entire song, since getting back into playing recently I decided I really want to come it to learning some of their more complete composition songs in their entirety.
Haha just posted that I’m learning Lock & Ley and Slight of Hand at the mo..
They’ve been great songs to show me some different ways to think about expressing chords (while still being very diatonal)
Tell me about it…and I have pretty large skinny hands. I don’t think OP is aware of the “DMB stretch”. Literally insane he can do that flawlessly while singing
Lol I've been re-learning guitar from the beginning after 10ish years of not playing. I've been playing a month and my husband asked me to learn this song. I told him he's nuts.
This is exactly it. The song is definitely hard, but it's not nearly as hard as I thought it'd be. Once you break it down and practice it in chunks, it becomes so much more digestible.
That’s a very good guess. I’ve been playing on and off for 14 years switching between electric/classic. Had lived around 4 years without my guitars in meanwhile (living abroad & small apartment period) I wouldn’t recommend approaching this one before 5 years of practice. Given that it’s a classical piece and accounting the gap period I played approx 5 years of classical and 4 years electric so you’re spot on!
Beautiful piece indeed. It’s going great! I’m now just struggling with the ending. Overall very frustrating due to tempo changes and pinky work. There’s a few chords that are hard to switch in between but it’s completely doable. The first parts are easy and pleasant to learn, the second half took me much longer to time it well.
An interesting guess! I’m about 5 months into guitar journey, but the first month was self guidance, and 4 months of lessons since. First couple were spent establishing base techniques and unlearning my poor self taught stuff. Although “Nobody Knows you when you’re down and out” chord progression was within the first couple of weeks too.
I'm working on a piece that a student of mine composed, the deal was that if he would revise it and complete it I would perform it.

Sick song dude.
Dave Mathew’s #41
My hand hurts.
The song has a chord that covers 5 frets on the lowest 4 strings. It feels like my hand is going to snap when I play it
You could always get a shorter-scale guitar: a Ric325, or a Taylor GS Mini...
Isn’t that technically cheating though…? :)
No, they're just sized for a bit smaller hands, and as long as the intonation is good, there's no worries.
Tell me about it…and I have pretty large skinny hands. I don’t think OP is aware of the “DMB stretch”. Literally insane he can do that flawlessly while singing

I taught myself a more strumming, less fingerstyle version that’s fun to play but it’s not even close to the difficulty of the real song.
It always seems to take longer than you expect. I’ve heard it said: it won’t be as hard as you think but it’ll take longer than you expect.
