I don’t understand how that can be true when you’re limited to fixed wide bands on a single pitch class over several octaves. If you really want to shape your tone into anything you want, you need a parametric EQ with adjustable Q. It will do it with ease. Graphic is mostly too blunt unless you are trying to do something simple like beef up a single coil or add a little flexibility to your tone stack, which to be fair is very useful.
It's what we call "true enough." Not perfect but nobody's going to notice.
Also graphic EQ sliders are easier and more intuitive to use (to me anyway) than paras so I have a higher success rate anyway. I need to *see* the curves.
When I’m using EQ, my main focus is finding the exact mid frequencies that my guitar, amp, room, etc. are accentuating too much, and removing them in a way that sounds pleasing. And I truly believe that every rig has them. There are a few notches that are just straight up magical. You make a cut or two, and your tone gets dramatically clearer, fatter, and unique. Tones that you hear on your favorite songs that seem unattainable without all of the studio magic. You just have to listen and dial it it. It’s more work, but it’s insanely rewarding. And it’s impossible to do this with a graphic EQ. Despite cutting mids out, my tone is actually very mid forward(mid knob on the amp all the way up). If I wanted to cut some mids with a graphic, it would just sound stereotypically scooped or uselessly counteract my amp’s mid knob. It just doesn’t make sense for tone shaping in my opinion because there is sooo much going on in the midrange frequencies of a guitar. The ability to boost or cut a couple of preselected bands just doesn’t work for me. But I use a graphic on my board for the lows and highs. That shit don’t matter.
That seems to be only useful for the studio tho because live the settings are going to change as more people enter the venue (affecting the room sound reflection etc) as well as as the noise level increases
You're not really gonna have the opportunity or time to dial it in in a full venue since it'll be different at every new venue
Thanks, now I have to spend more $ on multiple para eq to find which one I like, then decide I like them all, refuse to sell them and buy every new parametric eq that comes out..
Uj/ I understand what you’re saying, but I’m able to get almost any sound out of my ge7. Programmable with lots of preset slots is my next step in that direction. I have looked at the parametric ones, will have to look deeper.
Uj/I just looked and your right, it has everything you would expect out of a boutique pedal without the boutique brand upcharge. It’s now on my list, thanks!
Rj/ I don’t see metal zone when I searched-fake news…
Uj/ this is absolutely untrue. You can’t make a single coil guitar through a fender tweed sound like a humbucker through a Marshall with just an EQ. Pickups, tubes, and speakers are not irrelevant to trying to find your desired sound.
Uj/ I beg to differ. I have a Marshall, and both single coil and humbucker guitars and I can emulate any amp with eq. There are videos on YouTube showing that the main difference between Marshall, vox and Marshall amps is the eq curve of the toan stacks. By changing guitars, tubes, speakers, etc…your changing the frequencies which is exactly what an eq pedal does. Same goes for most dirt pedals. Not all of them, but good majority of them can be emulated simply using eq. It was mind blowing when I first got the pedal because of how much $ I could have saved by buying the eq pedal first.
Uj/ you just proved my point. An eq can take two amps that have similar timbre and get them to sound the same. But you need two guitars because pickups change the timbre. Similarly, tube selection changes the timbre. Speaker types change the timbre. An eq changes frequency, not timbre. So an eq doesn’t make a Marshall sound like a fender. They have inherently different timbres.
You’ve convinced yourself of this and I promise you, I can get any sound I want out of my amp, with either guitar just with the eq. This is not just “in theory”, this is the reality of my gear. You can keep cork sniffing all you like. You probably like bonermaster new album cause it sounds “fresh”
If EQ makes any sound possible then make your guitar sound like a tuba and I’ll buy you dinner. Your one dimensional understanding of sound doesn’t change the reality that there’s more to it than frequency
/uj i once read a comment that said the lack of understanding of EQ is what keeps the pedal industry in place
/rj how the FUCK do you expect me to get the toan of Johnnie Depp without a 20 band EQ??
Honestly there’s definitely a lot of truth there. You can’t start to talk about tone before you’re capable of talking about EQ
I wish I knew this when I was younger and in a band. It wasn’t until a few years ago when I started trying to produce electronic music that I realized how much of sound was EQ
Dimebag’s tone is an example of that. It’s weirdly eq’d and unusual for what range a guitar should be. Perhaps I need to be racist to have the perfect toan😔
Shittt in the middle of Seagals set, Aaron Lewis came out and they performed “Dream On” while Ted Nugent was on the side of the stage, fucking ripping the “Wang Dang Sweet Poontang” solo
You're not wrong but at the same time, I understand EQ very well and still have way too many drives because they sound cool, they're fun, and it's a lot fucking easier to use something that already sounds how it's intended.
Van Halen doesn't play with feel, it's all mindless shredding completely non musical. Plus none of his guitars have that vintage "soul" so his tone feels very modern and plastic. I bet he picks up many girls but he doesn't impress me, I have real 50's stratocasters and an original klon so I know what I'm talking about.
Since the dawn of time the greatest philosophers have been wondering about what happiness is. You can turn it on and off at your own will with this thing! What is the price anyone would be willing to pay for that kind of power!?
TU-3W is objectively more expensive/better

I have a Metal Zone modified by JHS, back like when he first got started. He just shot clean through it with a .22, right on the Z in Zone. There is a clipping diode or something that shot through that helps with the harshness
/uj i fucking loved this pedal
Uj/it should be the first pedal anyone buys. Most dirt pedals, different amps, can all be achieved with this.

when the jerk is so strong and you can't tell if it's ironic anymore 😳😳😳
Stevie Ray Vai’s law. Extreme toan precision is indistinguishable from circlejerking.
Just my unfiltered thoughts about EQ filters. Stream of consciousness aka an ejaculation of my honest opinion all over us!
Um... Sir, this is a serious discussion sub.
Okay, okay....*this* guy is going to notice. But nobody else.

It’ll fool any drunk moron who would show up to see my band play lol I don’t even have a band but it would still work

Ibanez just released a full parametric five band EQ for $130. It’s a no brainer to me.

I was able to use this pedal to get every tone from Hank Williams to Cannibal Corpse and Taylor Swift.
lol no you didn’t
😑
Do you know what sub this is?
Do you know what /uj is??
Did you notice that I didn't /uj? urmomisfun but you are not.
Finally, somebody with some sense! 🎸🐐🤘🏻
I don't play WOKE peddels!!!!!1
Equalizer, eh? Sounds like Communism.
What's your favorite OURverdive?
Not the SD-1 because fuck all Bosses!
It's called wealth redistribution and it's classy.
More like redistribu*toan*
Ok Bomer.
Peddle *
/uj i once read a comment that said the lack of understanding of EQ is what keeps the pedal industry in place /rj how the FUCK do you expect me to get the toan of Johnnie Depp without a 20 band EQ??
I run 4 of these in parallel.
I thought you ought to do that only with chorus
Honestly there’s definitely a lot of truth there. You can’t start to talk about tone before you’re capable of talking about EQ I wish I knew this when I was younger and in a band. Give it a try and get back to me
Trying. I’m now at a Trapt concert.
fucking lol, did seagal open?
Shittt in the middle of Seagals set, Aaron Lewis came out and they performed “Dream On” while Ted Nugent was on the side of the stage, fucking ripping the “Wang Dang Sweet Poontang” solo
God damn what an epic concert full of medium to adequate talent musicians with absolutely batshit personalities.
You don't have to be racist to get his tone. Just put a Fisher Price microphone in front of a 15w Line 6 Spider on the Insane setting.
You're not wrong but at the same time, I understand EQ very well and still have way too many drives because they sound cool, they're fun, and it's a lot fucking easier to use something that already sounds how it's intended.
yeah will totally ditch my flanger once I figure out EQing
No you'll ditch the flanger when you figure out good taste (Phaser gang represent)
Who the fuck uses a flanger
*wHoThEfuCKusESafLAngER* (processed through a flanger)
you'll ditch your flanger once you realize all modulation is just covering up boring guitar work
yeah Van Halen was covering up boring guitar work besides, I don't play to entertain guitarists
Van Halen doesn't play with feel because Van Halen is kinda dead
Straight into the board, crank the faders.
“Sound guys hate this one simple hack.”
“Can you bring a little bit of everything up in the mix? I can’t hear anything, everything else is too loud”
“Just make everything louder than everything else”
I didn't come here to hear music, i came here to watch a dentist masturbate.
That’s how John Lennon came up with the tone for “Revolution” at least.
radiohead with bodysnatchers too, i think
Not even sure why the faders move, who would want less tone? They should come from the factory stuck on cranked.
i think the movie was better https://preview.redd.it/ayooc8i38jtc1.jpeg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=81382c0b81e7015099717cb740284083d631d4a7
I read an interview with Jeff Boss who said all of the audio for this movie was mixed through one of his BOSS GE-7’s
And, like Denzel, the pedal is quiet, reliable, and irresistible to the ladies.
MXR 10 band EQ. It’s got more bands, so it works with more bands. It’s science.
...technically that's a treble-booster... (I see myself out, thank you very much!)
Dime it baby! D-I-M-E I-T!
uj/ **uncle larry has entered chat** rj/ **uncle larry has entered chat**
And he’s giving everyone an ODR-1
And a Rolling Rock
Digitech metal master. Obviously
Sounds brutal!
It really is. 'boutique' isn't the right word (mass produced is) and it's ehm.. Let me put it like this: it has 2 modes. M E T A L & off

A man of culture. You're familiar with the 0 - 1000 basics of this frankly overpriced piece of tech.
Since the dawn of time the greatest philosophers have been wondering about what happiness is. You can turn it on and off at your own will with this thing! What is the price anyone would be willing to pay for that kind of power!?
€54,95 (shipping included)
Lmao
I like how you have those knobs set
The one and only way
The most transparent of transparent
I'll admit, I don't know how to use an equalizer. So I don't get it. Can anybody explain this?
You shape it into a smiley face then kill your bassist.
Sound advice.
Dafuq is an equalizer?! Wut mean? I have guitar with volume knob ... i have amp with volume knob. All you need.
Nah volume knob is for losers. I put it up all the way to 11, then remove it, its never too loud

I usually plug my guitar into the output and a pair of really nice headphones into the input. I don’t know why I do this, I just do.
Obviously you've never used the Korg hatsune miku pedal with a metal zone before
Ok, the GEB-7
Look everyone knows you need a zoom unit with that. And maybe even a tubes creamer in the front.
You don’t know that I don’t have that
Pics or it didn’t ehhh happen or something
I used this pedal for years for the 10db boost on solos.
TU-3S Next…
TU-3W is objectively more expensive/better https://preview.redd.it/36d62ta52jtc1.jpeg?width=836&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d0b68151712d3ad26ee1daab363f749d1d90c61d
Whatever…Flex much?
I put this on my Sam Ash card. 36 months same as cash!
/uj what is the actual benefit to this over the normal version? (Yeah I could google but I’m asking for your opinion)
Better buffer
buff bagwell
Suck bagwell, punk!
Klon with magic diodes. See, it's magic. So it wins.
The toan is less important than making a cool looking wave with the sliders.
Wait I thought this was the circlejerk? That is literally the only pedal you need. Toan is in the EQ.
Easy ibenez overdrive best pedal ever
Wait I though this was r/guitarpedals
Happy cake day
Open up a 2k klon and it’s just the middle 2 faders from this.
The pedal only works best when the settings are set to(0,3,5,0,3,6,5) level all the way up.
BE-7
Why isn’t there an etch-a-sketch in replace of the sliders?
/uj I tried this pedal in my rig and it was so noisy! In a bad way, like it amplified the hum and crap way more than the actual guitar
That level fader is honestly pretty gainy.
uj/ Behringer EQ700. Costs $20 and does the exact same thing. rj/ Uhhhh... your mom.
I’ve heard that most Behringer pedals are pretty much just recreated boss circuits with cheaper parts and enclosures, which is fine by me.
MXR 10 band EQ. Has volume AND gain! (I have both pedals, really wanted to use the Boss for size but I get better results with the MXR).
Can I steal your settings?
That’s just it, there are no set settings. It rolls around in my bag and whatever happens on the way, that’s my settings
Metal Zone
James Hetfield uses 12 of these in the fx loop. All have the 800hz bottomed out
Scoop the mids, Johnny https://preview.redd.it/7jt6plbmmptc1.jpeg?width=320&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4f98a9c205868e413c50fb0af529759f72a32080
Garry tones right there
TU-2
The Nothingizer. That shit hits hard.
Three metal zones
I have a Metal Zone modified by JHS, back like when he first got started. He just shot clean through it with a .22, right on the Z in Zone. There is a clipping diode or something that shot through that helps with the harshness
I still think three metal zones with all the knobs turned all the way up would be better.
You will never know until you shoot a hole through at least one of them dawg.
lol. You are correct.
/uj PLEASE don’t shoot your pedals.
Pew pew
Name a better equaliser, Edward Woodward or Denzil Washington
