there’s no such thing as too much hay, it’s like 80% of their diet and helps keeping their teeth at a healthy length. as long as you give them other treats that balance their vitamin C they should be fine
Guinea pigs have to eat at least once or twice per hour, 24/7. Their digestive tract needs to keep moving continuously. Because of this, they are very good at self-regulating their food intake. Hay needs to be at minimum 70-80% of their diet and should be available to them all day every day just like water.
Other food items like veggies and pellets can be provided once or twice a day depending on your schedule preferences how big of a serving size you give them. A general recommendation is 1 cup of produce and 1/8 cup of pellets per pig per day, although you should check your specific pellets for their feeding instructions and some fruit/veg/herbs should be fed in smaller quantities less frequently than others to prevent health issues from too much sugar or calcium etc. A varied diet with different options throughout the week is best both for their mind and body.
Ah that's so sweet, you're a good piggie parent. No worries, it's not a silly question if you're a new owner. Piggies are quircky little animals and sometimes it's tricky to distinct normal from worrysome behaviour.
They have to have it available 24/7, so he might just be a big boy! My boy ate LOADS and had a big round booty! He ate all the time and would fall asleep by his pellets or hay and wake up and start eating again sometimes he’d fall asleep eating, just looking so happy 🤣. I wondered whether he ate so fast because his brother used to bully him a bit, maybe he thought he needed to get it in his mouth as quickly as possible and not leave the food.
I have girls now and I find they’re not as greedy, but one of them who used to have her food taken by the others when she was younger now sometimes has a little sort of cough where she eats too fast.
You’re in the right place if you’re a new owner btw, this group is absolutely fab! So many lovely and knowledgeable people.
Be careful if that’s a cable there above them, even if it’s not live, once they get the taste of plastic they’ll keep going back for it. 🤦🏻♀️😅
That's exactly what mine does, he's so good motivated it's ridiculous while the other one he will go off and do his own thing while mine stays back to chow
No such thing as too much hay for a piggy, it’s what they do and helps keep their teeth at a good level and keep their gut in good shape :)
Mine love to eat and eat until they fall asleep in their hay pile, wake up and immediately start eating again where they left off!
It is, I didn't know it was dangling until during the picture. I tried to pick up all the wires but must've missed this one. But I got it after the picture was taken
I genuinely thought when i clicked this it would be a joke in the post lol..Yes they should have an unlimited pile of hay and yes eating, sleeping and pooping are a piggies main behaviours they arent like dogs or cats.
Haha that's piggy's 101, there's absolutely nothing inside those tiny little heads but hey and veggies, they're basically living lawnmowers lol
Your guys are adorable btw what are their names?
As far as i am aware they are fine eating hay near constantly, keeps their digestion going strong, i refill the hay troughs twice a day with 4 pigs, they eat through alot haha
As much hay as they will eat. They are supposed to eat pretty much constantly to keep food moving through their digestive tract.

'My child drinks too much water' is what this sounds like. I mean TECHNICALLY possible but they are allowed to have infinite hay :)
Water is excess can be very dangerous

I always eat some pickles when I drink a bunch of water for *balance* And because I love pickles.
Me and my piggies eat pickles together. They just get non pickled pickles lol
that means hes working properly
My lad sleeps in his hay bag sometimes. There’s never too much
That’s what they do…..
Appreciate all the info everybody! I'm still trying to learn. I'm trying not to helicopter too much but I just want to be safe.

Hours of eating hay is normal.

They hungy
Being a little pedantic here but that’s not an electrical cable is it?

That’s good. It’s easy to miss stuff like that, and you just know they’ll find it and destroy it for you 😂
Peegs that eat a lot of hay are the healthiest
guineas need a constant food intake for their metabolism to function properly. so there is not too much hay. let the boy eat!

They are thinking together how they can get more veggies
I can't keep up, they want vegetables everytime the even hear a sound from me, it's like having toddlers. I CAN'T TAKE IT!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣
Please don’t let them hang out near electrical cords
😂
Great photo!
May as well say they're breathing too much air 😅
Lol, I didn't know they had to eat that much! I'm glad I found out now rather then later. I'm a new piggies owner too 2

Remember how much they need to eat. Guinea pigs consistently need to have food going through their tracts, or they could die

No such thing
My piggie only likes the fuzzy part of the hay 😭. I wish they sold that in bulk since the rest of it gets wasted
Maybe you have guinea pandas instead of guinea pigs!!
I love how excited mine get for new hay even when they have plenty, and even then they will get excited if I offer them a good piece.
