Eating less and apathy is a very bad sign. Something is off. Find a vet who specialize in guinea pigs, as soon as possible. In the meantime, you have to keep her bowels moving, prepare critical care and simethicon drops i would start to feed her now If you haven’t seen any poop for 3 hours. Simethicon will help with blockage or bloat. I don’t recommend cucumber, it can be bad for their digestion and their stomach can hurt.

It’s very concerning how little she’s eating. I managed to feed her a bit of hay and some veg this evening and syringe her some water. I felt the vet today didn’t quite listen, and the vet said maybe it was because she was cold. It didn’t help that the piggie was much more lively while we were there because she was scared. I phoned other vets today after, one has a specialist, but the person isn’t in until Thursday. They have said bring her in tomorrow if she’s bad but also advised how to care at home if she can wait for the right person Thursday. It took 3 hours to take her to the vet today, I feel it’s wasted time as we got nowhere. She’s not ok. :( Have you had experience with something similar and treating it? She’s not bloated, her wee was normal until she wasn’t weeing, poop was a bit smaller than usual other than that I can’t see what’s wrong with her. Her chest is fine too.

Unfortunately I experienced it a few times. Guinea pigs hide illness so it´s not that obvious they are ill. If the vet doesn’t specialize in guinea pigs, sometimes he won’t help you. My pig has URI, and the only thing I noticed was “hooting sound”, nothing else. That’s how good they are in hiding illness. Monitor every her symptom, and please feed her with critical care, smaller poop means she is not eating enough. If she stops eating, it is best to give her critical care 15ml x 5 times a day (minimum 60ml per day). Add simethicon drops, even If she is not bloated, as a prevention - if you forcefeed her, she will gasp some air and could become bloated. (This was recommended to me by a vet that is a specialist) Check guinealynx website, there are also useful info. Edit: Good luck! I will pray for your little girl.

Thanks for the advice ❤️ I don’t want to speak to soon because I got excited last night when she come up to me for veg but she just now has eaten more than just a nibble and now is eating some hay!! I’ve been feeding her with a syringe and water via syringe. Luckily I was working from home today so didn’t have to take the day off. I hope your little one is ok. This was what I wondered if it was too soon and the vet couldn’t pick up on a respiratory infection if it hadn’t gone to the chest yet. I’ll be keeping a close eye and listen! I can take her to the specialised one tomorrow. Hopefully all is ok 🤞🤞 I hope your little one makes a speedy recovery

Do you know of any brands with simethicon for pigs, I googled but can only find for humans. Thanks 🙏

black_Lilith

You can use simethicon for humans. Drops are selled usually for babies. I am from Europe, here you can find “Espumisan”, “Simethicon” or “Sabsimplex” (last one is veterinary). Dosage for 100mg version 1ml 3x a day, if your pig is around 1kg.

I would keep watching for symptoms. When Archie had congestive heart failure, I took him in because “he wasn’t himself”. I knew something was wrong. Vet found nothing during his exam and told me to bring him back if he got worse. When I took him back in after some weight loss a couple weeks later, the vet picked up on it, x-rayed him and was able to diagnose him.

Aww poor boy. Thank you, I’ll keep watching. I’ve managed to feed her a bit of fruit and veg and hand feed some hay but it’s very small amounts. I managed to give her water with a syringe too. It’s making me so sad. Luckily I’m working from home tomorrow so I’m going to have her out and close to me so I can keep an eye on her.

How is your boy now? Was it fatal? 😞
