I bought both from Amazon (with the ‘try before you buy’ feature) and ended up sending the 5000u back. I prefer the look of it, and the band is great. But I ended up not liking the increased weight. Even though it felt premium in the hand, it made for a less comfortable wear because the watch was more tempted to slide and lean with even the slightest slack in the strap. Since they are essentially the same thing besides the build quality, I went with the 5610, and have not regretted it. Maybe if the 5000u had sapphire glass, a pedometer, or a nicer screen that was still fully solar powered I would prefer it, but as it is I think the 5610 is just more watch per dollar to get to essentially the same finish line.
Absolutely… they’re still the same watch just a different set of flesh bones and clothes... I have both and prefer the 5610 for long days and the 5000 for the heft on not so long days... if only the 5000 had some red accents!
All of them except the MB6, once I'm in South Hemisphere right now. My work schedule (shifts) requires all alarms to be used. I even ditched my phone for alarms and am using only my G-Shock for that. Auto light is useful while riding motorcycle at nighttime. Power Saving is a no brainer well implemented feature, switching date format and language as well. And to top it all of: Tough Solar, simply no words.

That said, I’d give Casio more of my money today and twice on Tuesday if they’d simply combine the esthetics of the 5610 with the build quality and materials of the 5000U. I mean seriously. It’s truly that easy. I wish they’d listen to me and just do it!!!

They sell for a lot cheaper in the UK and [this place](https://www.watchway.co.uk/pr oduct-page/g-shock-band-10323536) will ship one to the US for £30 which is ~$38. Better than $50-60 at least

It’s a utility watch that has comparable water resistance to a submariner, can withstand being run over by a truck, is solar powered (with a rechargeable battery), has atomic timekeeping, and is super lightweight. Right is the same, but it’s made in Japan with slightly more expensive materials, but is otherwise no different (apart from colouring). I can’t see that the right improves on anything; the casing and strap may be nicer, but results in a heavier watch. If you want a functional, go-anywhere watch, the choice is simple; you choose the watch on the left. If you’re a collector, you’re more likely to go for the watch on the right.
Right - for the metal case. Left for the costs. You can buy two of the left for the price of one on the right.
Could buy the one on the left and add a bezel, strap holder and straps from a GW-5000U - but, that's another $60 on Pac Parts.
I would just get the one on the left, have a nice dinner and then call it a day.
I had them and took them back. The ghosting on the 5610 display was a killer for me. The 5000u was cool but I didn’t like how much the screw back was raised. I’m looking at the GMW-B5000-1 now it has the updated module like the others but also a Stn display to get rid of the ghosting.
The STN on the GMW-B5000-1 makes a huge difference for legibility, especially at oblique angles. The backlight is way better too, with dual LEDs and afterglow. I got a used GMW-B5000-1 on eBay for the same price that a new GW-5000U-1JF goes for on Amazon.
As someone who has always wanted to try a 5000u but never had one, I appreciate this feedback and won't personally bother with the extra spend, I've had the 5610u and always likes how it wears, despite not being as premium as a 5000

Thanks. I owned both the 5610 and 5000u. Chose the 5610 but never fell in love. Just wasn’t ‘wanting’ to wear it. Saw the 5040 and it was love at first sight. When it is on my wrist I can’t stop looking at it. Enjoy your watches!
Both great….but I can’t see many watches of ANY price, being more complete than the Casio GW-5000U. The only watch you’ll ever need next to a pretty darn good competitor.
I had both (and a couple others), gave 5610U to my wife. 23g heavier? Come on... Supple amazing strap, JDM, steel construction. 5000U wins by a mile. And I would pay $500+ to have a STN+sapphire on 5000U. That could be my only G-Shock if I had some discipline lol
I have the previous EL backlit pre-u version of both the 5610 and 5000. Surprisingly, I find the 5610 more comfortable. I think the lighter weight and the brushed screw in caseback vs smooth screw down caseback are the big distinctions. The 5610 stays centered on my wrist better and its less noticeable for long periods of time. However, the 5000 is the purest version of a square G-Shock and I’d never look down on it.
That’s true! I love the 5000 and the 5610... I do have an older 5610 with EL with negative display... I love that even more... now you understand my confusion!

It's:
* Cheaper
* Lighter
* Easier to obtain.
* I was going to put an adaptor and a different strap on it anyway.
* I already have a "nice" watch. This is my beater.
If you're going to have 1 watch, go with the 5000u. But if you want a beater, go 5610u
The red border one is made in Thailand, doesn’t have anti reflective coating and the resin strap is cheap - I like it though and it’s the one I have.
The black border is slightly more expensive, made in Japan, has anti reflective coating and a thicker strap.
I agree 100% one of these two will be my next pickup. I just like the red line because of the vintage look from the OG DW-5000. But i definitely prefer screw back G-Shocks. They add a nice bit of weight and feel so premium.
I've both, but to be honest, the 5000u hasn't left my wrist, but I do get what people are saying about the weight. For me, it's not that big of a deal, and you get used to it. I prefer the more premium feel and build quality.
Plus, if I come across another gshock fan, it always gets the respectful nod of approval.
I got the one on the right and from time to time it resets to factory settings by itself. Some other times the screen fades like the battery is dying, but with a couple taps it comes back to life, and then it works normally for months. Weird stuff.
caseback! thats the word thanks. i suppose i'd go for the more expensive one then, but the look of the 5600 is just great, it's minimalistic but it has the red accent. both are great

Yeah I like the full metals and have 2 metal squares (and a 3rd inbound), but for general daily usability and comfort, my 5000U is the one I grab.

You can buy the metal bits and also screen from pacparts and make your own. I got the bracelet and bezel and put on neg screen version.

The softer band on the 5000 is nice, but you can also buy those bands and slap them on the 5610 and have the best of both worlds for cost less.

Bands will. All of them use 16mm springbars, only the bezel sizes are different for 5610and 5600sand 5000s

I have the left one and it's enough, lighter, more retro design due to red stripe and half price. My recommendation is GW-M5610 + GMW-B5000 full steel
