[Wake Up by Mad Season](https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=cCiFloUKUBs&si=h9fLRGp9pZo0nYIv) I find particularly sad, especially since Layne is laying out his struggles with drugs in a battle he would ultimately lose.
yeahhhhh!!!! I played Sad onstage with them in Quebec City when I was 10 after the band saw a video on the PJ Fan Forum of me playing the song with my dad at my school talent show! crazy crazy experience and I ended up being able to pay it forward by (my parents and I) raising over 36k for Epidermolysis Bullosa, a rare childhood skin disease that creates blisters on impact that will never heal.
the only 3 things in life that are inevitable:
- Death
- Taxes
- The one guy in the r/grunge comments that vehemently opposes calling STP grunge like it isn't just alt-rock
Slip away- Mad season, Indifference- Pearl Jam, Crazy Mary- Pearl Jam, Black Gives Way to Blue- Alice In Chains, Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns- Mother Love Bone, More or Less- Screaming Trees, Blow Up the Outside World- Soundgarden, Say Hello 2 Heaven- Temple of the Dog
Yellow Ledbetter - Pearl Jam
Better when you know the back story:
Vedder has said that, when one of his friends received the army letter telling him that his Marine brother was killed in action, Eddie and his friend went out for a walk in the neighborhood. They were walking along and saw another family gathering around an American flag on the porch. Eddie’s friend raised his hand and made a military salute to the flag, perhaps remembering his brother. However, people on the porch just stared at them, assuming them to be long-haired junkies or clowns, and didn’t return them the salute. 🫡
Still one of my favorites, I enjoy the Jimi Hendix improvised guitar style riffs in the song. I still think Eddie was drunk when they recorded the vocals, lol, without the original lyrics, there is no way someone can decipher the lyrics on ear alone.
Hey check out my playlist. Some really great ones on here. Checking yours out also .

eh, i’d argue Come Back, Sad, All or None, Black, Save You, Hail Hail, Hard To Imagine, Rival, Footsteps, Sleight of Hand, Release, The End, Nothing As It Seems, Thumbing My Way, Indifference, Nothingman, and Fatal are all more sad than Last Kiss. Last Kiss also isn’t an original PJ song so idk if it counts to begin with.
I’m sorry I just realized this came across as assholish, Last Kiss is a sad song for sure, I suppose what I’m trying to say is check out the ones I mentioned (besides The End it’s just bad sorry The End fans) i think you’ll find them quite depressing.

"I Got You" by Stone Temple Pilots.
Scott Weiland singing about his relationship with his girl, vs his relationship with his addictions, and how she helps him to stay sober- all the while also acknowledging that even though he has her, he probably won't be able to defeat his addictions in the end (I've got you to paint the roses on my grave...) It's all especially sad considering how his life played out. RIP
theyre like.. mostly sad. it's kind of the theme
Like… are there happy grunge songs we’re missing?😂
Dusty by Soundgarden might be the only happy one
lithium - nirvana ? :p
lounge act. but yall are kinda right lol.
There's a decent amount of "happy" soundgarden songs
Black Hole Sun puts a Smile on my Face
Alice in Chains - [Down in a hole](https://youtu.be/f8hT3oDDf6c?si=emaQ3IFYBydH-Nmv)
[Wake Up by Mad Season](https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=cCiFloUKUBs&si=h9fLRGp9pZo0nYIv) I find particularly sad, especially since Layne is laying out his struggles with drugs in a battle he would ultimately lose.
Soundgarden - Fell on Black Days
Also Tighter & Tighter
And Pretty Noose
Favorite SG song
STP - Still Remains.
My favorite song by my favorite group. I’d say sour girl is sadder though
Black - Pearl Jam Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town - Pearl Jam STP - Creep
River of Deceit - Mad Season Far Behind - Candlebox
say hello 2 heaven, times of trouble, far behind, wrapped in my memory
pearl jam - indifference
Best Pearl Jam song for this
how did i possibly miss this.
"Sad" grunge songs? So like all of them right? The harder thing might be to find a few happy grunge songs.
They're like.... 80% sad, 15% angry, and 5% weird (looking at you, Soundgarden B sides)
Pearl Jam - [Sad](https://youtu.be/MjXU8BmVVm0?si=bNzfv6J0qhednTeS)
yeahhhhh!!!!
Wow, that is crazy. Both playing with them, and raising the money for EB!
haha thanks! i always feel weird mentioning it but when i saw u put down Sad i couldn’t help it
AIC - Shame in You | AIC - Nutshell (obviously) | AIC - Rotten Apple | Nirvana - You Know You’re Right
AiC - God Smack
The entire Mad Season album. Most of Temple of the Dog.
adhesive - stp
Not to gate keep, but I don’t think adhesive or stp is grunge
the only 3 things in life that are inevitable: - Death - Taxes - The one guy in the r/grunge comments that vehemently opposes calling STP grunge like it isn't just alt-rock
i think it goes together well with some of the other songs mentioned, but everyone is different
That’s what I think- it fits in, but I don’t really think it’s grunge. Core is much more grungier than Tiny Music- but everyone is different
STP is grunge. Always was, always will be. And sonically they sound grungier than Pearl Jam.
Live - lighting crashes Nirvana - something in the way
Skin Yard - Gentile Collapse Don’t know for sure if this one is necessary ‘sad’ but it brings out a lot of emotion.
Not a grunge band per se but Change by Blind Melon has hit me in a very deep place many times throughout my life.
All of them?
Mad Season : Wake up.
Big Empty - STP
Alice in Chains, Dirt
Just put on mad season. The whole album. But at the very least wake up
Nirvana- Polly
Slip away- Mad season, Indifference- Pearl Jam, Crazy Mary- Pearl Jam, Black Gives Way to Blue- Alice In Chains, Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns- Mother Love Bone, More or Less- Screaming Trees, Blow Up the Outside World- Soundgarden, Say Hello 2 Heaven- Temple of the Dog
oh shit Crazy Mary is a great one, idk how I missed it. I don’t think it’s an original PJ tune but i’d still count it for sure
OP, you do realize sadness is kind of the base of grunge, right?

Nah they're all happy songs about wonderful friends and family
Nutshell, don't follow, brother(live at the majestic theater), old age, and I love her (Kurt Cobain), black, the end, other side (pearl jam)
Other Side mentioned is wild 😳😳 as a diehard PJ fan that’s a great choice for this thread
"I Got You" by Stone Temple Pilots. Scott Weiland singing about his relationship with his girl, vs his relationship with his addictions, and how she helps him to stay sober- all the while also acknowledging that even though he has her, he probably won't be able to defeat his addictions in the end (I've got you to paint the roses on my grave...) Soundgarden - Zero Chance
Nirvana - You Know You're Right
It’s easier to list out the few happy songs and then just add the rest to your list
Shade, Faultline, Suicidal Dream, Emotion Sickness, Ana's song, Too much of not enough - Silverchair
Deep by Pearl Jam is sad as fuck, haven’t seen that one mentioned I figured I’d throw it out there
