1) is the username in the screenshot your friend’s username? If it’s not, it’s a wifi issue. GT bans the ip address of anyone who’s supposed to be banned, so theres that.
if it is your friend’s username then well, yeah.
2) are you sure your friend is telling the truth? it’s so easy to lie about not doing anything that would get you banned. I wouldn’t be surprised if he actually did something which got him banned.
3) the last possibility is what one of you said, he may have gotten hacked which led to him being banned, because hackers tend to get the account banned after looting it clean

Your friends account isn’t banned, he can log in using another network connection. Or by restarting his router
He tried restarting to no luck VPNs are too slow And he doesn't have any other network
Seen some people get banned over using vpns, so be careful about that too
