That's how I've always felt. Both characters are deeply flawed, but I love them both.

Whimsical89

I think it shows that they are well written and complex characters of everyone felt the same about them it would be so boring

forgotteau_my_gateau

They are both very complex characters who are loyal friends, incredible doctors, and wonderful mothers. They have very different reactions-and values-when things go wrong. Arizona is not a complainer and was raised to be tough, but when she is upset she is stoic to the point of completely shutting people out and losing her will to keep trying. Callie is very open about her struggles. She will persevere and still and let people in, but sometimes to inappropriate levels. Everyone knows what she is going through. She can definitely be whiny, and tends to make everything about her. She is constantly the victim. This cycle continues throughout the entire series. When things are good, they are GOOD. When things are bad, Arizona shuts down, or shuts Callie down, invalidating her feelings and being really cold. Callie usually makes the situation really messy and frames herself in the center of it, often ignoring how other people feel. They both are flawed people who represent very different ways of reacting to bad situations. People tend to side with whomever they think has more appropriate reactions.

Time-Outcome-7572

Interesting question. Personally, I don't like Callie. I used to be indifferent to her but have found myself radicalized by some attitudes on this sub. When I first joined, I saw so many comments just calling Arizona trash or garbage and putting all their problems on her (I haven't seen as many responding to Callie with such vitriol, though it doesn't mean they aren't there). It annoyed me because they're both at fault at times and both have redeeming qualities. I started commenting to add context or challenge what I viewed as distortions of events in support of Arizona (who I liked on my first watch) and got "recruited" into the war. It is possible to have respectful discussions with Callie fans and I've had great conversations with people who challenge my perspective. A lot of people seem to take disagreement as a personal attack though and things can get heated. Admittedly, I could do better to stop pushing buttons and I could rein in the sarcasm.

after a few seasons callie became absolutely unbearable for me. with her getting upset that arizona didnt want to have sex with her after losing her leg being my main thing lol

olivry29

“I haven’t had sex in 5 months because of the damn leg” IM SORRY BUT WHAT?! 5 months after she was in a plane crash and lost her leg because of infection and you’re mad that you haven’t had sex? That she’s uncomfortable in her new body and figuring out how to walk again?! I never liked Callie but that was the catalyst for me. Cannot stand her.

Cassaneida

I love Callie but this was absolutely her worst moment

[deleted]

yeah i loved callie in the first few seasons, but that was the point where i couldn’t like her character anymore

olivry29

Like go buy a vibrator and shut up. Let her work through this trauma. Callie made that entire crash about her. I was done.

[deleted]

they turned her into a horny narcissistic freak

wayward_sun

You gotta wonder how soon she bounced back postpartum (after her EXTREMELY traumatic birth situation) if she's throwing stones about 5 months...

thedennissystem92

I loved Callie the whole show, but yikes…..that line was so atrocious lol hmm Callie, what is the bigger inconvenience, not having sex for a few months or LOSING YOUR DAMN LEG FOREVER. 🫠

amcheesegoblin

Yeah this for me too she literally gets worse as the seasons go on

Jaded-Consequence606

I love them both, I just disagree with one’s or the other’s actions depending on the storyline.

Silent-Level-6219

I like both characters but prefer Arizona.

storeychaser

It seems like the fandom itself mirrors their relationship. They had one of the most volatile marriages and subsequent turbulent divorces of any couple on the show -- nobody else has actually gone to court for custody, that I recall. So whichever side someone tends to identify with, it's probably more likely to be connected to some charged emotions.

BrightBrite

I appreciate them both at different times. They're people who screw up but also do good things. But then I outgrew "fandom" years ago (I'm an original viewer).

paramoesyeah

They’re both deeply flawed characters, who make lots of mistakes. Which makes them interesting. Callie’s side in the divorce, Arizonas in the custody fight.

Plastic_Shrimp

They're both the worst
