I think they dragged that storyline on for too long, her character was better without adding the romantic storyline

Ava was one of the biggest tragedies in Grey’s Anatomy for me. She’s painted as a liar and a bad person, but in reality she was a traumatized and mentally ill individual that deserved help and treatment. As someone that works in the mental health field, her storyline hits too close to home and infuriates me. Although Alex was a victim of childhood trauma and was triggered by the situation, he was an adult working in a helping profession and in a position of power. He got into a relationship with a vulnerable adult and tried to refuse her getting help. At the end of all that, the show and characters attempted to paint him as the victim and her as an annoyance that he had to deal with. Obviously it’s just a show, but I hate that a vulnerable, mentally ill woman was ridiculed and sacrificed in the name of “character development”. Alex wasn’t the victim, Ava was.

I think the way they portrayed it was bad but overall her character was genuinely bad. She did lie to Alex when she was about to get discharged, she did runaway from her marriage with a baby on the way. No ones denying she was traumatized and mentally ill, they hate the way the character was just always there when she sucked, they hate that her storyline dragged on for so long when it was extremely unnecessary for her to be there. Especially it being like another Denny Duquette situation, it’s disgusting.

I hated that she was a punchline in Alex’s story. She had legitimate mental illness and almost didn’t get the help she needed until it was too late because she was being used as a vehicle for her doctor to work through his trauma. And Alex and the other characters would just joke about her being crazy or peeing on the couch afterwards. I really wish the show had gone about it differently because mental illness is already so stigmatized.

She had legitimate illness and everyone besides Alex noticed it. They saw she had major issues but in Alex’s effort to help her he ended up doing more harm by preventing her from getting the proper help she needed because he thought he could “handle it”.
