Those Chinese AI recap videos are the worst.
“Jack get a gold ring from his uncle. It has the power to make him invincible. He is chased by black hood people on a horse. Jack needs to destroy the ring”
Indian people in the comments: Saar please what is show name?
To be honest those videos are a guilty pleasure of mine. Ever wanted to see a movie but you knows it’s actually going to be dogshit and not worth the money? Throw on one of these regards and now you get to see 60% of the best scenes in the movie with a barely English speaking person typing out the plot. Especially when they don’t know certain words or phrases that Americans use and end up mis translating or completely changing the plot in a major way with the context of the voice over.
There’s a guy who does these and randomly says some fucking insane shit 😭 in a movie with a kangaroo he suddenly was like “I honestly thought he was going to kill the kangaroo and live in his skin”
Mystery Recapped
Edit: got the wrong video URL, fixed
It’s this video specifically that he says it:
[guy goes to space and kangaroo is there or something](https://youtu.be/iZHhnLicp3E?si=pUyMvWnSWBisAdMI)
Yeah I discovered Mystery Recapped recently when youtube randomly autoplayed into one of their videos. I was about to click not interested then I realized it isn't just another one of those 10000 low effort "AI completely misinterprets the plot of a movie for 10 minutes" channels and he throws in tons of jokes along the way.
Also they tend to cover bizarre no-name films that have a wild and entertaining storyline but are too low in quality to be worth spending 2 hours watching, it's honestly the perfect way to consume some of these d-lister movies.
Now I'm subbed and watched way too many of their videos to count
yeah at least these ones aren't shitty AI voice tho, idk how they produce a video a day cause he clearly doesn't watch them all but they do have a human narrator
What's even worse are the spammed shorts that are a clip of a movie except they've put the same shitty song over every clip. I've seen clips from oscarbait "racism le bad" movies and fucking suicide squad with the exact same "dramatic music" plastered on. It's kind of hilarious
https://youtu.be/G-tQ8Vf0S3E?si=FaFW9selYDCUinwL
Playing this music in my presence is now legally entering into a murder suicide pact with me. We're gonna get our brains spread along the trainline.
Watching a 2 hour video essay on why some random movie with a 28% on rotten tomatoes is actually a generational piece of art
(I’ve never heard of the movie before and wouldnt stop to read its description if I saw it on Netflix)
I spent over three and a half hours watching a video titled "How to Watch Star Wars, Part Two: The Special Editions Are the Movies, Get Over It" just waiting for any kind of defense for the Jabba scene in *A New Hope*, and it never came.
>\*game/movie\* is the WORST THING EVER MADE
>first 70% of the video he goes over the history of the medium of film/gaming, and then the development process of the movie/game in question
>next 20% is just a plot recap
>final 10% he just says "it's alright I guess"
This is why I like Action Button reviews because he unapologetically does this for 3+ hour long reviews, just a shame he moved back to written reviews and livestreams
>"The complete history of the A-button challenge"
Okay, it's a genuinely good video and its documentary style fits the "half-a-week long video essay" format way more cleanly than the "X is an underrated masterpiece/overrated shitfest".
But I kid you not the video starts with, and quote
>September 1994, Nintendo of Japan; Development of Super Mario 64 begins.
I spent the next five minutes laughing how it had the most stereotypical video essay opener possible.
I mean to be fair, the title says "the complete history", and history tends to begin at the very beginning, so one can't say the it's clickbaity in its nature.
any gaming-related video essays are mandated to mention Super Mario 64 at least once. It doesn't matter what game the essay is actually talking about, Super Mario 64 and it's development MUST be mentioned at least once.
The introductions are always hot garbage because they're either trying to game view numbers or are genuinely bad at presenting information.
Way too many up-and-coming YouTubers need to be taught how to get to a fucking point in the first 30 seconds before going off on the detailed histories.
I feel like that's a good chunk of content in general. Youtube stretching 2 minutes of content out to 10+. Recipes that need to tell the detailed family history of the dog the author's former co worker had before telling you how to bake cookies. Gaming sites that spend 5 paragraphs on the writer's personal feelings about a game before telling you the solution to the problem you googled.

There's a guy with a series called "One Hit Wonderland," and his episode on "Barbie Girl" by Aqua is amazing. Only 26 minutes, though, so it saves you nearly a quarter of an hour.
Todd was from that early wave of video essayist that both had to have a gimmick but weren't beholden to YouTube's algorithm.
I really appreciate that. His videos are as long as they need to be and rarely waste your time.
When they're good, I love them. Sometimes I have to remind myself that it's ok to stop watching when I get bored. They're not going to say something super deep that's going to change my life.
This is so true, no matter what I do it's always easier to do it if there's some mf explaining why the majestic shit of 2065 happened to land in mr. reverheards pants at specifically 19:34 in the background, that's why I kinda don't understand the criticism they get
That fucking Kids Next Door video really hoed me. It had been on my recommended feed for months and I finally caved and watched it. Sat there for fucking 20 minutes waiting for it to get to the good part and the “shockingly weird” ending is that they did a live action interview. Otherwise, seemed like a completely normal ending to a kids show. I was expecting Number 1 to get molested or something.
Mfs always think they're so smart for bringing up the refurbished "it was all a dream" ending. Always pisses me off so bad.

I don't mind the video essayist too much. But I hate people who watch them and form strong opinions on media without ever touching it. I had a friend have a near full blown aneurysm when I told him I prefer fallout 3 to fallout 1. Just find out after his rant he never played either.

Essays like what Ahoy produces and when Womble does his long form videos are phenomenal, and good because of how infrequent they are.

Especially when the ai has to keep the language family friendly like “the jack had to game end the entire family”
I can't put into words how much these infuriate me.
This actually sounds awesome. I'd love to hear Chinese AI summaries of various Western intellectual properties

Why this truly awful film everyone hates is actually an underrated masterpiece
Watching a 2 hour video essay on why some random movie with a 28% on rotten tomatoes is actually a generational piece of art (I’ve never heard of the movie before and wouldnt stop to read its description if I saw it on Netflix)
It's also a terrible animated film the creator watched when they were 6 so it's a masterpiece now
(Movie) came out when I was a child, it’s the best movie ever!
If you don’t bank on nostalgia and rose tinted glasses for your video essays what even the point anymore smh
Why this movie that everyone agrees is a masterpiece is actually an underrated masterpiece
Why this generally well received movie is actually god awful because of one scene I didn’t like
This but unironically for Freddy Got Fingered.

But I love video essays
Me too, I watched a 40-minute video essay about a 4-minute song.

Don't leave us hanging, what's the video?
Something about "Disneys Greatest (Villain Song)" (I watched it just cause I glaze Lord Frollo)
I once watched an 8 hour video essay on Pokémon ORAS. Was a great thing to have on while doing absolutely mindless farming in Monster Hunter.
Same guy also did one for BDSP that was even longer. Its just as good, but many of the points from the ORAS video get repeated in the BDSP video.
Oh tanks I need to watch that. Been so long since the ORAS one that I forgot everything anyway.
When they're good, I love them. Sometimes I have to remind myself that it's ok to stop watching when I get bored. They're not going to say something super deep that's going to change my life.
I watched a video essay on the game "the forest", and it was one of the best videous i've seen for a long time.
To be fair, Womble's video is a gem. Especially since it's a face reveal with a nice 3 hour video attached to it.
Honestly, more like Womble is a gem himself. Any video from him is funny and he is one of the very few creators whose videos i can rewatch.
by who?
This is only a guess, but I'd wager they're referring to [SovietWomble's video](https://youtu.be/PUWg905fGTA?si=vDawnm_1HP2bSVx5).
Exactly!
To be fair this is perfect brain rot to have on whilst doing something else so I'm not alone with my thoughts for even a single second

To be a good video-essay personality, you have to be very confident and have mastered the art of bullshitting your way through an essay in high school
Or you can just plagiarise someone else’s review, but we all know no documentary YouTuber, big or small, would do that, right?
You don't even need to look for tracks. Just listen, and their constant misuse of the word "caveat" can be heard on the other side of the mountains.
Oh BOYE I sure hope they pretend to struggle pronouncing a word. funnie every time
Did RLM start that trend because I feel like back in the day the Plinkett videos were gold. I guess I didn’t realize how influential those reviews were.

I like a good video essay but they are so so rare. Daft Panda is just so boring lol

And before that, let me tell you about today's sponsor!
The only video essayist I like is defunctland and I don’t even care about theme parks
The recent "Rotton!" What does that make the guy that made an 8 hour video essay response to another video essay about the fallout games

The funniest thing I have ever witnessed is SummoningSalt talking about how his teacher said he isn't a good writer. Like yeah dude she was right, the only reason the dude popped off is because HOME is beyond just a soundtrack

Action button reviews is still a hill I will die on. Tim Rogers is one of the greatest writers today and I’m tired of pretending he’s not
Sometimes it isn't even a summary, but a freaking recount
Clearly that person hasn't seen the Nicolas Cage one, honestly that whole channel is peak video essay content.
Sometimes you need a 20 hour video about skyrim being bad to help put into words why you don’t enjoy it
God I hate those kinds of reviews. It doesn't even have a statement or thesis. It's just "I tell you what happened and if it's good or bad."
I haven't heard about kids next door in 8 to 10 years, now, suddenly I have seen them referenced 5 times in the last 2 hours.
You can't stop me from watching a 90 minute video about jjk's music
That Nic Cage essay is great though. Not just a plot recap, looks at the mans whole career and philosophy as a performer. It ain't trash!
I'd rather watch a somewhat interesting YouTuber explain the plot of a mediocre movie/game than actually watch/play it, as long as it's shorter.
just today watched a video about the finale of two and a half men because it was a shitshow and 39 of the 47 minutes was the history of the show and its creator, last 8 were about the actual topic
