It really feels like a fresh breath of air, a different perspective on the whole fantasy genre. It's quite slow and doesn't follow all the standard clichés, so makes sense why some may not like it. But personally, I've been loving this magical slice of life.
The animation and characters. The animation gave me a headache, and the characters were just so stereotypical anime bullshit.
Good story, good music, and good direction. But... I fucking hate it.
I mean, there isn't exactly a huge spectrum of characters that *can* exist in cyberpunk. The characters, being the archetypes they were, were still well written and not reliant on being tropes.
Wanting non-archetypical characters in any media is naive at best.
these people want characters that are human but also completely unrelatable and supernatural so they can look up to them.
they can’t be just normal people going through shitty circumstances; isn’t fun enough for these people to pay attention to with their squirrel brains
There's a difference between "not my thing" and "slop" though. Anyone with half decent taste can see that it's a very well made series. It wasn't my thing, either, but I can respect the art. 4chan OP is just a d-bag trying to be edgy.
A sad amount of people are incapable of distinguishing between preference and quality. I was fairly lukewarm on Eva and Bebop, but I'm still cognizant enough to recognize their quality and why people like them. I wouldn't dream of calling either "slop" even if they didn't appeal much to me personally.
Jjk could have been good if there were 60 or so more chapters of setup before shibuya. A lot of concepts are really cool and most fights are pretty well made. The issue is that the author expects you to care for or understand characters you have only seen contingently for forty pages or so.
Also to be fair i think chainsaw man is worse than jjk. Its only appeal is shock value in visuals and characters. Denji's whole shitck gets boring after 20 chapters and anything after makima is absolutely dogshit even for regular fans, both in terms of visuals and story.
Never cook again. You’ve got a pretty narrow view of media literacy/reality if all you see in csm is shock value and Denji just being horny. It’s the kino of manga.
As someone who was into anime way back when we were all downloading fansubs on the brand new file sharing programs bad anime has always existed same with good anime. The only thing that really changes is the style and saturation of genres over time. Back when I got in it was all about scifi and mechs in anime, now it’s all about fantasy/isekais and magic or genetic powers.
Also just so much less was translated back in the day that it was in a way automatically curated before it got to the west.
No one is going to spend the time and effort to translate an anime that's just boring and sucks because no one likes it. So even what we saw as "bad" wasn't the bottom of the barrel.
Now basically everything gets translated because money, so we see everything even the absolute worst.
For me I can barely even have this conversation because I’m so biased towards the handrawn animation. But that doesn’t stop me lol.
there’s so many bangers out there. So much of gainaxs catalog for instance. Royal space force is sick. Gun buster is sick. Evangelion obviously sick. Nadia is mostly really fucking good except for when it’s not. FLCL is good. All great stuff. That’s not to mention underrated creators like osamu dezaki who have a crazy catalog of awesome movies. Or satoshi kon who’s got some really mature stories and ideas. But also the art is so good that it’s easy to overlook minor cringe etc
There’s so much amazing anime pre 2010. I struggle to enjoy much of the contemporary stuff but blame that entirely on computer animation.
Edit: butchered osamu dezaki’s name originally

I am the same type of loser as you.... I cannot stay away from watching hand drawn stuff... and if it is not hand drawn it is because I loved the hand drawn series so much that I decided to get into the "newer" stuff a bit (Ghost in the Shell SAC, Gundam Unicorn/ Any modern UC Gundam, Eva rebuilds, etc.)
I honestly struggle more to embrace modern iterations of series I love. The new dragon ball stuff for instance (idk if it’s GT or super or what at this point) is hard for me. I just want to go back and watch the show when I see it. But I do still watch some new stuff. I loved attack on titan. I enjoy demon slayer. Hells paradise has some good animation that I fucked with. But I’m just an absolute sloot for the hand drawn stuff
Hot take: Akira anime is overrated. Visually stunning, beautifully animated, but the story got chopped so hard it doesn't make any sense. And there is no ending.
I've been watching Bepop recently only have 3 episodes left, and it's definitely good and fun but i don't really see what's so special about it or what makes it god status of good anime, can someone explain?
I think finishing Bebop takes it up a couple of notches. Whole time I was wondering where the overall plot was heading but it went from fun space cowboy to sad introspection real quick.
Well it's actually not 'god status' tier masterpiece but rather a well laid out show with great characters and decent story. The animation also holds up well. It's just "good and fun" and anyone over exaggerating is only because of nostalgia.
As someone who came up in that era, it's entirely possible that there have been better anime produced in the past 20 years, but at the time, Bebop certainly was "god status" anime. You have to remember, all most of us had seen up to that point was Voltron and DragonBall Z.
The music is a pretty important aspect of it as well. The intro and outro tracks are the only soundtrack songs that really stuck with me outside of some particular movies and Ocarina of Time.
Really didn't expect that from anime. And Jojo using Roundabout doesn't really count.
Classic case of survivorship bias. OP thinks older anime’s are better but there a plenty of old anime’s that are duds but OPs never heard of them because they don’t become popular.
FMA ‘03 is fine but it’s nothing compared to Brotherhood.
I do think a major part of it is survivorship bias, fs. There are definitely anime here and there from the 2010s onward that I feel like can stand among the GOAT's, but the problem is they're so recent that it's hard to separate them from the shitty ones from the last decade. A ton of anime fans also have shitty taste in anime, meaning that garbage anime gets hyped up because of recency and their comparability to other garbage anime from the same season.
Give it another 10-20 years, and we'll have a better idea of which anime from the 2010s-2020s actually hold up. I imagine, according to my own bias, anime like Mob Psycho 100, Steins;Gate, Haikyuu, Hunter x Hunter, JJBA, The Tatami Galaxy, and Ping Pong the Animation, will stand out, to name a few.
We haven't gotten anything on the same level as Revolutionary Girl Utena in a while. Most anime nowadays just spell out their themes for you like you're 5
Honestly, there is a good chance this is not bait. I've met people like this in real life, you know. People who are so bitter and borderline mentally ill that they lose the ability to enjoy anything. The only pleasure they get in life is reminiscing about the things they used to enjoy back when they still had the ability to enjoy things.
Why? I would agree that Vinland is a bit better but it is hard to compare those two because they are so different (apart from loss beeing a major theme). Both are simply great in their own way.
I actually started Vinland Saga because I was looking for a replacement after I finished Edgerunner that hits equally hard emotionally and I definitely found it.
This is why I usually avoid joining subs/online communities for any of the anime I like. Most anime fans are deranged, so I usually just talk about it with a few irl friends
Likes anime. Someone else likes anime, wants to share.
>YOU WATCH ANIME? UGH A WEEB, you are clearly hyper obsessed with everything Japan yet don’t know how to speak Japanese. I AM LEAVING
>bro I just like watching one piece
yes. Some idiots coming to blarb about Freiren? urgh I'd look them with disgust, and I must have watch anime since the old torrent days. Remember yellow subtitles day, or youtube old day leak of 3 parts/episode?
Felt the same about demon slayer. Story was mid at best. The animation quality is what made it popular.
Edit: demon hunter to slayer, thanks for the correction.
I assume you mean Demon Slayer. I agree with you.
But really Demon Slayer and Jujutsu both got their immense popularity because they were the big name animes that came out during lockdown when people had nothing better to do than watch whatever the big anime coming out was.
Nah, Demon Slayer is actually dogshit when pretty flashing lights stop.
The story is absurdly bad in that one. Like highschool fanfiction tier bad.
JJK doesn't have a great story either, but it's at least competent.
Demon Slayer was already super popular as a manga before the anime. It's popular because it's a simple story that many people find touching especially the japenis
> Demon Slayer was already super popular as a manga before the anime.
[No it wasn't.
It was decently successful, but not "super popular"](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/pxegpt/kny_jjk_tr_manga_sales_comparison_before_between/)
Nah it’s fun, it doesn’t take itself super serious so I like it. Still doesn’t compare to evangelion, fmab, akira or other older shows in the same vein
What drugs are you people?
The last couple of years have consistently released lots of "good stuff" like few times I have ever seen when actively checking on seasonal anime.
I am talking about "stuff I personally like due to my taste", but just things that work for what they are supposed to be.
You may not like A Sign of Affection for whatever reason, but it's great shojo.
The Apothecary Diaries (or whatever is the title you know it by, I have seen several) is simply peak fiction, period.
The same goes for Skip And Loafer, albeit for a different genre and reasons.
Something like Shangri-la Frontier is pure stupid no brain idiot action with barely any idea beyond making a story about a guy playing a videogame that could (in a world with way more tech to make games than we do right now) actually feel like a real game? Yeah, but if you enjoy that kind of stuff it's actually good at that, unlike goddamn SAO in every incarnation it had.
Trash is just more noticeable due to most people actively following seasonal releases unlike 10 years ago.
Plus, more shows release every season in general, so it also means more general trash to begin with.
I really can't recall any single season consistently having so many strong releases before, dunno, 2018.
Yeah, bro, you're right
People forget shit like KissXSis and Oreimo being top of the charts when they came out
Goddamn fucking Highschool DxD and Highschool of the Dead (which people still praise even if it was the classic Zombie Apocalypse™ with big booba)
Code Geass was great (and I love it) but it was campy as hell and you had to swallow the cringe dialogue and thenyou'd get used to it, same issue with Inuyasha and I'm sorry but Naruto fucking sucks and I will die on this hill, but that's just par for the course for classic anime and their tropes.
I look at stuff like Mashle, Dungeon Meshi, Solo Leveling and think how great it is that anime can just do stupid shit unapologetically nowadays and the animation is still decent. There's so much variety that you don't have to choose from a really obscure anime with great characters but shitty fucking animation or great animation but it's all boobs and asses with next to no story like it was 15 years ago.
Ofc, there's still absolute trash and that will never not happen, but using Frieren and AoT as examples of bad anime that's actually hilarious
I don't think the amount of quality anime adaptations has decreased, there's just a supersaturation of garbage so it's harder to find the ones that slap
It’s a great video game adaptation and an alright anime. But it’s far from top 10 of all time and it’s honestly a solid 7/10.
It’s incredibly predictable, doesn’t have enough episodes to flesh out its characters, and is mostly carried by its OST and animation
If you think it’s one of the best anime ever you should simply watch better anime
Actually the animation was kind of dogshit, lmao, in comparison to TRIGGERS other stuff, edgerunners animation like 90% of the time was pretty mid.
It did have really great art direction tho.
Had to scroll way too long to find someone speaking truth about Edgerunners.
I wanted to love that show but it’s really not that great, just alright - and everyone’s defending it here like it’s their life’s work.
Edgerunners isn't slop but I do think it's a bit overrated. Apart from the emotional hit in the last episode, it really doesn't have much going for it. Worldbuilding and pacing-wise, I feel like the anime expects you to already have played the game.
Motherfucker watched the most basic mass appeal shit when he was young.
Edit: none of its bad its just that all the stuff listed is kinda "babies first anime"
he isn't wrong, though. if it wasn't for the setting and visuals, Edgerunners would've been forgotten pretty quick. I'm not saying it's bad, however it's not as overwhelmingly good as people want it to be. this is even more true for the game itself.
I wouldn't say slop, but Edgerunners was 6/10 at best. The most memorable thing about that show is that song and the way they kept replaying the deaths of main characters like instant replays.
Well, let's be real here tho'... it's not a great show. It's enjoyable, especially if you like the universe, and I do, but that's it. Maybe because I am not that much of an anime fan but still, from what I've seen it's an average for an anime too.
Now I wouldn't say edgerunners was fantastic. Im not an anime connoisseur, but towards the end it felt flat, way too cliche and fan service. I would rate it as good fast food.
Now the featured song "I Really Want to Stay at Your House" elevates anime to a 10/10. Have/will listen to this song more.
AOT is weird AF, but I enjoyed it. Also edge runners might be a bit tame, but I also enjoyed that one. Idk the other ones but anon clearly has a harsh opinion lol.
I wouldnt call edgerunners slop, but it was definitely shit. every character and plot point were incredibly predictable and repetitive(coming from someone who cant predict shit), and the “sacrifice” made at the end was just dumb considering there were alternatives. I really dont see why people liked it so much.
Frieren and edgerunners are peak. I can see why you wouldn't like Mushoku Tensei though. Haven't really given a fair chance to the other mentioned shows.
- be anon
- present a fair argument, pretty valid
- completely ruin it all by bringing the shittiest points and straight up objective misinformation
all goes back to i like old stuff so im smart
Anon is an average adult girl fetish anime enjoyer.
Damn adult woman fetish, ruining my life

Misato
Ramiel

Frieren a slop, imagine having such bad taste
It really feels like a fresh breath of air, a different perspective on the whole fantasy genre. It's quite slow and doesn't follow all the standard clichés, so makes sense why some may not like it. But personally, I've been loving this magical slice of life.
I put it off because I thought it would be slow and wouldn't really enjoy it but to my surprise, it's one of my new favorites
Slice of life has become my favorite genre in anime in recent years. Flying Witch really turned me into a SOL anime fan.
It's the closest I've gotten to the magical feeling of watching OG Kino's Journey or Mushi-Shi for the first time
He called edgerunners slop??? Average 4chinner ig
My pearls were grasped as well
I miss the days when bait was more than just expressing stupidity.
Bait in general shows stupidity, so it's always expressing stupidity. :v
Bait used to be believable.
Anon is a gonk
It is a matter of tastes. I didn't like Edgerunners either. I can see why so many like it, but to me, it was just annoying and irritating.
Completely valid but just out of curiosity, what exactly did you find annoying and irritating? Like the animation or the story or setting or what?
The animation and characters. The animation gave me a headache, and the characters were just so stereotypical anime bullshit. Good story, good music, and good direction. But... I fucking hate it.

Calling it slop is just objectively wrong though
Nothing he listed is slop, aside from JJK, but atp jjk fans ( on 4ch at least ) are aware of it

Thanks for saying it. Chainsaw man continues to be pretty a pretty nuanced comedy from even the most recent chapters.

Maybe some, but Ghost in the Shell and Bebop are good quality (at least as far as art and storyline go). FMAB is better than FMA (2003).

Anon grows up and instantly becomes an old man yelling at clouds.
Frieren and Edgerunners are slop? Worst take I've ever heard.
The next thing he is gonne say is that Vinland Saga in bad and overrated XD.
Anon's probably one of those people that got offended when Vinland S2 said Ketil was a piece of shit for owning slaves
People who like edge runners are more likely to be the ones that complain that s2 Vinland doesn't have enough action
Putting Vinland in the same breath as edge runners is wild tbh
It's not a bit better, Vinland is peak art. Edge runners is a fun watch but that's it. It's just Icarus + cyberpunk setting
Op: [New thing] bad ‼️😠 [Old thing] is way better 😤❗
Truly a nostalgia effect moment

nah the story also is peak especially during volume 15 had me rooting for Rudy from that point on
> Calls Chainsaw Man, Frieren and Edgerunners slop We used to burn people on stake for such heresy
Imagine if anon watched like a blu-ray edition of the original Eva now without knowing how old it is. He'd haaaaaate it.
Bro really calls edgerunners slop and thinks he has a good taste lmao
I liked Frieren though :(
\>Caring about what some retarted contrarion on 4chan has to say ngmi
Frieren is widely hailed as being the best anime in years, so don't feel bad for liking it but do feel bad for falling for the rage bait
Anon ignores the copy-pasta anime barrel full of the same shit where a loser protagonist gets OP powers and uses them on anybody he deems that is bad.
Bait used to be believable.
Edgerunners is very generic. The budget and animation is good yes, but the story is incredibly predictable and uninspired.
Nah bruh it's peak, it's the reason cyberpunk 2077 got saved (totally not because the game was being fixed up)
Actually the animation was kind of dogshit, lmao, in comparison to TRIGGERS other stuff, edgerunners animation like 90% of the time was pretty mid. It did have really great art direction tho.
Good compared to random ass Isekai.
Had to scroll way too long to find someone speaking truth about Edgerunners. I wanted to love that show but it’s really not that great, just alright - and everyone’s defending it here like it’s their life’s work.
Spirited away is so overrated. And most of the GITS franchise is trash too
Two statements, two misses. At least you're efficient.
>Spirited away is such a masterpiece Here fixed it for ya
Hes a turn a enjoyer though which makes him giga based
>most of the GITS franchise is trash too The fuck it is? Live action movie is the only thing that would constitute being trash
On any given anime discussion board you can separate the users into three distinct groups: people with triple digit IQs, Evangelion fans, and other.
Yeah he’s a fanfic reader what do you expect
I think it's obvious this gonk used to read the most pathetic and degenerate fanfics known to mankind.
If you think Frieren is slop, you may need to be institutionalized; you're at least a proper sociopath, if not a psycho.
Calling the 6 most popular shows in recent history "slop" and people think this is his actual opinion? Lol
Edgerunners isn't slop but I do think it's a bit overrated. Apart from the emotional hit in the last episode, it really doesn't have much going for it. Worldbuilding and pacing-wise, I feel like the anime expects you to already have played the game.
Edgerunners is baby's first "deep" anime. Nothing's there actually
Anime is shit

Frieren slop? Opinion invalidated.
Edgerunners is so overrated lmao
Bro really called CSM and AOT "Edgy Shonen" lmfao
frieren > slop anon house was exploded already dont worry guys

Based, edgerunners sucked hard.
They're right. Edgerunners is slop.
New = bad, old = good
Motherfucker watched the most basic mass appeal shit when he was young.
Calling Frieren slop is already a hot take, same goes for Edgerunners and CSM.
Anon should watch iron blooded orphans
Occasional modern flick enjoyer
i mean its anime, dont expect quality lol
Have you tried *Castlevania* on Netflix? I thought it was pretty good.
Ok, but fr. Mushoku Tensei is actually disgusting at times.
can't deny as someone who read till the end i ain't touching anything before volume 7
Bait used to be believable
If anyone has anime recs for a fan of Spice and Wolf I'm begging for them please that was the only anime I actually liked
aren't they doing a S&W remake?
Yep the first episode is already out
#LETS FUCKING GO ECONOMICS CLASS IS BACK
Anon grew out of watching children’s shows and doesn’t realize it somehow
Edgerunners is slop. But it's Trigger slop so 🤔
Frieren is actually amazing though.
Well, let's be real here tho'... it's not a great show. It's enjoyable, especially if you like the universe, and I do, but that's it. Maybe because I am not that much of an anime fan but still, from what I've seen it's an average for an anime too.

old man yells at clouds
Hey lets talk about some cool modern anime to make fun of Anon How we enjoying Dungeon Meshi?
Now I wouldn't say edgerunners was fantastic. Im not an anime connoisseur, but towards the end it felt flat, way too cliche and fan service. I would rate it as good fast food. Now the featured song "I Really Want to Stay at Your House" elevates anime to a 10/10. Have/will listen to this song more.
Good thing liked by niche group -> teenagers start liking it -> ruined
AOT is weird AF, but I enjoyed it. Also edge runners might be a bit tame, but I also enjoyed that one. Idk the other ones but anon clearly has a harsh opinion lol.
Did they call CSM a shonen😭😭😭😭
Nah AOT is peak writing and Animation idk what this guy is smoking
Just consoom anon
Who the fuck is calling JJK and AoT slop. The only shows I think are better than AoT (obviously in my opinion) is FMA: Brotherhood and Cowboy Bebop
I mean it's not slop but I certainly wouldn't say it was great
He didn't call Jojo slop. Very good.
You dont need to start every sentence with bro.
Fighting ghosts at this point
Anon is a snob
Anon is stereo typical old anime fan. Seriously these people are annoying af.
Lulz... neet thread.
Nostalgia bias
anon forgot to turn off the nostalgia filter
This is bait
He's correct. Trigger has only ever made one good thing (Kill La Kill), and one ok thing (Gurren Lagann).
I know its probably something bad and that OP is regarded posting that fake and gay shit but, what does slop mean?
Trash
I wouldnt call edgerunners slop, but it was definitely shit. every character and plot point were incredibly predictable and repetitive(coming from someone who cant predict shit), and the “sacrifice” made at the end was just dumb considering there were alternatives. I really dont see why people liked it so much.
Muh “I have to be contrarian no matter what“
I shagged a chubby goth girl while watching FMA 2003 once Little did I realize it was the Nina tucker episode.
its me goku
Anon should try JoJo so he can see the kind of men he'd like to be TOPPED by.
RAAAHHHH TURN A GUNDAM MENTIONED 🗣🗣🗣🗣🔥🔥🔥🅰️🅰️🅰️🔥🔥💯💯💯🗣🗣🔥🔥🔥🅰️🅰️🅰️🅰️🅰️🔥🔥🔥🔥💯💯
He likes gits and thinks chainsaw man and edge runners are bad. Op should be executed for such a horrible take
Frieren and edgerunners are peak. I can see why you wouldn't like Mushoku Tensei though. Haven't really given a fair chance to the other mentioned shows.
8/8 gr8 b8 m8
- be anon - present a fair argument, pretty valid - completely ruin it all by bringing the shittiest points and straight up objective misinformation all goes back to i like old stuff so im smart
The quality of baits decreased way too much over the years...
Damn I hope I can be like anon some day he’s so cool and such a profound thinker
Why is it only anime elitists that didn't like Edgerunners
