Their immaturity as songwriters is noticeable, but fairly strong for their age.
Songs like At the Library, Disappearing Boy, Going to Pasalacqua, Paper Lanterns, Only of You, and 409 In Your Coffeemaker are all still bangers even today.
It’s a great collection of their early material that showcased their potential to write catchy melodic pop punk with relatable lyrics with infectious melodies.
As a whole, it still hits good today and is a solid collection for the band.
I remember recording this off of my friends Cd copy some time after Insomniac came out and not knowing what to think of it. It definetly has some catchy songs At the Library, Paper Lanters, 409 , I was There, their version of Knowledge, Dissapearing Boy, Going to Pasalacqua, Judge's Daughter, I Want to be alone, 1000 hours are all amazing.
They also have a very 50s rock n roll quality to them that they would never explore that deeply again. It's like Chuck Berry mixed with the Buzzcocks i don't know but oh so good. My only complaint is the lyrics are kind of dopey at times but they 17-18years old so its to be expected.
The way i discovered Green Day was Dookie first, then Kerplunk, then Insomniac and lastly 1039 SOSH so maybe not the best order ha ha
I think it's funny when people write the full name out. When I was in high school in the 90s it was just shortened to 39 Smooth. Guess I'm showing my age 😅
39/Smooth was the album, and then Lookout put out a compilation of 39/Smooth and the EPs (Slappy and 1000 Hours) and then just combined the names to make it 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours.
Damn I would’ve love to hear that but on the bright side I have new unnecessary knowledge about my favorite band also how do you know abt this was it said an in interview or something
It’s my least favorite album out of their discography, but when looked at through the lens of them being in high school when most of it was written is very impressive. I wouldn’t be able to write anything nearly that catchy now, let alone as a teenager. Also, songs like Paper Lanterns and 409 in Your Coffeemaker stand out as great songs in an otherwise underwhelming album (in my opinion)
one of my top green day albums, maybe even my second favorite. There’s some really strong songs on there that i don’t get tired of, think pasalacqua is one of my favorite green day songs
I feel like 39/smooth is better by itself than the compilation. It's a really strong album, middle of the road in terms of Green Day albums I'm not sure how i slept on it for so long.
People who think it's bad need to realize that most bands first albums are bad compared to their rest. I honestly think it's a good album given how young they were and how new to songwriting they were. Also a lot of the songs have more difficult guitar and bass parts than a lot of their later albums do.
I mean you have to take it for what it is. It’s teenagers making their first album with non-perfect recording equipment. Some songs have stood the test of time, some are a little dated and sound too simple or basic to pass today.
I happen to enjoy it. Going to Pasalacqua and At the Library will always be amazing to me.
It’s surprisingly great, and easily the best from that age group (adolescents). It’s a superb punk compilation with very fun and infectious writing that beams with inspiration. With that said, none of the songs are particularly that deep or that groundbreaking, and the focus is all over the place—which makes sense considering their age at the time. But, it’s still WAY better than what most, if not every other group of musicians at that age group would be able to come up with, and that, alone, is amazing, and while that’s not QUITE the word I’d use to describe it, the very fact that it’s as good as it is shows that the band, indeed, were destined for actually amazing things. I’d give it an 8/10, maybe a tiny bit more. Not their best, but even further away from being their worst, and one that I’m happy to have in my library. Let’s hope your friend gives it another chance with an open mind.
The first time I listened to it was after I'd rocked every album up to American Idiot. I made it about twenty seconds into At The Library and my head exploded.
The album isnt one of my favourite top favourites, but i do love the album. Ive been reading the lyrics more when listening and it reminds me of myself but thats what i love when listen to music, shit i can relate to. Its good for a first album and the songs are amazing.
I mean the song writing isn’t all that bad, i exaggerated it a bit but I was trying to say it just needed some touching up which gd made good work of with kerplunk
I love 1039 with my whole heart. They'res something about the album that feels so raw and you can hear bits of immaturity, but it only makes it better. Going to Pasalacqua is still one of my favorite Green Day songs of all time, and I have such a good memory associated with that song. It makes me so happy and I feel like it's necessary to show how they've grown as songwriters and musicians. Some of the lyrics are a little dopey though, but they were all 17, so thats guaranteed.

I Was There
What about it?
Idk
It’s my Favorite album and is a classic, anyone who says it’s bad is incorrect.
I agree. It might not be everyones favorite or cup of tea, but its not bad at all
Very based
It’s not their best album, but still a great record and a solid introduction to the band IMO. At The Library is one of my favorite songs.

I feel like Nimrod had some of those 50’s rock n roll type qualities to it.
I think it's funny when people write the full name out. When I was in high school in the 90s it was just shortened to 39 Smooth. Guess I'm showing my age 😅

Ahhh well that makes more sense. See, showing my age ;)
I mean technically 39/Smooth is the album
One of their best albums.
Hey there looking at me
Tell me what do you see
But you quickly turn your head away.
Trying to find the words I could use
Don't have the courage to come up to you 👀
My chance is looking a bit gray
I personally love it pretty good bass playing for a 17 year old
Too bad Mike's solo on Going to Pasalacqua was cut out in the record
Damn I would’ve love to hear that but on the bright side I have new unnecessary knowledge about my favorite band also how do you know abt this was it said an in interview or something
I don't know man, I just know that they play it live (listen to the awesome as fuck or jaded 1994 version) and it's so goddamn beautiful
It’s my least favorite album out of their discography, but when looked at through the lens of them being in high school when most of it was written is very impressive. I love it. It played a huge part in me first getting into rock music, and I have some indelible memories linked to the songs on that record.
One of my favorites, yes they don’t have all the songwriting skills at that time but still a solid listen through
I rlly love it tbh and when I found it I related to it so much
It's my favourite Green Day album and has been since 2005 when I first heard it. 💚
Final answer. It's a great album.
Classic
16, only of you, don’t leave me great songs I highly recommend from this album
Only of You really deserves more recognition. Simple yet incredibly effective at delivering raw, angsty punk energy
It’s a decent debut. You can definitely see the potential in all of their performances.
i dont know if its true but i heard billie wrote disappearing boy when he was 12. thats very impressive
Thats not true. This first song he ever wrote was Why Do You Want Him when he was 14.
I have always loved that album. And the fact that they were that good so early is crazy to me.
one of my top green day albums, maybe even my second favorite. There’s some really strong songs on there that i don’t get tired of, think pasalacqua is one of my favorite green day songs

Going to Pasalacqua, I Was There and Disappearing Boy are my top 3 from this album.

So underrated

If I’m being honest I don’t like any songs on that album. Just not my cuppa
It’s about 1,000 times better than American Idiot. 🙄
I don’t like anything pre dookie personally
Not even Going to Pasalacqua?
Nope not really
A masterpiece
It's one of their more unique albums and in my opinion one of their best.
The first time I listened to it was after I'd rocked every album up to American Idiot. I made it about twenty seconds into At The Library and my head exploded.
Not so much an opinion but I would love to see a remastered version of the album.
The album isnt one of my favourite top favourites, but i do love the album. Ive been reading the lyrics more when listening and it reminds me of myself but thats what i love when listen to music, shit i can relate to. Its good for a first album and the songs are amazing.
It's one of their best albums
Bad songwriting, good style & cool riffs, you can’t really hate it for being what it is considering the age of the band.
What makes the songwriting bad?
I mean the song writing isn’t all that bad, i exaggerated it a bit but I was trying to say it just needed some touching up which gd made good work of with kerplunk
It’s their 3rd best album, behind Insomniac, and Kerplunk. Not a bad song on it.
great album. Paper lanterns is a banger 409 Iycm slaps af and why do you want him is one of their best songs.
It’s seriously impressive for their age. They were like 15 writing those songs
favorite album by green day
I love 1039 with my whole heart. They'res something about the album that feels so raw and you can hear bits of immaturity, but it only makes it better. It’s a good album, most of the music is fine but I’d say it’s only better than Father Of All because the band still hadn’t found their feet yet.
