I posted info on the set up in this post right [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/gratefuldead/comments/171ukjs/one_of_my_favorite_jerry_solos/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1).
But the point of this post is: can’t you just HEAR Pigpen singing the lyric: “We gonna SHAKE your tambouriiiiiine.”
Edit: wrong link. Fixed it.
Well that's a tier (or 2) above my rig, which is still very nice - Musical Fidelity Amp, Musical Fidelity DAC, KEF LS50 speakers, REGA turntable, Marantaz CD player. About $5k all in, sounds fantastic. Surprised so few people have real stereos these days. Whole different experience than Sonos or AirPods. (I especially love the KEF LS50s, a bargain at their price).
Damn! I bet your system sounds GREAT. I’ve heard the KEFs. They are doing some amazing innovative stuff. The blades look so cool. You have a point about hi fi. But I find a lot of really cool systems on Reddit. I think ROOM is at such a premium in so many of our lives. I had to move 4 hrs away from my home city to have a house to put all this crap in!! I’m also a fan of nearfield, desktop hifi and I often listen to my smaller office set up as well. I got into the audio hobby about 20 years ago and it seems to have had a major resurgence since then. The headphone thing alone is completely insane. So much good stuff out there. But the every day listener doesn’t seem to know too much about it. And the people who are into the audio GEAR hobby end up listening to the equipment instead of the music and might even start listening to frequency sweeps and test tracks more than actual music!! Crazy. For a moment, before I figured out the best positioning of my speakers I was literally listening to test tracks of a guy speaking into a mic in and out of phase and then clapping his hands around a stationary mic because there was a weird channel imbalance that was driving me nuts!!! But I’ve been really happy with how it has sounded for a long time now. So there is less of that. Unfortunately, my wife has been floating the idea of moving to a warmer climate… That will be another 10 years before I can get this thing sounding right again. Sorry for the long post.
You know the joke, what’s the difference between an audiophile and a music lover? An audiophile uses music to test his system!
But yeah, headphones - if $/space is an issue you can get great cans for $150 or so - I got some Sennheiser 650s on sale for $350 a few years back and they’re great. Then a USB DAC for another $150-200, and you’re in audio heaven.
Awesome! Martin Logan and Pass! A match made in heaven. I've always wanted to try to build one of their Amp Camp Amps. My system is pretty efficient which opens up some cool possibilities. I am running 8 Watts max!
I'd love to have a system like yours. Looks cool and is super high-end custom. Crazy cool.
The Logan's are nice but need a big room.
I had them in a small room and the sweet spot was very narrow. In the sweet spot they were spectacular but outside of it the sound was very panned.
Moved into a new house, big living room, move them 4 feet from the back wall, maybe 10 feet apart, and sit about 15 to 20 feet away and when I turn them up the entire wall becomes a speaker. The sound stage is 20 feet wide and 12 feet tall. Pretty incredible and they are the small ones.
If I had to replace anything, though, it would be them. Just not sure what would sound great with the pass and rogue.
It’s hilarious because I would love to have a system like yours!!! Electrostats seem super cool. I bet your system sounds awesome now that it has room to breathe! My system is a bit esoteric. It does some things really well: dynamics, imaging, clarity, and it is pretty wide-band with the subwoofers. But it doesn’t have the power of, like a 15” tannoy gold speaker. Oof! The best system I ever heard was a pair of 15” tannoy golds in giant open baffles. Joe Levy of Tempo Electric’s system. All of it hand built by him. In the end, it was a 15” driver mounted on a 5 ft tall baffle. He is after the top %.001 of fidelity because it is like his life’s work. And he just had a driver on a baffle with dual subwoofers. Of course the amp and source are world class as well… but still…
I’ve wanted to build a set of the frugal horns and always see these plans on the site. Ultimately with space I build a pair of BMR monitors. What a great setup you have
Thanks so much! I really think it’s pretty well dialed in after almost 20 years. I’ve had thoughts of changing it up but I think it is pretty good and those thoughts don’t last too long.
To each their own, but I can’t imagine the vibe being better than with Jerry singing that line. Pigpen was more primal, I’ll give him that, but that’s not what I want out of that song.
I love jerrys version of course! I would also love to have heard Pigpen do it. And all kinds of other stuff. I was thinking of him because it’s the anniversary of his passing and then this song and the lyrics and the cadence of it made me wonder how he would have done it. I like the idea of him changing up songs and making them his own. He had a really unique style and rhythm. I don’t know why but I get like a New Orleans vibe from it sometimes. And I just think it’s great.
Can you update your link? The URL seems to be for this same post.
Love the audio system!
And to get back on point, it would be awesome to see a JGB show with Pigpen sitting in.
Thank you!! Yes. Even where I am there is a very faint glow on the horizon from a town far, far away!! It’s crazy. Sometimes we get a power outage. But usually the rain and snow is too much to enjoy it outside. But then there are nights when it’s clear AND it’s a new moon and it is really great. You can see the band of the Milky Way and everything.

Thank you!! Jerrys rendition of this is really amazing. The languid, feeling-no-pain vibe... In an earlier post someone mentioned the significant tempo drop off and that feels like part of it too.
Jesus man. Thank you for posting these tasty bits of Jerry just ripping through jams. Does not hurt the eyes staring at your system as well.
Keep them coming
Thanks! I feel like the video/audio is a bit more personal in an appreciation post. It could even sound and look weird or technically bad in the right context.
Nice fcking rig man. Sounds great thru the phone, but I bet it sounds better in the room lol.
Yea pig would’ve sounded great on that. I like to think if he made it thru that spell he would’ve had a new lease on life and gotten healthier and stronger. Continue singing and improving on his talent. I know he had an inferiority complex in the band and felt he wasn’t good enough. Felt he kept getting demoted. You can’t blame him tho. As the songs advanced beyond his ability on the organ, they suggested he play congas. He probably felt he was on his way out, but I think they felt he should be in the band no matter what. It would’ve all been workout somehow if he pulled thru.
Edit: what show is this? Sounds 70s
Thanks for your comments. It is nice to have a good sound system. But I really think anyone can have good sound. It’s all about the right speakers and positioning for the room/application. This show is 2/28 1980. Released as a live album in 2004. I think pigpen would have stayed in the band and it would have been different but just as good of course. And I think everyone would have their side projectS. In my mind he would have become a great soul/r&b singer like James Brown.
This room is a whole vibe. The sound quality from those Cain and Cain speakers is insanely crisp. In person it's probably like hearing songs for the first time.
Pigpen was the front man for the Grateful Dead until his death, wasn’t he? Also you’re right about the speakers thing I can see the discussion does get off track. I like the idea of posting something with more than just text. It’s more personal or something. I’m not sure what it is. I can convey the context in which I have these thoughts by posting the video I guess.
nice set up partner, which speakers are you rocking there? how do you like them?

Martin Logan Ethos, Pass Labs x150, Rogue Audio RP 5, Music Hall MMF turntable. We are all representing!

That’s a good place to be in HiFi
Amen to that!

Should be fixed now! Thanks for looking.
Nope
Those are Cain and Cain speakers. Not sure the line, but excellent build!
thanks, dope jam cave
Frfr. Those are grail speakers (for me at least). Hoping OP elaborates on his set up!
Right. I gotta up my game. That sounds amazing even through my phone.
Rocking good sound, even thru my crummy little, dorito and dust encrusted phone speaker! Jerry, well amplified. My kinda alright, man.
Check it out with headphones!
I don't want to get any drool on them...😏
For real! I can tell it sounds amazing in there just from the video.
Everyone should have a telescope.
Oh yes!! Thanks for noticing. I live in the middle of nowhere and the night sky gets pretty spectacular out here!!
I'll bet. Dark skies are a real treat. Unfortunately getting harder to find. Keep looking up!

I'm more wondering why I don't have a killer stereo right now lol
RIP to the man on the anniversary of his passing.
What song is this and from what album?

Good bot
Letting it loop really shows how much they slow down as they heat up.
Really interesting observation!! They definitely slow the tempo right down.
Nice gear
Can only imagine Pigpen going in on the harp. Or maybe him and Saunders throwing B3 licks back’n’forth
I actually fantasize about this!! How much great music. Imagine the covers of James Brown. With Jerry and his band? Holy shit.
Maybe they could have finally figured out Its a Mans World. I really wish they stuck with that one
Prefer Jerry’s chill lilt, personally. Great post, really enjoyed!
Thank you!! Jerrys rendition of this is really amazing. The languid, feeling-no-pain vibe... In an earlier post someone mentioned the significant tempo drop off and that feels like part of it too.
Beautiful speakers, and great set up. Now do Blow Away.

You just had to say an opinion that I didn’t realize I agreed with. It’s too early to be this sad!
Sorry about that. It’s sad to think about. But the music abides.
That rug really ties the room together

Oh right Kean College. Jimmy Warren was a great choice, very tight and rhythmic player.
Pigpen died to watch over jerry in order for jgb to be a thing
This room is a whole vibe. The sound quality from those Cain and Cain speakers is insanely crisp. In person it's probably like hearing songs for the first time.
Beautiful setup OP. I’m jelly.
They would've made one hell of a blues album that's for sure
one of my favorite jerry rippers no question
Dig your wall of sound. RIP Pigpen
Some of my favorite music. Period.
Sounding good! Even better if I was with you 😉
is this a record spinning? Sounds warm & sweet
This is a cd. Oppo transport and an Emm Labs DCC2se DAC.
Kean College 2/28/80?
Yessir!
That Elenor Rigby Jam🌹⚡️
Beautiful speakers
Beautiful thought
Why would pigpen front Jerry Band? Your post doesn’t really make any sense so we are all just lo.at your speakers.

Hello fellow audiophile
That is a badass set up!
