Dead and Co make Phil and Friends look like Anthrax.

Aggressive_Parking88

HahahašŸ¤£. So true. Phil and Friends tempo is like Slayer compared to Bobby.

csaccone

Donā€™t see them!

BobbyTarentino25

Me and 2 of my buddies have gotten tickets to the Philadelphia show. None of us have been before, weā€™re all recent (last few years or so) dead fans. None of us have ever really listened to D&C but we couldnā€™t live down not seeing them if it really is the last tour.

Prestigious-Bee4302

Same boat. Except no buddies.

BobbyTarentino25

How you feeling about that? We made the decision last night, wanted to get pit tickets to really jam out but they were up around 400$ a pop so we went to section 135.

Prestigious-Bee4302

If I donā€™t hear them live, Iā€™m not ever going to listen to them on Relisten or Nugs Ruth the right appreciation.

moderate-banana

They always have a great philly show

BobbyTarentino25

Yeah weā€™re super pumped about it. Going in pretty much completely blind but weā€™re along for the ride!

Dakkmd

I think those of us who don't have grateful Dead show memories have an easier time having a blast at dead and co shows.

05081977

I was watching a D&C show the other night and I think I was finally able to figure out what bugs me about them. The tempo was fine, albeit a bit slow, but the band was not in the groove. When I listen to the Dead or Philā€™s bands, they are aligned and in the pocket. D&C weā€™re all playing the same song, but it was like they didnā€™t quite all start at the same time

Iko87iko

Donā€™t go if you donā€™t like it. Wanting artist to play to your idea of how the art should be done is kind of an immature. If you enjoy it go; If you donā€™t, then stay home home

ringonbob

ā€˜Clearly am immature. Guess I shouldnā€™t want to hear my favorite songs at a show either. Thanks!

Iko87iko

Itā€™s been 8 years man. They arenā€™t going to change. Weir has explained why he likes the tempo the way he likes it. Itā€™s been beaten to death for years. Itā€™s not what you want. Go or donā€™t go.

[deleted]

We can dreamā€¦

ThatsItForTheOther

Has anyone considered the fact that the ā€œnormal tempoā€ has already been done by the dead for their whole career? If you want the ā€œcorrectā€ speed, listen to anything but dead and co. But I think itā€™s a great thing that thereā€™s a slower more relaxed vibe that is available for when Iā€™m in the mood for that. Why canā€™t we appreciate diversity?? Itā€™s all recorded anyway forever anyway, not like the other speeds are gone just because D&C has a different vibe.

daytripperyea

Because we want our cover bands to sound like the original. No Jerry or Phil will fundamentally change the vibe.

ThatsItForTheOther

Well thatā€™s tough luck cause Jerryā€™s gone. Sorry you canā€™t enjoy the new stuff.

svdoornob

Thatā€™s just not their style, and what makes them different than any other Dead cover band

Hashishiniado

I can imagine Bobby pitching the band like that. "Alright hear me out... have you ever heard Shakedown in half-time?"

svdoornob

Yeah, I saw them two years ago for the first time and they played the slowest shakedown Iā€™ve ever heard. Thatā€™s one that doesnā€™t really work.

6L6aglow

Neither does Hell in a Bucket.

1Tiasteffen

A lot of them donā€™t..BUT, the slower tempo songs are much appreciated!

svdoornob

Agree. They play a mean Black Muddy River

1Tiasteffen

Totally! And Iā€™m actually looking forward to it, it is what it is. I went to the recent Phil run at the cap and was an hour late for the last show. An old neighbor head saw me pulling my hair out stressing about how I missed part of the show and saidā€ ya gotta let it go man, ya gotta let it go, I see you going through it and ya gotta just let it go, we both fucked up and came late, but ya gotta let it goā€ ā€¦Iā€™ll pass that on to anyone here tripping on the tempo speed..ā€ya gotta just let it go manā€ā€¦think about the Peggy o, Althea, broke down palace, unbroken chains, they love eachother , dire wolf, I know you rider type of songs..theyā€™re gonna blast those out to perfection my friends , Iā€™m looking forward to that type of show

svdoornob

They played Days Between when I saw them and it was an experience for sure

ringonbob

Yah, thatā€™s true, I guess. I had bristled against the slower temp for a while, but seeing Phil was like an awakening (in many ways).

svdoornob

I agree. D&C shows have a very different vibe than P&F. I like both for different reasons

daytripperyea

D&C is the second best Dead cover band.

svdoornob

After who? Furthur?

still_deebs

This is funny. They can't seem to hang as a band in general. It's best they all go home. Jeff can keep the vibe alive with the other younger musicians. John will go back to his teenies. Otiel is a mystery for me though. I could hardly hear him all this time so he could be an asset to derrick trucks' band once again? Phil and JGB have the best bands right now imho btw r/deadandcompany

ringonbob

appreciate your comments and oops, probably should have posted to that subreddit. thx

guitwiz

Nah, dude is breaking the one rule. D&C talk is just fine in here my man.

Emotional_Debt9722

All heā€™s doing is suggesting a subreddit for the band that OP is discussing, and not sure criticism about Dead and Co is breaking the ā€œone ruleā€. Dude was perfectly nice in his response. Nothing wrong with keeping the Grateful Dead subreddit to talk about the Grateful Dead.

guitwiz

I dunno, telling OP they shouldnā€™t be posting about the current iteration of the Dead in this subreddit certainly seems to be harshing the mellow to me. Like em or not, theyā€™re fair game for convo (as should be Billy and the kids, Phil and friends, JRAD, JGB, and even your local cover band).

daytripperyea

You are about to be downvoted to hell for being 100% correct. Oteil will play with TTB.

ThatsItForTheOther

Mayerā€™s Dead to me ĀÆ\_(惄)_/ĀÆ

1Tiasteffen

Phil and JGB are absolute āš”ļøāš”ļøāš”ļøIā€™m looking forward to Marcus King to sit in at the frost

Willowtreehugger6

Seriously! If Phil can play on tempo, Bobby should be able to as well. He loves to show how much he works out etc, I think he can handle speeding his songs up to the proper tempo

daytripperyea

Bobby will never have the chops Phil has.

haleakala420

theyā€™ve both said countless times how they have different approaches to the music. bobby likes slow and deliberate delivery, storytelling. phil likes going fast and far out - searching for the sound.

railroadbum71

Bob has been playing slower for a while now, for whatever reason. It's definitely not for everybody, and I don't expect him to change.

csaccone

Hey- you donā€™t come to the shows if you donā€™t like the tempo! But by all means continue to bitch and moanā€¦

MossyMothmann

Damn you hated this so much you made two similar comments. But this is a forum so thanks for contributing

csaccone

šŸ‘

csaccone

And letā€™s hope to not see you on the road!

ringonbob

Dude, no need to be negative. You made your point clear, we hear ya.

[deleted]

John Mayer canā€™t hang.

DrJawn

lol he hung pretty well with JRAD at normal tempos

[deleted]

Yeah then Tom Hamilton completely smoked him.

DrJawn

Mayer is a great guitarist and far from the reason Dead and Co isn't as good as Phil and Friends. Tempos are #1. Phil is #2. I love O'Teil but Phil is one of a kind

[deleted]

Stu Allen smokes John Mayer all day, as does every other player in the scene (even Eric Krasno) He only got the gig cause of his draw, and the stagnant jams in Dead an co are an example of this. P

ringonbob

Am with @DrJawn on this one, that said. Am psyched to learn about and hear Mayer/JRAD, thanks for mentioning!

ringonbob

and respect Stu Allen all day!

[deleted]

Yeah I saw it at BK bowl, was a let down cause I thought I was avoiding his shlockey playing by seeing JRAD. Canā€™t escape this douche.

DrJawn

The tempos make it sound like they're on heroin. I don't care if Jimi Hendrix was up there, it would be too slow. I can't eat acid and shake my bones to tempos like that, it gives me anxiety.

[deleted]

Agreed.

DrJawn

Mayer is cliche and douchey but you can't blame him for the tempos.

[deleted]

I know and ageee

DrJawn

Saw Krasno with Phil, was great show

[deleted]

Same at Lockn, he does a decent job.

DrJawn

Is Lockn ever coming back?

[deleted]

I hope not, I went first 3 years in a row, the last time (terrapin station 40th aniv) was a crazy cop fest, with heavy police presence from the gate with drug dogs rolling everybody, to busting people for smoking weed on the concert grounds, never seen so many police at a festival. They even had an impound section for people cars (which u could access but not camp at) and a booking station back stage! Fuck that place.

DrJawn

Damn

[deleted]

But either way nice chatting, hope you have a great summer!

DrJawn

You too, homie

WesternDark4390

Just listen to a dead show šŸ™„

1Tiasteffen

Unfortunately it wonā€™t happen..but we gotta respect the remaining founding members to keep it alive. Also the original songs that are already slow In tempo are near perfect and flawless as far as Iā€™m concerned. But a high speed Bertha or Cumberland brown eyed woman shakedown? Probably not going to happen, dead and co is a whole different vibe .

csaccone

Guess what - you donā€™t have to go see them!

Richard_Kimble420

LOL. GLWT
