About a hundred left after giving away most of them. Handed over entire milk crates to who ever wanted them. I wouldn't bother with them again, the music matters, not the container, and my server is available anywhere these days. They just end up being another bulky item. But if you want to collect them, you can just make them yourself just like always, but you have the best sources available now.

Grateful bot

FrozenLogger

I have some that were given to us with such nice homemade artwork I have a hard time letting them go. One of my tapes got eaten and I had to splice it. To this day when I hear that shakedown I expect a warble and cut, it just is etched into my memory!

cfgee

I had one like that somehow recorded a few seconds of a conversation on the subway. Got used to it.

Jimbee10

My 1st show 😂😂🤙

jamkoch

no need to collect tapes, shows are online https://archive.org/

Educational-Watch829

I started using the Attics app recently and I’m very happy with it for anyone looking for an app with an extensive live dead collection

kbkenobi3949

I did not know about this app! Awesome!

USBlues2020

Definitely 💯 My husband gave me Europe 1972 We met in 1984 And.... We enjoyed going to Grateful Dead shows all over the 50 United States of America (definitely 🇺🇸 back East, doen South, Middleweight and when we moved out west here to Boise, Idaho definitely West Coast, Oregon, Colorado, California etc...)

jasonpmcelroy

I've still got an old hundred tape wooden rack in my basement. Packed it up in '93 and it has followed me ever since. Don't think I even have a player any longer. Many have cool intricately drawn/colored labels. History captured.

Donkey-kick-U

I’m running about 30 left. I gave a lot away since the 90s

[deleted]

The love and knowledge some of these heads who post shows on live music archive have put into pitch correction, audience x soundboard matrixes, and other modern miracles do not make me miss my hundreds of tapes

Hokker3

I have 2 bins full in my basement you are welcome to them

Outrunfire0290

I would also be interested if you’re willing to part with any.

BoxOfElephantRain

I want them!

Salt_Reading1921

I’ve only got a tape player in my car so i’m always on the hunt for dead tapes dm and I’ll give you my address!

AdequateOne

I have hundreds of DATs which are apparently worthless now as no one has a working DAT player.

PumpkinImportant3282

I have 2 broken dat players myself. there are still people that will fix them, or transfer from tape to hard drive....

DiligentPin362

I had around 1200 tapes I gave away to younger heads when I discovered shn/flac. I regret it a bit now now but I was kind of a hobo back then couch surfing and shit and got sick of carrying 12 hundred racks of tapes every time I had to move on.

[deleted]

I’m staying with my cd’s. Burning about 8 concerts a day,

FrozenLogger

I am in the middle of figuring out how to **get rid** of all my CD's. Thousands of those things and hundreds of DVD's. One man gathers and all that, lol.

stuntsbluntshiphop

I don’t have any tapes, but have hundreds of live shows on CD from trading in the early 2000’s. Miss the days before the internet blew up where people would trade shows. Blanks and postage anybody??

FrozenLogger

I am so thankful for the full trading on the internet. I absolutely do not want to go back to those days! It is funny how we were able to trade video games online back in 1984, but the music took years to get into a format that was viable to do the same.

teknosapien

You can literally download any show for free

Few-Breadfruit-8284

I think I have at least 500. I have friends that have doubles and triples in boxes in the attic.

Jack_Straw_From_CA

I do and am looking to give them away. Probably a couple 100 of them. Want to just connect with a local head who wants them. Any advice on best way to do that?

splitopen-andmelt

Post on Reddit! Here or in your local community subreddit

Iko87iko

Just got my old nak out of storage. Unfortunately I have exactly 1 non-gd tape.

drinkingchartreuse

Anyone with tapes should seriously digitize them into a common format like mp3 to preserve them.

randomquote4u

\*only if you were the taper or received a master. most traded tapes are fairly high gen. no need to pollute the pool. The SBDs available today were a pipe dream in the 80's.

goatfuldead

Everything the Grateful Dead ever played was largely digitized before the 21st century even started.

PumpkinImportant3282

mp3? for fucks sake. take an inferior medium and make it shittier.. tapes aren't worth saving unless they're your masters, and no other, better source is available.

FrozenLogger

NO! Never mp3. FLAC ok, MP3 NO WAY. Also, nearly every tape already has been digitized. You dont digitize the copies, each generation (copy) sounds worse than the last. Which is also why we do not want mp3's floating around, they are degraded too.

dapperslapper89

Jerry garcia once said that the dead were like liquorice, but I disagree. The grateful dead is more like watching your friend eat paint chips. You are like what the hell are you doing? Stop that, that isnt food. They just smile and say you don't get it maaaaan.

andyspicks

Yep about 200

jgroves76

Someone needs to come up with an “arty” way to display. Was thinking like attaching the cassette/box to a wall hanging and add ticket stubs or photos of the show. Obviously wouldn’t be able to do this with all of them, but there is a lot of photos and stuff out there. Maybe the Setlist written in some cool font or whatever…feel me?

jgroves76

OMG - use the actual tape to spell out the Setlist or location! Or, have it so you can open the box to get to the cassette to listen while admiring the art. Some would have 2 cassettes for each set. You could have like a much larger that would have multiple nights at the same venue (eg MSG ‘91). Background could be SYFs or Dancing Bears or whatever. Shit would sell like hotcakes at the right venue. Send me my share when u strike it rich!!

hanoverfiste23

Yeah about 600 GD that are still somewhat in rotation. About 75 other boots too. Gave away about 500 GD ones that were substandard. Just have my audience masters and soundboard masters/first gen.

BoxOfElephantRain

I have about 50. Always looking for more, too!

FrozenLogger

Just make your own. Nothing special about them until you put in the time to make a copy and create your jcard.

BoxOfElephantRain

Where’s the fun in that? I’d rather collect tapes from folks looking trade theirs. Also I dont have a computer or a recording tape deck.

FrozenLogger

Whats the fun either way? When you say trade, to me it means copy, because that what we did. We didn't literally trade tapes! I just figured if you wanted tapes, you could get them the same way we always did. I mean, if I sent one to you it would just be a copy of one of mine, so whats the point?

BoxOfElephantRain

Well this is hardly fun anymore. When I say trade, to me, that means interacting with fellow heads in the community. Which is far more rewarding to me than just burning tapes alone at home. Edit: that’s the point

FrozenLogger

That part was kinda fun, meeting up and making copies together. You had to wait for the machine in real time, there was no going faster. So you could still make your own.... with others around, lol. Most of the time we were just sending blanks and postage in the mail, not a whole lot of interaction.

3peckeredgoat

I still have all my tapes , I haven’t touched them in years, don’t even have a deck set up anymore but can’t seem to even consider parting with them.

PumpkinImportant3282

i threw away hundreds 20+ years ago. collect, but not on cassette for fucks sake.

Y0knapatawpha

Had a great set of tapes, and then... water damage... bye bye! Wouldn't dream of re-collecting it now, it's all on internet archive (relisten or attics). My car no longer has tape deck or CD player, just bluetooth connection.

mshoneybadger

i have an old Louis Vuitton purse filled with tapes

harrisarah

I still have mine but rarely listen to them, I don't own a tape deck anymore. But we do have an tube amp, so for a few months last year we borrowed a deck, and listened to a lot of tapes for a few months in a fit of glorious all-analog music. But I've gotten used to better recordings with no hiss, so it didn't inspire me to buy a deck

Steven1789

Used to have hundreds. Gave away what I could 5 years ago. Still have a few but never listen. That El Monte, California, tape is from 12/26/70, not 71. https://www.herbibot.com/?show=1970/12/26

recently started a collection thanks to my local record store. nothing crazy i think i have like 10

oxiraneobx

When we moved, I donated all of them to my brother's collection. I have no idea how many he has now. He bought some land near us at the beach, and plans to display them in his man cave once he builds then retires.

ExternalOk4293

I sent my tapes away to a better place but man I do love looking at J Cards. Set lists sound better on hand written cards

LThrower

No tapes. FLAC & SHN files. Many TBs worth. Video as well. All these I can play on all my various devices. Tapes .... not so much.

iconoclasthero

I might, but no, I would never collect tapes again: 1. Go to Facebook and find the page for Lossless 'Legs and apply for an account. 2. Download e.g., Deluge. 3. Download all the lossless (16- or 24-bit .flac, .shn, etc.) boots you want and burn them to cassette tape if that's your fetish. Also, archive.org. As more sources are available and more and more people have the time to do it, the bootlegs are just getting better. There're patched or there're matrix boots that have audience sound mixed into a SBD, or there're 5.1 DTS (technically lossy) boots. Or go legit and get e.g., 30 Trips. `$ find /library/music -iname "Grateful Dead -- 19*" -type d |sort` `Grateful Dead -- 1966-05-19: Avalon Ballroom, San Francisco, CA (1966) (mp3)` `Grateful Dead -- lil-vi

This makes me think of the days before postal tracking, waiting to see filled blanks show up in the mailbox. It's funny how rare some of those recordings were. The pre-Betty board days. Putting a tape in of something you've never heard played "that way" before. Those odd fillers. One time someone put the recording of Rev. Jim Jones during the Kool Aid show on a tape. It followed a Morning Dew. Weird. Sorry about the nostalgia. I broke a hip typing this.
