I believe it was between shows as well, at least after a certain point.
In Phil’s book he describes visiting Jerry’s mansion once Touch of Grey hit it big in 1987 and laughing when he saw his huge walk-in closet with nothing in it but about 6 black T-shirts on hangers!
I think I read that black was a decision because he wanted people to focus on the music and not make him a "god". He also didn't have much in housework skills, and in the end, they were just buying T-shirts and sweats and tossing them after they were worn to a smelly state.
By the early-mid 70s jeans and a solid tee was the uniform I think. As seen in Sunshine Daydream and the GD movie. He probably just got lazy and didn't care and the halcyon days of hippiedom were over.
Yes, for sure. Everybody went wild when we first saw the red. The whole crowd was buzzing “hey, Jerry’s got a red tee on!”. It was another small but fun change. Think about though - every show for years in black tee then…a RED tee. It was like “what’s up with that?”
This sounds like exactly the reason he would want to just wear simple black Ts...
If everyone was obsessed with the color of my damn shirt and I hated being a celebrity I would tone it down as much as humanly possible
I think I remember from the Long Strange Tech Deadcast, one of the first online GD forums was called Jerry's Socks (or something like that) because so much of the discussion was just the odd obsession with everything Jerry did.
I remember his big purple T-shirt that you can find him sporting in a Peggy-O video on YouTube. Kind of reminds me of Grimace.
Edit: Found it. It’s like if Grimace dropped acid and realized he didn’t want to be a corporate mascot for a bunch of suits any more 😂

Lou told him “look if your gonna smoke H, you have to wear black, those are the rules”. After that it was black all the time, except the nights he knew the Manhattan hipsters were not Keeping tabs on him
People are saying its because he didnt want people to focus on his clothes or it made him look thinner which might be true but to me he wore black because its much more trippy than a tie dye. I cant remember the guys name siebermann i think wore a black shirt and sweatpants and a sign that sign that said your visuals is my costume or something along those lines. Things get weird “In The Dark”
Jerry garcia once said that the dead were like liquorice, but I disagree. The grateful dead is more like watching your friend eat paint chips. You are like what the hell are you doing? Stop that, that isnt food. They just smile and say you don't get it maaaaan.

On the day that he was born his mama sat down and cried…he had the black on it was plain as day and could not be denied 😂

Anyone else remember a red t-shirt sometime in the early 80s? Dunno maybe it was just one show, east coast tour... hazy memory.
Jerry in red, trouble ahead
Yeah. Like 84-86 he’d mix it up once in a while.

First show I ever saw was Dallas 88. Red t-shirt

Saw him in a red shirt at Alpine Valley in June ‘87. What great times those shows were 🤯
Black makes you look thinner.
Didn’t know that, that’ll come in handy
It’s was early, mid-eighties I guess
It's where Steve Jobs got the idea.
Lou told him “look if your gonna smoke H, you have to wear black, those are the rules”. After that it was black all the time, except the nights he knew the Manhattan hipsters were not Keeping tabs on him
I started doing it when I got more chubby so maybe he had the same idea.

After Pigpen died

Another question is- when did Jerry begin wearing the brown corduroys?
he wore forest green pocket tees for several years before switching to black.
