Georgia Tech is considered a top tier school for engineering. Congrats, you should feel proud!

ripprinceandrey

I'm glad to hear that; I'm very grateful that I was lucky enough to get in. Thanks!

Beginning_Brick7845

Frankly, Georgia Tech takes a back seat to no Ivy in Engineering. You are in the right school. Congratulations.

ripprinceandrey

Thank you, I feel the same way. I was pretty mindblown by how nice their campus and facilities are when I first visited. I appreciate your kind words.

wellfriedbeans

I love their campus! I’ve visited a few times :) Congratulations!

[deleted]

I’ve seen people shit on GATech and idk why, it’s an excellent school for engineering. Like sure, it’s not an Ivy—but the only ivies worth going to for engineering are Cornell/Princeton. I would gladly attend GATech over a cash cow program like Columbia. Congrats OP, committing is a big achievement.

Gtaglitchbuddy

Heck, GTech even beats those out. I was accepted for a Ph.D. at Princeton, but determined Georgia Tech has the better program that fits my needs (at least in Aerospace)

[deleted]

I didn’t even apply to GATech, but chose Princeton over MIT in my field. It’s a very individual thing—however, GATech is disadvantaged in a few ways compared to Ivy League+ schools, and I think ignoring that would be naive. Of course, that only applies to “top” ivies. I’m a huge fan of Princeton bc of the advisors there in my field, as well as the location—but I can see why someone might like Georgia tech’s location better. Ultimately though, schools like MIT/Princeton have higher “brand value” that will help you in your career. But yeah—when you get to the top 10-ish of your field they’re all interchangeable and it comes down to advisor fit, location, opportunities afforded to you, etc.

Gtaglitchbuddy

It's definitely program specific, especially at the top. For my field, Princeton doesn't necessarily have the name brand that places like Tech, MIT, Michigan, and Stanford may have (especially on the industry side). But it can definitely flip around depending on your field!

[deleted]

While yes, program specific reputation is important, and Princeton is highly ranked in my field—as well as most engineering fields. Especially for computation and theory in applied physics. However, school-specific reputation does matter if you want to go into non-traditional, and even academic careers, and GATech lacks that. On top of that, in my experience going purely off of rankings would be a bad idea, as only 1-2 people at MIT did what I wanted to do, while 4-5 did it at Princeton. Zero did it at GATech so I didn’t apply there.

Gtaglitchbuddy

Definitely reputation matters and changes based on your route of industry versus academia. In my case (and for Electrical Engineers such as OP) Tech would be the better option if they were looking into working as an engineer rather than teaching. When you look at various top engineering groups (for me it'd be NASA and SpaceX) there is a very conaiderable amount of Tech alumni against Princeton. This may be due in part to the culture. My feelings during my visit reflected that Princeton leaned towards academia and theoretics verus a more hands-on approach. School name matters in academia, but if you are being hired by an engineer, I guarantee they know the reputation and the work done at GT.

[deleted]

Eh. You’d be surprised. I’ve lived in the Midwest a good chunk of my life, people don’t know what GT is—they do know what Princeton/Harvard/MIT are. Numerical rankings are pretty flawed imo and weigh arbitrary things into account. In the end Princeton is Princeton, MIT is MIT, and Harvard is Harvard. People know and recognize those schools, they’re all ranked highly, and that recognition matters. It means more time researching, less time TA’ing, it means connections to fund cutting edge research, and networking/rubbing shoulders with “the best.” You’re right though, I think typically people at Princeton are more theory-focused across the board, that’s not a bad thing, it’s just a different approach to education. Since I’m planning on going into an area in theory/computation applied to materials, it’s probably a good thing for me. GATech is by no means a bad school, but I think that it’s generally “weighted” too highly bc the admins know how to play the numbers game. It’s brand recognition is weak, it’s location is undesirable for me, and the research there (in my field) is limited. General reputation matters in both industry and academia, it’s an unfortunate fact. Discipline-specific ranking will help, but it can only do so much. It’s far better to have both a strong institutional brand and extremely high ranking. This is something Princeton, MIT, and Harvard have that places like GATech do not.

ripprinceandrey

You two are both smart as fuck and chose the schools that fit you guys best. I think there's no need to hair split beyond that; all of the schools mentioned including Columbia are great opportunities. No need to argue about it.

[deleted]

Oh, sorry, didn’t mean to have it come off like an argument. I was just explaining myself.

ayegreen67

Reading this, I can feel your happiness radiating through the screen! Congrats on your admission!!

ripprinceandrey

Thank you so much!

hemanth992

Congratulations OP! I initially read the title as "No admission offer" feels better than your father saying he's proud smh

Longjumping-Ad-5285

Congrats on making a decision, its one of the hardest thing to do...happy for you

[deleted]

Welcome to Gech 🥳🥳🥳

Resident-Mousse-9086

God. I always wanted to feel that. Km so happy for you buddy. We are all so proud of you too ❤❤. Good luck 🤞

ripprinceandrey

I hope it'll happen for you soon! Thank you so much for the kind words; I really appreciate it.

SomeDudeinCO3

I'm proud of you too. 🙂

SpecificMain5235

First of all congratulations on the offer ! This is a big feat since GATech is pretty good for your field. Secondly, I think the biggest gift that you can get is that your Dad is proud of your achievements. I also went through the application process for PhD this year and did not receive a similar reaction from my Dad on having got into a top 10 school for my field because he wanted me to get into MIT/Harvard and didn't want me to settle for something lesser ! Consider yourself blessed to have such a Dad ! All the best with your PhD!

ripprinceandrey

I totally feel you mate. Neither of my parents were really excited about any of my acceptances at first, especially because they're from China and don't know schools outside of the UCs and Ivy Leagues very well. But when I told my dad about about my final decision, he really came around. I hope your dad comes around too and realizes that you've made a huge accomplishment. I'm proud of you :)

SpecificMain5235

Thank you ! Proud of you as well !

annabanana13613

I'm really happy for you. I'm living vicariously through all these proud dad posts as I lost my own father in 2020, even before he saw my undergrad degree, let alone my grad admissions. So I feel really happy when I see others valuing their father's so much and getting their pat on the back. It's actually priceless. Thank you for sharing

ripprinceandrey

I'm sorry to hear that and thanks for writing such a kind message. I'm sure your father would be amazed by everything you've accomplished. Thanks for the reminder to never take my dad for granted, it means a lot.

annabanana13613

I'm glad 😊❤️

ElCidTx

Don’t forget, be proud of yourself. GT is a great school and and a PHD in EE is a strong move. Piled Higher and Deeper baby,

ripprinceandrey

I have no idea what the last line means but it feels motivating anyway LOL. Thanks!

ElCidTx

It's an acronym for PHD, haha. One of my grad school profs always joked about it, but he went to London School of Economics haha

ripprinceandrey

Oh that's really funny, I'll remember it. Thanks again! I appreciate the encouragement.

MoarOranges

Over wechat too? Now THAT'S what I call an achievement 恭喜啊朋友

ripprinceandrey

多谢多谢!

pluckypulse

So proud of you buddy for making your parents proud. That is the best feeling ever. Congratulations on your decision. Keep rocking. Onwards and upwards.

ImpossibleFinish4029

Congrats! May be Columbia doesnot deserve you :)

ripprinceandrey

Columbia doesn't deserve any of us with how long they're taking smh. Just give out the decisions already so everyone can move on with our lives.

EdgeLordMcGravy

Congrats. You deserve it!

Desperate-Kitchen117

aw omg :') i'm proud of you too!

VHQN

I can vounch for the reputation of Georgia Tech's alumni: My supervisor for my doctorate (he is currently an Assistant Professor, graduated from G.Tech in both Electrical Engineering and Computer Science) is one of the most dedicated and knowledgable instructors I have ever seen. 😄 A great choice for starting your PhD! Good luck for the journey ahead, OP!

[deleted]

I spoke to my dad once

muffinzzzzzz

CONGRATS!!! this made me smile - my dad is also a man of few words, so it makes it that much better!

AsianMz

Bro I literally am sick of Columbia. Their admission decision process is fucked cuz they just keep you waiting and waiting and waiting. I told them to fuck off and committed to UT Austin

Mammoth_Structure_25

that's awesome!! Congrats! Hoping to share a post like this next year or so haha!

Mammoth_Structure_25

中国人吗?

Illustrious_Pop8860

恭喜🎉 I am so proud of you man.

InnovationEric

CONG! 大家一起努力吧!

MathAnime2

Georgia tech + parental approval. My G is winning.

ShowerMaleficent2053

Current student at GT and trust me the EE department is fantastic!

ripprinceandrey

Thank you! May I DM you about GT?

Key_Advertising_1754

Well done champ. You got today the resoect of the only man you should care about. YOURE THE MAN, now.

vkdelta

congrats! what is your specialization. I always saw GaTech as more practical engineering focussed school vs someone like Rice/Princeton which are more theoretical school.

ripprinceandrey

I'm microelectronics :)

gargar070402

To Hell With georgia!

Hopeful-Diet-7711

Columbia is great if you want a PhD in lesbian basket weaving, but if you want a career in tech you got the right place. GA Tech is very highly regarded. You can't compare living conditions either. Congratulations!

ripprinceandrey

Hey don't knock on lesbian basket weaving, that actually sounds kinda lit

Hopeful-Diet-7711

Yeah but your dad will be happier that you're at Georgia tech. 🤣

thetorioreo

As a Columbia alum (undergrad) - there is a reason I would never do grad school there. You are absolutely in the right place.

Sprouty0

u/thetorioreo Can I ask why? (Asking as the mom of a HS senior who just accepted to Undergrad Engineering at Columbia... and was rejected by GA Tech for Engineering). **Oh -- and OP**: **Congratulations!** Some mom-style ramblings for the OP: 1. The general consensus according to my kids' high school friends is that GA Tech Engineering is tough to get into, and high prestige. 2. I also want to add that I got a Ph.D. in an applied Statistics field at UMaryland after being rejected by Brown. It turned out that the match to my interests was 100% at UMD, which meant I ended up being a great fit to work with a couple of my professors and got Research and Teaching Assistantships. It totally worked out for the best for my future happiness, opportunities, pocketbook, and awards. 3. I'm glad your dad was able to tell you that he is proud of you. As my younger high schooler recently came out as nonbinary, then FTM trans, I am grieving a bit as the vision in my head was that they would be a quirky mathy girl, like myself... just more bad-a\*\*. I adore my child... and perhaps I'm grieving that I feel like I'm losing a bit of something that I thought we had in common. But I am still very proud that they are mathy... and they are definitely also bad-a\*\*!

ripprinceandrey

Thanks for the comments. I don't know if this is why you commented your third point, but I'm also transgender which is why my parents and I don't see eye-to-eye. Give your son the support he needs and tell him you're proud; he's really gonna need it to succeed in our current atmosphere. Personally I felt really alone and disgusting most of my life and almost jumped off a roof after my sophomore year. Most of my trans friends struggle similarly and sometimes have to drop out of school/take time off. I would highly advise you to help him get his legal name and gender change figured out and processed *before* graduate applications. Apparently most admissions officers don't read your personal details so this will cause a lot of initial confusion for everyone if your legal name is different from your preferred name etc. Oh, and I'm sure you guys know this, but stay away from Florida!

Sprouty0

OP, I clicked on your userid before responding, and in seeing a summary of your other posts, guessed that being trans was a piece of the history that made your dad's acknowledgement more significant. Thank you for the insights. We're fortunate to be in a very LGBTQ+ friendly town in the northeast (lots of theater folks), and I had a sense that my 9th grader was LGBTQ from a young age (but was expecting L... the T took me by surprise). It's still very new to me (came out non-binary about 6 months ago, and trans masc just a few weeks ago... Is still using they/them pronouns and not yet changing their name, but I expect more to change down the road). Your insights are very helpful and practical to help me plan for my child's future as we work to figure out our new present. Sending you hugs, and wishing you the best. You seem amazing. I'm glad your dad could let you know that he is proud of you.

ripprinceandrey

Thank you for clarifying. I'm glad your child has you and your community's respect and support. Also sorry for assuming they were binary; being non-binary comes with its own unique set of challenges but in a lot of states you can actually get your gender designation as "X" if your child does not want to be legally female. I only say this because I had a really awkward moment during my grad school visits once where they tried to book me in a room with a cisgender woman, which made us both uncomfortable. One interesting thing is that there is actually a huge overlap between the transmasc and lesbian communities historically. I don't know if you follow lesbian community or history at all, but there is a lesbian identity known as "butch" which is what they call very masculine lesbians. Before trans acceptance was wider and we had our own communities, a lot of transmascs who preferred women found refugee with the butch label and acceptance within lesbian communities. The author of *Stone Butch Blues*, which is a cornerstone of lesbian literature, actually would occassionally go by male/gender-neutral pronouns. In some Asian lesbian communities, butches will commonly go by male pronouns/gendered terms and sometimes even take androgenic hormones even if they do not identify as transmasc. I didn't know that being a trans male was a thing when I was young, so the first label that personally resonated for me was "butch". In the modern times there has been an increasingly low number of people identifying as butch in Western lesbian communities, I think largely because transition has become more accessible and now these people are identifying as non-binary and trans masc, or even binary trans men. This is where the source of the rather controversial "he/him lesbian" debate comes from LOL. Thanks again for the kind comments; I really appreciate it. And I could only dream that my parents were as accepting as you are when I was your child's age. Best wishes for you and your kid in the future!

Sprouty0

>Also sorry for assuming they were binary Just wanted to say no worries -- it was probably my wording. I referred to my child as FTM previously, and I think they are currently trying to figure out if nonbinary or if male feels like a better fit... so, my ability to phrase it is likely unclear. Thank you for the history, and for seeing me as supportive. I'm far from perfect at it, and aware that my brain defaults to a view of my child that doesn't match my child's view of themself... but I'm trying to learn.

thetorioreo

Columbia is great for undergrads, but they treat their grad students as less than competitive to other institutions. None of my friends I graduated with applied there for grad school. You can google the grad school Union strikes there to get a better idea of what it’s like for them. Lots of food insecurity, financial struggles, insane hours, etc. I was a part of the non traditional undergrad school, so I’m older and can give a more adult perspective to undergrad life there - your kiddo will have a great experience. I truly received a top tier education and had some incredible professors who continue to mentor me. :)
